I'm going out for sushi tomorrow night and I really don't want to overload on calories. Even though sushi seems healthy, I seem to go way over on calories. I get brown rice sushi and I don't get anything fried or with sauce on it.
JessLess --- brown rice sounds good too, but what about taking it out completely? Sashimi (sushi w/ no rice) is probably your best bet, and then maybe get a side salad or edamame perhaps?

Hope this helps!
Yeah, that sounds good, but enough Sashimi to fill me up = a lot of calories, unfortunately.
but I'd like to know how that dinner goes! My co-workers constantly invite me out for lunch to sushi bars but it's a scary thought trying to find something that will fill me up without making me feel totally guilty afterwards :-P
I'd stay clear of the rice...stick w sashimi or tamakizushi (no rice) or ask ahead of time if they offer lettus wraps or cucumer. There SO many ways to make sushi and im sure if you ask for no rice sushi they will accomidate...they do here in NH HAVE FUN!
astrophe -Thanks for the link, bookmarked for future reference JessLess - Sushi is one of my favorite treats. For me, I usually start with miso soup and a seaweed salad. The salad may not sound tasty, but it actually is quite good: a little sweet, a little spicy and a little salty=YUM! Then I have a simple roll, nothing fried and it's great meal for under 500 cals. Portion control has become my friend - back in the day I could easily put away soup and salad and 3 rolls often containing tempura or the entire roll was tempura-ed. Yikes!!!!
I'd recommend the chirashi. Because it is served on a bed of sushi rice, you can decide how much of the rice to eat.
If you don't plan on eating much of the rice, you could pick one of the lighter appetizers as well.
The house salad (as long as it's not a creamy dressing), the seaweed salad or the squid/calamari salad would be lower calorie/carb choices.
Or you could choose a couple of the salads to eat as your meal. I've made a meal of the seaweed salad and squid or octopus salad (as long as it's in a vinagrette dressing and not a mayo based one).
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I was stressed out about both the meal and the company and I opted out of going. I would not have enjoyed it and I'm just not ready to have sushi at a restaurant with stressful company today. Maybe I will someday, but not today. I feel like I did the right thing for myself.
Oh my gosh! Sushi isn't that bad! Rice is high-GI but it's pretty much the only thing that'll give you substantial calories out of it (that and the fish, if there's a lot of it. I tend to just 'write off' calories from such a super-healthy ingredient as fish).
When going for sushi the number 1 rule would be--no fried fillings! No tempura rolls, no spider rolls. Try a veggie futomaki roll, they're so delicious, like California rolls with additional veggies. Futomaki-style rolls are the big fat ones(think about the width of a cucumber), so they're really filling. I checked a few different sources and 6 pieces of VEGGIE futomaki is around ~300 calories.
My birthday was yesterday and I went straight for sushi as my birthday dinner
I think eating sushi is a much better option than eating at a fast food place. If it is bothering you to eat sushi, just consider that day your "cheat" day. You have to allow yourself to cheat and not deprive yourself from foods you do like. The key is to not eat a high amount of calories and fat on a daily basis. Once in a while will not hurt you.
