Imam 5'4 108 kilos (around 242pounds I think) and I look up tools for cal counting but I seem to be getting lots of different answers, so I thought i'd ask humans lol I study so I mostly sit down all day, not really active yet as i'm trying to get on top of the food first.
People do maintain healthy diets on 1200 calories, but many users are this website will probably share from their own experiences that at your weight you may want to start at a higher calorie level. Judging from others' experiences you'll still lose weight even if you're at 1600 and you won't feel as hungry throughout the day.
That said, this is what has worked for/been appropriate for OTHER people so it's always best to check with your doctor or nutritionist to develop a weight loss plan that is suitable for your own body and health. Good luck
I was eating 1200-1300 calories for the last month, but found my weight loss stalled out reeeally early, despite me working out as well. It was recommended that I up my calories to 1800. My scale didn't move for 10 days while I was at 1200-1300 calories (although I had a 6lb loss the first week), as soon as I upped my calories I dropped 1/2 a pound overnight (literally).
I'd definately start with a higher calorie amount, you can always go lower if you need to.
I know it is possible to get enough nutrition on 1200 calories a day if you really make an effort to use your calories wisely. The problem for me is that in order to stay on track for the long haul, I don't want to deprive myself quite that much.
On the other hand, when I eat 1800 calories each day, I do not lose weight. I have found that the ideal for me is around 1400 calories.
You know your metabolism better than anyone so maybe you could figure how much you are eating at your current weight and then deduct about 1000 calories from that. You should get a nice weight loss without feeling too deprived.
For the first 3 months of my weight loss I ate 1200 calories every single day. I lost a good deal of weight and never stalled. I ate only high quality nutrient dense food. Once summer hit and we were traveling a bit on weekends I did up my calories to 1500 calories a day on weekends to accommodate for eating out more often, but still I made only good choices and we never went to fast food type places.
To this day, almost 3 years later, I continue to eat 1200 calories a day during the week, though I thoroughly enjoy weekends eating whatever I want within reason. I never once had a plateau. It worked for me.
You will ALWAYS find a divide on this issue - some say no, it's not enough. Some say yes, it's enough. You'll find proper evidence on both sides, successes on both sides. In the end, you'll have to try something and see if it's right for you. I know that's a very vague answer - but there's no right or wrong
I am 5'5, 130, and losing on 1400 per day (1600 before). Lori Bell above me, has gone from 5'5 and 333 down to 140 & maintaining on 1200. So, clearly both strategies can work.
it's been a week on 1200 cals and i've gone over a few days, i think i just need to choose wehere i spend those calories more wisely in nutrient rich food! it's such a learning kerb for me. .but i think depending on this week and next weeks weight loss i might up to 1300-1400 next month.

I just wanted to clear up that I actually maintain on around 1900 calories a day average. My weekday calories are low, but my weekend calorie can get a little high. It all averages out as long as I'm faithful about getting back on the wagon come Monday.
