Default 2 cups of veggies

I am wondering - when you are measuring your veggies do you measure them cut up or whole? (ie a celery stick - chop it up fine or into smaller pieces or?)

that's a tough question. i cut mine up because that's how i cook them. this website is very very helpful if you have a kitchen scale (if not, buy one! it is worth it!): http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

it gives you the cup weight of anything you can imagine. it's great for things that you can't, or don't want to, cut up.

Thanks, Laura! that's a great tip. I've been really bad about (probably) overestimating my portion size. [and it will be good to use my scale for more than just weighing out my morning coffee beans since I'm no longer using it for baking]

for sure you do NOT weigh 2 cups of veggies... you do not go by weight. some veggies are heavier than others. I do use my kitchen scale to weigh any meats/seafood I eat. I use a measuring cup to measure cut up veggies.

hi Losingforgood! that website is actually really accurate on how much a cup of (blank) would weigh. for instance, turnips are a heavy vegetable, so a cup of raw turnips weighs 130 grams. celery is not as heavy in weight, so a cup of chopped raw celery weighs 101 grams. this website is done by the Agricultural Research Service on USDA foods, so it is both accurate and reliable. you can not always cut up vegetables to measure them. what if you want to cook a portabella mushroom whole? well, this website says that a cup of portabella weighs 86 grams. now you know how much you are cooking! it's not just for meat.
