I find that basic household chores (cooking, cleaning, etc.) and a good diet is all it takes to lose/maintain weight. If your diet/calories are in check, you should be ok and losing swell.

When I injured my knee in college (bursitis and a muscle sprain) and also when I herniated a disk several years later, I used water exercise during recovery (about a week after the knee injury and about four weeks after the disk injury).

It was more for physical therapy and relaxation than calorie-burning, but the water felt great for relieving the pain and tightness in the muscles and joints. After the disk herniation, I couldn't really even tread water properly (I couldn't move one leg at all without excruciating pain, and the other leg I had to move carefully), but just the relief from gravity felt awesome. As I could do more, I was able to restrenghten the muscles.

Kaplods is right. A friend of mine fell off a horse a few years ago, and broke her back, after she'd been through her hospital stay and was out of the back brace, exercise like swimming helped her get back to full fitness, it helped because the water supports your weight so you won't put any pressure on your knee. But if you focus on your diet and try light exercise like house work etc you'll still lose weight.
