Default To the Newbies:Tough Love

Hi Guys, listen, I'm still working on my project of getting my health to where I want it to be, but I have to comment on so many of these posts in which you proclaim that you're 'scared', 'nervous', etc. You have to know that one indicator of success is your confidence in your ability to succeed. So please, don't defeat yourself by telling yourself anything but that you are ready and totally capable of getting what you want! Repeat three times: 'Yeah me! I've got this! I'm so happy! Yeah me!' Now go do something healthy...

You are pretty new yourself... Being scared and nervous are feelings that we have all experienced when it comes to weight loss, not just the new people. We look to each other to lift us up.

Of course! But we should not engage in negative self-talk - that's my point.

I'm not seeing the benefit in telling other people that it's not okay to talk about their fears.

You don't feel it, good for you.

But I think one of the benefits of 3FC is that we _can_ talk about that stuff here with people who've been there and who will understand.

To Acknowledge a fear does not equal negative self talk. IMHO.

You can acknowledge something is scary or unfamiliar without being defeated by it .

This is a place where people can come to talk about how this journey feels! Feelings aren't ever wrong. It's OK to be afraid. We are all here to overcome something. This should be a safe place to talk about that .

I totally get what the OP is saying... but unfortunately, staying positivie isn't that easy for all of us. This weight loss stuff is scary and frustrating... it's full of emotions. I personally need to learn to EXPRESS those feelings instead of EATING those feelings

Super cool that we can have someone like the OP to help remind us that positive thinking it huge for weight loss, but in the same tone, we all need to feel like we can express any feeling and thought that comes during this process so that we can be successfull in this crazy, exciting, terrifying journey called weight loss!

For me, expressing/confessing my fears to others (even if it's here online) is the first real step in working to overcome them. It's the ones I can't or won't express that remain problematic.

I have to agree with the OP. The more positive attitude someone has, the better they usually do. If someone keeps telling them self how hard it is, how nervous they are, how scary something is... it's hard to keep going.

Also, not everyone is scared/nervous about weight loss. To me, that seems like the silliest thing to be scared/nervous about. There is no time limit, your income and safety don't depend on it, but thats just me (my career choice is also police/swat work, so maybe that has changed my view on what things someone should be scared of).... However, I am also a true believer in tough love and have trouble sugar coating things which seems to get me in trouble sometimes on this forum....

I also don't think that the OP is saying that people are wrong for feeling scared/nervous, just that they need to think of the journey in a more positive light as it might be easier that way!

Weight loss doesn't usually make me scared; more like frustrated and annoyed at times.

I can understand the sentiment, but a lot of people are here because they don't have the confidence to give themselves that extra push to begin with. I think it's good to admit that you're scared or nervous, because that means you're really considering rearranging your life in a way to make your weight loss goals possible... I take it as a sign of promise, because in myself, fear means I'm taking a first step into something I don't know much about, other than (in this case) it means the start of being healthier.
