Default i might have to have surgery...

so I've been having major pain in my hip for about a week now (after having minor pain off and on, for about a year). today I saw a specialist who is sending me to a more specialized surgeon... to decide if I can have surgery or not. the surgery would correct the problem, but because of my age, they're not sure the risk of damaging my hip is worth it. also, the non-invasive options are not helping.

so... I'm freaking out... and the old me is trying to say "just eat whatever you want, it's bad day, it's ok to let go" the new me is flipping out. I know I can't just jump of the band wagon... I've worked too hard. I am also worried about being laid up for a couple weeks, at my parents house, where I'll have ZERO control over what they feed me.

I'm more than 500 calories over for today. I can't work out.

oh yeah... and they might cut me open. perspective.

I'm sorry to hear you may need surgery. I actually just had same-day surgery yesterday and while I didn't have the restrictions of being laid up for weeks, I had the fear of surgery and had the emotions saying 'Oh treat yourself to whatever food you want,' and I am still saying that LOL! Any type of surgery is unnerving and I may have to have another surgery where I will have trouble walking for awhile, so laid up too. It sounds like a lot of your fears and emotions are normal. My advice is seek more than one medical opinion, at least that's what's I think, take good care of yourself, maybe try to see if the pro's outweigh the con's or vice versus. Would the long term effects of surgery make being have to rest for awhile worth it?

Take good care! Feel free to private message me if you like

My non-medical opinion would be to avoid surgery at all costs.

Remember that surgeons will always recommend surgery. It's what they do.

I agree about getting more than one opinion, and not just from a different surgeon.

Good luck!

A friend of mine had major back pain. She went to a surgeon, had a lot of xrays and tests.
They were going to do surgery.

She then went to a chiropractor with the xrays.
He straightened her out. No surgery was needed. She was greatly relieved.

I was wondering, too. What do thay think is wrong with your hip ? Why do they think surgery will cure it ? I have pain in my hip., too and have had all kinds of tets and exams. Result it is arthiritis. Painful, yes, but surgery not needed.

I'm sorry you're going through this.

Maybe focus on eating at maintenance level for a little while? That would allow you to keep off the pounds you lost so far, while not having to be as restricted with your calories allowing you to relax just a bit without having to stress about your weight and your hip together.

my hip has two bone spurs growing off the top of the joint... the surgery would remove the spurs and the pain they have been causing me. I have arthritis in the hip as well, but it's only minor so far and not what's causing the major pains I've been having.

seabiscuit - the long-term effects would most likely improve my quality of life, for the time being. I'm eventually going to require a total hip replacement, but they won't do that for at 15 years.

JayEll - Yeah... I'm definitely trying to being careful of falling into that trap with the surgeons.

Lovely - I'm working on figuring out my maintenance calories now... that's probably the best bet!

Good luck with what you decide to do. Have you had more than one medical opinion ?

Wishing you the best as you figure out what's going to happen. In the meantime, you can remind yourself, "making poor food choices won't fix my hip."

I hope you are able to find a second opinion! But whatever happens, don't give up on your goal!
