Well I hope he plans to seriously monitor you if you plan to eat between 600-800 because that is extremely low. You must have some obesity related health problems because rapid weightloss like that could slow your metabolism, result in kidney, heart and other organ problems, leave you with lots of extra skin, and end you up in hospital if you don't get all the nutrients you need. I seriously hope your doctor went over everything you need to watch out for and what sort of foods you should be eating.

I would double check with the doctor - I don't know of any who would recommend such a drastic diet. Are you sure he didn't say 1700 -1800 calories per day? You would still lose weight on such a plan if you stuck to it.

800 calories is REALLY low IMO. I think you should get a second opinion. I think slow and steady weight loss with toning excerise would be way more beneficial than trying to drop it quickly. Just make sure you do what is best for YOU.

Is this a liquid fast he wants you to go on? Is he going to use his own program that he will make money from? I don't think you should do anything below 1200 calories but at your weight, I would start off with about 1800-2000 or something like that. Yes, definitely workout but start out slow with just walking for longer than what you are already doing. Increase by 5 minutes every few days or even every week. Once you get into the grove of things, you could then start with some resistance training using free weights, resistance bands and your own body weight. If you can afford it, a personal trainer is a great way to help you set up a program but at the end of the day, the eating is the most important thing. Don't pressure yourself to lose all the weight within x amount of time. You'll just get frustrated and quit. That's what has happened to me many, many times. I really recommend you read a lot of the posts here by Kaplods. She has a very good way of explaining how to handle this journey mentally.

I agree with all the others. Get a second opinion. Those numbers are crazy and I don't know a single medical professional that would recommend such a drastic and restrictive diet unless they were prepping you for immediate surgery.

Yeah, that seems REALLY low. It seems unhealthy to me. Also, it seems like it'd be HARD. You'd think a medical professional would want to set you on a more sustainable long term path.

i agree with the others that that sounds really low, most physicians advise to never go lower then 1200. Are you sure it is cals and not some sort of dietary exchange program for counting?

I concur with what others said, and moreover would actually suggest you straight up get a 2nd opinion (if only from another GP but preferably from an obesity specialist).

As other said, not only does that much a reduced calorie diet come with many health risks and require much monitoring (blood tests, etc) it is very likely you would 'burn out' on such a restrictive plan pretty quick.

Many people on the forums have lost as much weight as you need to lose, with a focus on it being a sustainable life change rather than a temp plan to get quick results.

wow thats really low. I told my doc when my friend said she was doing the HCG diet thing at 500 cals and asked if that was healthy because it didnt sound like it to me. She said "any doctor that says you should be on a diet with less then 1000 calories when you are healthy other then being fat needs to get locked up" She meant to be funny about the locked up part but there is a level that your body needs to function and that sounds way to low. I would ask someone else I mean even on biggest loser they dont do diets that darn low!

Low calorie dieting is much debated around here and generally I'm one to advocate FOR low calories, but in this case... I think both the calorie numbers AND the weight numbers are too low! At 5'8", 165 pounds is considered "normal" according to BMI standards, and is a good goal to aim for. You may want to shoot for lower after that, but I'd say that's a darn good number to get to.

Having done the low calorie thing from the very start, I now wish I had eaten as much as I could while still losing weight. A good number to aim for is to lose 4-8 pounds per month and adjust the calories down as you need to.

Losing large amounts of weight is not only possible, it's been done multiple times here. This is a great place for learning how to do that and for getting support as you proceed.

Doctors can be idiots just like anyone else. Personally, I wouldn't see him anymore.

What do you call the person who graduated last in his class at medical school?

Doctor.

'Nuff said.
