Talking Steel Magnolias #60

GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It is windy and cold here in the Heartland this day. Will said he will have my office/crafts room flooring all in this day. That will be wonderful to be able to get all my stuff back in there. The dining room table hosts my glass and my other things are in the front room. It will be nice to get it all back to exact. I can tell that baby Beanie is growing already. He is such a corker. He plays and plays then comes to be to pick him up and give him a hug then off he goes again. Not much doing here by me this day. Not being able to get to my "stuff" makes me miss my room all the more.

All y'all have a wonderful Christmas Eve and Christmas. Type at y'all later.

Good afternoon, ladies! Depending on how the wind blows, we may be in for a blizzard tomorrow. In '87 we had an ice storm on Christmas and was without heat (heat pump) because we had no electricity for 10 days. What a way to end one year and start another.

I went to WW this morning and was down just .2 but I had expected and was happy with it.

Maggie, I hope the floor is finished today and you can get things back the way you want them. Does Ragg Mopp play with Beanie now?

Faye, I guess you are off to the casino. Enjoy! I hope you can swim with T.

Jean, are you finished yet?

Have a great day!

Good Evening, Flowers! I'm waiting for Bob to come inside from shoveling snow for the second time today. He thought we had another 3" with no wind, so it isn't too bad. It's not terribly cold so that helps too. I've been fixing food most of the day.

We took time to go to church this afternoon rather than wait until tonight. There were several very vocal children there and I'm thinking they don't go to church on a regular basis. I don't know why parents don't take them out instead of letting them disrupt the service. GRRRR!

I am ready to do dishes, and run the dishwasher, but plugged up the garbage disposal with a rice glob so Bob will have to fix that when he comes in.

Maggie -- Thanks for starting the new thread today! I'm sure you will be glad to be back in your office and have your "stuff" back in order. We do some furniture rearranging when we have more than just family here. Ernie guards his toy box and scratching box like they are going to disappear. He doesn't like anyone moving his stuff!

Susan -- I sure hope you don't have a blizzard tomorrow! on losing anything this past week -- every little bit helps. I have the bathroom to touch up, some laundry to put away, and the tablecloth to iron then I am done!

"Gma" -- I hope you and Thomas are swimming laps in the pool!

If there are any cobwebs hanging around so be it! I'm sure I will see something in the daylight tomorrow that I missed today.

I wish you all a blessed Merry Christmas!

Jean -- from Iowa!

Good afternoon gals. We came home this morning to snow flurries, but so far none of it is sticking. We had a fun time last night. We met at the buffet at 1 pm and dad paid. I stuck mostly to salad stuff but I did have some egg drop soup that was really good and some low mein that was pretty good. For dessert (they have tons to choose from) I stuck to a small creme brulee with fresh fruit on top and a huge carmel apple that I sliced up and only ate one small section. We went to the hotel and checked in and we found out they had remodeld all the rooms and they were gorgeous and brand new. Yes, I did get to swim with T and the family. I got cold and got out and sat and talked with Kelly, Jack got into the whirlpool to help with his hip and knees (more about why later) and Thomas and Tom cavorted for a good hour more in the pool. We then came back to the room and changed and they headed home as Kelly was tired and still have Christmas (Santa) stuff to do and we were supposed to get icy conditions so they wanted to get back before all that came about, which it never did.

As for Jack and his hips and knees, on Thursday he got asked to come in on Friday to do the electronics on a motor that blew up on Wednesday afternoon and had to have a rush job repair. He went in at 5:30 but told them he had to leave by 10 period. At least they are paying him overtime. Anyway, this motor goes down deep into a pit and their are about 30-40 steps you have to go up and down, up and down so by the time he left he was in a lot of pain and stayed that way. The hot whirlpool did help, but with his heart condition he can't stay in very long.

We went to IHOP for lunch today around 1:30 PM since we had to check out of the hotel by 11 and didn't have breakfast until 9 so wasn't ready for lunch at 11. We are back home for the rest of the day and I imagine I will just knit and watch tv. Tomorrow we have to do laundry again and I have to do some grocery shopping.

Please say some prayers for Tom's dad. Kelly told us at Thanksgiving that her fil was being tested for prostate cancer. She told us last night it has matasticized in his bones, inoperable and he has only a couple years. I know it is hard on his wife, Tom, his sister and Kelly, but I think mostly of my little fellow. He spends everyday with his pops and nana and it is going to be so hard for him when it happens. It just tears me up thinking about it. Tom's parents are quite a bit older than us, his dad is 75m but still. I appreciate your prayers for him, they call him Bookie.

I will do individuals tomorrow, just wanted to wish you all another Merry Christmas today. Faye (PS: I have already gotten a text from Thomas's new phone lol)

Talking Christmas Day

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.

It is a chily 25 degree day here in the Heartland but no snow. Ragg Mopp is continuing to get better each day and letting Beanie get closer all the time. The little guy wants to get so close to Ragg Mopp and it is so cute. But Ragg Mopp isn't quite sure he wants to be that close. I think when he gets back to exact he will be more friendly. He had trauma. When Ragg Mopp wants a nap he can jump up on the bed and Beanie can't make it up there so he doesn't bother him there. Beanie has been content to sleep in his bed on the floor. I have never heard him whimper at all. That little guy has heart. Ragg Mopp barks at him and his tail waggs all the more.

We went out to eat at lunch time at I-Hop and I had chicken fried steak with the gravy on the side. I cut a couple strips of meat and dipped them in gravy and only 1/3 of the meat and brought the rest home. In fact Will said "Next time lets share." I have been wanting him to do that for a long time because I never finish when we go out. I can order a salad and have half the meat and veggies (all of it if it is broccoli) and he can have the potatoes, gravy and a salad and half of the meat. Anyway he can cut back that way for he does want to lose weight. On our way home we saw that our favorite Chinese place is open so we will go there tonight if it is still open then. Walgreens and a gas station are open and those two restaurants and I believe everything else is closed. We took a ride all over town after lunch.

DONNA FAYE Sounds like your day has gone well for you. I feels so sorry for Jack having to go back to work like that. Hopefully, he feels better by now. That is sad about Tom's dad. Yes, prayers are on order for him.

JEAN So you got the snow today! We are dry and cold here. No White Christmas for us in the Heartland.

SUSAN Hope all is well with you and you aren't snowed in. How did your nice meal turn out. I have a friend in Texas that always cooks the whole standing rib eye roast for Christmas dinner and it sure sounds like you got two nice steaks cut off of it. My favorite steaks are rib eye steaks. OH Yum.

MERRY CHRISTMAS To y'all from my house to yours.

Good Evening, Flowers! The house is sort of put back together, the dishwasher is running, and all the rest of the dishes have been washed, dried, and some put away for another year. It was cold but the sun was shining so the kids played outside a couple of different times. I haven't baked anything for several years so this year Beth brought two kinds of cookies and made a Pampered Chef cake/torte recipe where you layer graham crackers, use cream cheese and white chocolate pudding and pie filling in between, then frost with whipped cream (it was "ok" but not anything I would ever make), Amanda enjoyed her free time making goodies and brought lots to share, and my "sister" brought different kinds of candy and decorated cookies that she made. Talk about sugar overload!!!!!!

"Gma" -- I'm glad you are back home safe and sound after having a nice time. I hope Jack is able to get rid of the soreness in his hips and knees over the weekend. I will keep Tom's dad in my prayers. How did he get the name Bookie? I am surprised that the doctor would give him any kind of a time range.

Maggie -- We haven't eaten Chinese for a long time. That sounds good. We just had blowing snow today. Beth and Will hit icy blacktop so headed to the main highway going home. My "sister" and family came in from the east and said they drove in blowing snow which made their roads slippery too.

Susan -- I hope you aren't in the middle of the blizzard and lost power!

I am heading to bed! I hope you all enjoy you day tomorrow!

Jean -- in Iowa where it is 9 degrees and windchill of -2!

Good morning to you all! It is and here this morning so I guess I spoke too soon! We just got a light dusting though, nothing too big.

I forgot to tell you what my noodleheaded husband did at the casino. We were all checked in and such, Kelly, Tom and Thomas had headed home and Jack saw that he left his phone charger connected in the car so he was going to go down and have the valet go get it. I asked him to check out the deli and see if they had any made up sandwiches like tuna and such and if they did to call me and I would just have him bring one back up for my supper later. I gave him 3 one's and 2 twentie's. The ones were for the valet and the other money to buy the sandwiches with. You see where I am going with this don't you? He called me and said they didn't have sandwiches so I said just to come back upstairs, which he did. Later, I said I was going to dress and go down and get a hot dog or salad or something to eat and where was the money I gave him I would use it. He said it was on the desk, but all that was on the desk was the 3$. I asked him where the rest of the money was and he came over and saw the three ones and sort of blanched and said, uh oh, looked in his jacket and then looked at me. I said, "Oh Jack, you didn't give the valet, a $40 tip did you?" Yep, that's what he did!!!! I was mad, but not for long, I just teased him for awhile then said to forget it, it was an accident. Secretly I am thinking, what a dope not to pay better attention, but he felt bad so I just let it go.

Jean: Sounds like you and the family had a lovely time. We called Jay yesterday morning and they were at his mil's so I didn't get to talk to him much. Jackson hadn't done Santa as his cousin was at her dad's house until 4 pm and they were going to have Christmas when she got home. Thomas texted me Merry Christmas from the new Android phone he got for Christmas and gave me his phone number but other than that it was quiet here. I just took a nap.

Maggie: We went to IHOP around 1 pm. I had the steak tips and they were really good. I also had soup instead of salad and it was pretty good too. The restaurant was pretty busy but our waitress stayed on top of things I can say that for her. We ate late enough that Jack just made me a grilled cheese for dinner, which was fine.

Well gals, we are going to the commissary and then to Target this morning. Tomorrow is grooming day for Fortune and Jack is going to get a haircut. I am letting mine grow out for while then will go to another salon and get a good cut. The lady who was cutting my hair is now the manager and not available a lot of the time and the last three times they messed my hair up but good so I am going to start back to the more expensive salon I guess. My hair is very fine and over the last4 years I have lost hair and it has become thin so I have to have an almost perfect haircut. That's why I started dying my hair darker red because it hides the thinness of my hair. So anyway, that's the plan for the rest of the holiday weekend. That and laundry.

Have a good day today! faye

Good Morning, Flowers! We slept in this morning and woke up to lazy snowflakes falling, and the trees decorated with frost from the fog last night. I can tell looking at the lake there is some still hanging around. We skipped church this morning; I hate rushing around to get ready, and Bob ushers in January so decided last night to skip it if we slept later than usual. Poor excuse I know. I have laundry going, unloaded the dishwasher, had coffee, and read the paper. I thought I was caught up on laundry but there are piles waiting for me once again.

"Gma" -- I can sympathize with Jack's money snafu as I've done similar things more than once. My trick is to buy something which costs more than I intended to pay because I wasn't paying attention. I'll bet he doesn't do that again. Hope your commissary run is a quick one. Is tomorrow a holiday from work for Jack?

Maggie -- I'm wondering if you are getting lazy snowflakes too?

Susan -- We missed you yesterday! I hope you are ok.

Guess I will put my makeup on -- Bob is going after a kit to fix my leaky faucet and invited me to go along. Have a super Sunday and enjoy!

Jean -- from Iowa!

Good morning to you gals! It is very cool this morning but dry. Our snow didn't last, unlike the mess the east is having to deal with, and there are icy spots where the wet didn't dry overnight, but nothing bad.

We have to drop Fortune off at the groomers in about an hour, then Jack will leave me at the laundromat and then go and get his haircut and come back while the clothes are drying. One more month and I can quit that routine.

The commissary was a total bust. It wasn't busy, but the shelves were practically empty. They hadn't gotten stock because of the way the holiday fell so it was picked over big time. We got most of what we needed, then I went to Target for the rest, but even Target has big bald spots. We still have a few things I will have to go to Kroger for I guess.

I developed a very sore muscle cramp in my upper shoulder neck area and kept the heating pad on all night and it is still pretty stiff. I think I did it down at the casino hotel when I fell asleep in the chair in the room. It's a lot harder when you get old when you do that!

Jean: I talked to my sister for her birthday yesterday and she is fed up with the snow and cold weather all ready. They have gotten a lot of snow this year already and the temps way below normal. I asked her about her husband (you know he has MS) and he is doing very poorly. She said the family all went to the nursing home on Christmas Eve and he was totally out of it and didn't even recognize anybody. She said he was the same way Christmas day and then she said yesterday he was a bit better. Jack does have today off.

Gloria: If you peek in, let us know you and Jack are ok with the weather slamming into you so hard.

I have to get out of here and go and get a shower and get dressed and such. Have a good day all! Faye

Merry Christmas from a very snowy Northeast!
Donna thank you for the shout out. I have not done a lot of computer lurking but this AM we are just hunkering down with our 18" of snow so I decided to look around. We are all as well as you can get when you are 'old'. LOL
We had a lovely Christmas with DD#2 and then visited DD#1 in the evening. We had a wonderful Skype visit with our son in NC and then he called this morning and said they had 6" of the white stuff there. Had a lovely phone visit with DD#3 last night.
The snow plow man was here last night but it kept snowing throughout the night so he will be back again later today. He is a keeper as he also hand shovels the stairs and the front walk.
From what I read this morning it sounds like you all had a very good Christmas.
Stay well and have a Happy and Healthy New Year!
Gloria

Good Morning, Flowers! The sun is shining but it was -1 when I went downstairs this morning. It's "warming" up though as it's now 7 degrees. Bob's office is closed today since the home office is closed and the computers are shut down. We were just sitting here having coffee and visiting when I looked at the clock and realized I was running late to leave for church. I hurried up to get dressed and walked in at 8, only to find out the office is closed today! That's what I get for not going to church yesterday as it was printed in the bulletin. So I am back home and looking at "stuff" to put away. I really need to dig into some cupboards and closets again.

"Gma" -- I didn't think about the grocery shelves being pretty bare but it makes sense with Christmas on the weekend. I hope your shoulder feels better today after you move around. We don't have as much snow as we had last year but have lots more winter left. I always thought January and February were the worst months for snow, but we've gotten blasted in March too. At least in March we know that spring is on the way. We've missed some of the snowfall that has landed in the eastern part of the state. It must be terribly hard for your sister's family to visit the nursing home when your bil doesn't respond to them.

Gloria -- It's so nice to see you today! I sure don't envy your snowfall!

Maggie and Susan -- I hope the sun is shining on you today!

I need to work on some ironing so had better get a move on. Have a marvelous Monday!

Jean -- from Iowa!

Talking Marvelous Monday

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

It is a cool day here in the Heartland. No snow and we sure do need the moisture. Seems like some folks get a lot when they don't need it. I am not a complainer though just statin' the facts. I am actually looking forward to re-joining WW next week. Excuse me, just sneezed twice enough to disturbe the rictor scale. (That is the scale that measures sizmic events) Little Beanie lets us know when he needs to go outside to do his business now. It is easy to see that he is an alpha dog like Ragg Mopp is when they do a stand off. Neither budges. The little guy has heart. They bark up a storm until I say very loudly ENOUGH. Mopp is trying to establish he is the boss and it isn't working very well since Beanie isn't going for it. Half the time Beanie starts the stand off. Tough little character and so loveable and looks grand in his new red collar. He has just about figured how to come up the back steps. I am so glad for this new flooring in my office/shop. Will is working on getting the molding on around the walls near the floor now. He has enough without paint on it to do the closet in what we took off. It doesn't exactly match but it is in the closet after all. All that he is putting in my room is new. Next I get new blinds. Just finished my sf ff double shot latte. YUM. We had lunch there and I had a half sandwitch. We ordered some dark dirt to be delivered to help fill in some ruts in the lawn the roofing guys left with their heavy equipment. If there is any left we can use it in our garden.

GLORIA G-L-O-R-I-A (that is me singing). Girlfriend it has been so long no hear from. You know if you have read anything here lately that I made a glass building (of their choice) for the "regular" posters for Christmas. I will make you one if you wish and will pm me your address please. It is so good to hear from you.

JEAN That is funny that you showed up for work and no one was there. Nice to have a day off to get your "whatevers" done. The holidays are gone and we are left with the residu.

DONNA FAYE Hope your aches and pains have subsided. Isn't it nice the day the dog comes from the goomer. So fluffy and smelling good. We haven't been out to do any shopping so don't know how the shelves are doing here. The parking lot wasn't full at all when we passed by Wal*Mart today.

SUSAN Hope you are staying warm. The news indicated you got hammered in your area. Hope all is well with you and you didn't lose your electricity.

A friend left a pot of chili on our doorstep. I need to portion it out and freeze some. However, I do need to see if I need to jazz it up any before I do that. It will probably be good as is because she does know spices. We will have some for dinner with cornbread muffins.

Type at y'all later. Have a great evening MAGNOLIAS!

Good morning to you ladies! It is cool here this morning but nice and dry. We are supposed to be warming up into the 60's sometime this week so I am all for that. I am glad the holidays are over for the most part except for this weekend, but we don't do anything. We did a couple times when we were younger, but the fact is, drivers here drive so dangerously sober, it really frightens me to be out on the road when there might be a lot of drunks, as in New Year's Eve so we stay home, period. I told Thomas if he wanted to come over and his parents had plans he was welcome to come spend the night on Friday. I haven't heard anything so I guess he and his parents have their own plans.

Maggie: I am a big lover of good chili. Unfortunately, a lot of restaurant chili all tastes the same to me, like Hormel canned chili, which I hate. There is a local restaurant chain in South Bend called, "Between the Buns" and they have some of the best chili from I restaurant I have ever had. They have "pub" style food and I have never had anything that wasn't really good there. My son, dil and grandson eat there a lot. I used to eat their with my work friends a lot as they used to have one of the restaurants about 2 blocks from the law firm. Glad your room is getting finished. I think I am going to tackle the downstairs house cleaning. We didn't put up decor this year since we weren't doing anything at our house and wouldn't have any visitors so I don't have that to clean up.

Jean: I think a big part of the problem with my sister's husband is the kids don't visit him a lot and when they do, they are shocked at changes. His MS seems to be transitioning a lot faster now and so changes are really evident. Last time I saw him, which was about 2 years ago, he was belted into a high wheel chair and much more invalid looking. We have known him for about 12 years and he was walking with braces on his legs and a cane when we first knew him, totally lucid, etc. It is sad what this disease does to people. Jack's niece (his sister's dd) has MS and his was diagnosed in her 20's. So far she does very well and I am hoping the type she has won't progress badly. I am watching "Knitty Gritty" and she just gave a great tip about wooden needles that have lost their gauge number. She said to measure the needle, mark the gauge # with permanent marker on the needle then to make sure the marker doesn't come off, put a thin coat of glue over the top of the written number! I would bet clear nail polish might do the trick too. I have often had that problem of not knowing what size the needle is so what a great suggestion.

I guess I should get started on my cleaning. Hope you ladies have a great day! Faye

Talking Titilating Tuesday

GOOD MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It is 45 as I type with a breeze coming up. Will is getting the face board put up in my office. Of course little Beanie wants to help. He has learned now to navigate the steps up to the back door. He was so cute yesterday when he was sitting at the bottom of the steps looking up at me in the doorway and I called his name a encouraged him and his tail was going a mile a minute and he got his little self up all the steps. He had to swim up part of the way but he made it. Today he is much better navigating the steps. I will be so glad when my "stuff" is all back in my room here. I feel discombooberated if that is a word and how in the world do you spell it anyway. I wrote it phonicaly. Not much exciting or out of the ordinary going on here this day. Did I say I am really looking forward to Monday and going back to WW. I have the diswasher going and a few things soaking in the sink that I will tackle when I get off of here. It seems I have never ran that dishwasher when it was full. Just the two of us ~ we don't dirty up many dishes. I always hand wash the flat ware.

DONNA FAYE I love chili also but never eat it out. There are so many different ways to make it and I just don't want to take the chance of not liking it the way that rastaurant makes it so just order something else. But of course if I am in a place that is famous for thier chili I will eat some. We didn't put up much for Christmas but I will take what little we did down soon. Maybe after the first for my village looks so cute all decorated with Christmas lights.

JEAN & SUSAN & GLORIA & GAIL A good day to y'all. Gail how goes it with you these days?

Got to go. Get back in the kitchen and get my dishes done. Figure out what it is we want for dinner and get something thawed. Type at y'all later

Good Evening, Flowers! I was here earlier but got interrupted and am just now getting back. It was a gorgeous day in my neighborhood with bright blue sky, NO wind, sunshine all day, and much warmer temperatures this afternoon. I'm hoping for a December thaw! I spent the whole morning at church. We counted $$ from 6 services, couldn't get the figures to balance so had to double check everything, finally did balance after counting the loose money several times, and I put the individual giving in the computer. I had a half hour between church and the gift shop so came home for a quick sandwich. The gift shop is selling all Christmas items at 40% off so I was busy there too. After a nap in front of the TV, here I am!

Maggie -- Bob's office was closed yesterday and he suggested taking a road trip to Sioux City. We needed a few things from SAMs and had a couple toys that Maddy and Kolby forgot when they left Christmas night. I wish SC was a half hour closer since it has lots more shopping, eating, entertainment choices. An hour drive late at night, during the winter, is too long. I hope you are back in your office soon. I hate the feeling of having my "stuff" out of place. We need to do some painting and I am dreading that big time. But we have to do that first before I can get new carpet so . . . . . .

"Gma" -- Bob's sister has MS also; she still lives on her own although I think it is in an apt. complex where the next step is assisted living. Over the years she has ended up in the hospital because she gets run down from not enough sleep, etc. She retired from being a school counselor and has done much better. She has some personality quirks but she's always been a PIA at times, so that's nothing new. She's probably had it for 35+ years.

Susan -- I am worried about you!!!!! I do hope you are ok.

It is getting close to bedtime and I am tired tonight. I hope I will sleep all night since I had a good nap earlier in the evening. Have a wonderful Wednesday tomorrow!

Jean -- and from Iowa!
