I'm thinking about making my meals for the month and just freezing them. I'll use stuff like chicken, veggies, beef etc.. so would they still be considerd better for you then buying a frozen family meal at the store?
Yes, yes and yes! When making dishes at home, we can control the amount of butter and the amount of sodium that goes into each dish. We can also customize them by adding more veggies or more meat then they do with the frozen store bought ones. Plus, you'll actually know what is actually going into it as opposed to some of the crazy chemicals they put into frozen dinners to help keep them "fresh"!.
If you check out your local library, they should have books on freezer meals (this is what I did). Lots of great recipes that hold up awesome in the freezer!
There's nothing unhealthy about freezing food. Frozen dinners can be as healthy as homemade (though the healthier ones tend to be quite expensive, and you have to read the ingredient list and the nutrition label carefully).
Freezing actually preserves many nutrients, so in many cases, frozen can be even healthier than fresh (when the fresh isn't so fresh). For example, frozen veggies (yes, even the store bought kind) can be healthier than produce that's been on the shelf (of the grocery store or your fridge) for a while, because frozen veggies are usually frozen within hours of being picked.
And your frozen dinners will be healthier than grocery store frozen dinners IF you use healthier ingredients.
I think it's a great idea! I do this for my family alot so that the days I can't face the temptation of cooking their food I can just tell them to grab a casserole out of the freezer. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have my own freezer stash too.
