Default How were you diagnosed with PCOS?

So I'm about 100 lbs overweight with high blood pressure, hypothyroidism (hashimotos), and now diabetes. I've struggled with depression my whole life as well as the ability to lose any weight and I've been diagnosed as bipolar. No problem gaining it of course. My doctor put me on Metformin for the diabetes. As I researched Metformin, I was introduced to PCOS. Everything about PCOS seems to fit what could be the root of all of my problems. It just seems like I've been fighting a losing battle with something my whole life and that might be what it is.

The problem is that when I brought it up to my PCP all she said was that PCOS is extremely difficult to diagnose so there is no way of knowing that I have it. So how were all of you diagnosed? Did you go to a specialist? Are there tests for it? I can't believe that PCOS exists and is known and yet there's no way to diagnose it in someone.

She's just increased my Metformin from 1000 to 2000 mg. I'm hoping that it's going to not only help my blood sugar but my weight as well. And given that it's also used in treating PCOS, I'm hoping that if I do have PCOS that it will help with those symptoms as well. Not sure, but I keep wanting to find a reason for everything that I'm going through. <heavy sigh>

When I started seeing an OB/GYN for issues I was having we looked over everything... my fasting blood sugar levels were fine, thyroid was fine, all other blood tests came back fine. At this point she said "well, it could be PCOS". I went and had an internal ultrasound done to rule out anything internal going on. They didn't see cycsts but also said it's possible to have the syndrome with no cysts. So, I ran with it. Everything fit, I went on Yazmin which is known to help with PCOS symptoms and it helped with the depression, anxiety, hair growth, and I actually lost a little weight.

Now, it's years later. I've had a miscarriage and since seeing a new doctor, I started Metformin and I'm back on birth control for a while. So, all this to say... change doctors! There are doctors out there who will listen and who know that PCOS exists and can be diagnosed when everything else is ruled out. It sounds like you've got some things taken care of through this other doctor but I think you could find someone who could give you more information and support.

Scroll down to the labs for the dx.

I took the PCOSA quiz of the time to my GP, who agreed I looked likely who then sent me to an endoc to get blood labs. It is an endocrine disorder that affects all systems -- not just a reproductive thing.

We come in at least 5 types. Here is our informal poll.

My sister and I had both been "tested" with an ultrasound two years ago for PCOS because everyone kept telling us that we likely had it. Our *doctor* didn't seem to think so.
However (after we've both moved away), my sister was diagnosed with it by her OBGYN. Suprise, surprise.
I haven't been officially diagnosed, but my new doctor that I'm seeing for my weight and insulin resistance and thyroid issues (who knew??) asked me all sorts of questions and said that I most definitely have PCOS too. But everything he's putting me on and losing weight treats it all the same anyway, so no reason to try to dig another ultrasound on me or in me to find out for sure.

Edit/PS: my sister and I are twins!

I was diagnosed 10 years ago. I was trying to get PG and with no luck. and AF was few and far between. So my OB/GYN ran blood work, and my levels were off the chart. So he sent me to the Mayo clinic and they did not test and a u/s they put me on Metphormin but it made me very sick. dropped that, for about 6 years then in November my ob/gyn put me on glyburide after I had AF for 3 1/2 months

I was diagnosed after I did some online research for my mom who had plenty of the symptoms, weight, diabetes, hair growth, such things... We went to the ob gyn and he said he would just test us both, since I also was overweight and had a starting metabolic syndrome... So he took our blood and had it tested for the testoterone and the cholesterol values and it came back positive for me. Not my mom, however she had alot more of the symptoms than me, so I was kind of shocked to hear that I had it. Thats when I started loosing weight and after having lost almost 100 lbs my ob gyn said he could revoke the diagnose, my blood looks perfect by now and he says now that I have it under control I should have no problems becoming pregnant if I wish to

First doctor ran some hormone blood tests after I told her that I wasn't getting my period regularly. My testosterone showed up higher and she told me that was indicative of PCOS. She put me on BCP and that was that.

Later, because I had moved, I had to go through the process with other doctors. Some just took it on faith that I had PCOS (no additional testing) and my current gyno wanted to see proof, so I've had lab tests and ultrasounds done to verify that I had cysts.

Your doctor may have said that she did because there isn't a genetic marker or a disease marker in the blood that is identified with PCOS. That's why it's called a syndrome, rather than a disease. It's a series of symptoms, all of them related to an endocrine disorder. But because it can vary, the symptoms are different, and there are types of PCOS. In my case, my pancreas (which is an organ that is also involved in the creation/maintenance of hormones) is failing and that makes sense because there is diabetes in my family.

Get yourself a different doctor or speak to the current one about the symptoms and the questionnaire that Astrophe shared.

My gynecologist when I was 17 did blood test and an ultrasound since I was getting my period once every 9 months about.

High testosterone levels and other hormones were disbalanced. Ultrasound was normal though. I was put on BCP and told I would have problem conceiving.

Well my first DD was a first try deal... and we werent even trying. I had stopped the BCP since I was going to see my gyecologist 3 months down the road and we wanted to start trying. I started doubting the PCOS dx.

Second DD took 18 months and the help of Metformin to get pregnant. So ok, perhaps I did have PCOS.

Third DD was an "accident" while on Nuvaring. So I was a little perplexe.

But 3rd pregnancy confirmed it all with being borderline diabetic during it. The internist Dr that was following me decided to put me on Metformin after birth as a precaution. I have hair growing on my face (especially around the chin and over my lip) for the past 15 years.

All of that put together, I dont doubt it anymore.

I was recently diagnosed (last year) at 18. My mom had heard something about PCOS and we looked it up. I had a good 5-8 symptoms and then had an Ultrasound that showed small cysts on my ovaries.
I think I'm pre-diabetic, which is really scary, but I'm hoping to get inspired to lose some weight with this forum.

My period was irregular when I was 18 and two years before that.

I went to a gynecologist, he asked a few questions and at the end of our session, he diagnosed me with PCOS.

My husband and I started TTC in September 2010, and I hadn't had a period in over 200 days so I went to an OB/GYN. She did blood tests for my thyroid, prolaction, testosterone, etc. and a transvaginal ultrasound. My testosterone was elevated and my ovaries are very polycystic, so it was an easy diagnosis for me.

I had a history of irregular periods, sinus tachy, hypertension (which may or may not be related), hirsutism, etc. Testosterone was at the very high end of normal. So diagnosis was easy. I went on to develop a cyst confirmed by u/s. I take spironolactone. It has helped some. Love it.

Then I went to an endo. He decided I don't have PCOS at all and the cyst was just a normal follicle (how that much pain can be normal I don't know ). So we are ignoring his idea that I don't have it and continuing to treat. My GP diagnosed it. board certified in family med with an extensive interest in female health issues.

I was diagnosed at 21. Prior to that I had had several cysts pop that sent me to the hospital for transvaginal ultrasounds, but they all where fine and just left pockets of fluid....then one day I had a huge pain that had me laying on the floor in tears for 4 hours before I could get to the hospital. Turns out I had a huge cyst that ruptured and when it did, it pissed off the ole´appendix and popped a hole in my intestine. I had emergency surgery and they cleaned both my overies making them both pretty, white, shining and new, removed my appendix and 4 feet of intestine to repair the damage. I have some nice scars.

Thankfully nothing since then and that was 10 years ago. Just have had no luck TTC and been through everything medically available to no avail...
