When I injured my knee in college (bursitis and a muscle sprain) and also when I herniated a disk several years later, I used water exercise during recovery (about a week after the knee injury and about four weeks after the disk injury).
It was more for physical therapy and relaxation than calorie-burning, but the water felt great for relieving the pain and tightness in the muscles and joints. After the disk herniation, I couldn't really even tread water properly (I couldn't move one leg at all without excruciating pain, and the other leg I had to move carefully), but just the relief from gravity felt awesome. As I could do more, I was able to restrenghten the muscles.
