Red face Trying to quit smoking and lose weight...tuff!

I am trying to quit smoking. I never really believed the whole quitting smoking and its connection to weight gain until now. When I started my calorie journal I decided to write small passages on the back of each page that explains what I went through that day to help me and the majority of the time I wrote about how many cigarettes I had. Example from my entry last week:
"At work they decided to have a pizza party to celebrate the director's birthday and when I came back from lunch someone had put a slice of piping hot veggie pizza on my desk. I couldn't seem to turn it away and I ate it! But at least I only had 1 cigarette today!"
It wasn't my intention to track the number of cigarettes. The days I ate more or went over my calorie count, those were the days I didn't smoke or smoked only once. The days I ate less I smoked more. How is this going to work?! Good Lord!

Are there any other smokers/weight losers who are having the same dificulty? If so, what are you doing to help curve the food cravings without smoking?

Hey Shelly,
I am in the same boat as you. It is tough but not impossible to do both. I am going to do both. I had lost 15pds in April then quit smoking in May and gained 20pds back I comforted myself with food when I missed smoking. This time I am going to add exercise. When I feel the need for a smoke I am going to take a walk or something rather then eat. Now that I know where I went wrong.
About 2yrs ago I quit smoking for 3yrs but didnt gain or lose weight. Well one thing I found was that I didn't huff and puff nearly as bad as before. All this time I thought it was because of the extra weight and it was from the smoking. So it makes sense to kick both as long as you are ready, because it will be hard. Just be prepared for it so you dont set yourself up to fail. Have a plan of what you are going to do when the cravings get strong, cigarette or food.
You can do it! Good luck
Kelly

I noticed the connection yesterday.... someone said something to me that really stressed me out - when I got home, all I wanted was a cigarette. Well, I'm not smoking anymore, so I ate a huge salad - somewhat ravenously - out of character for me.

Then I went for a really intense jog. I finally started to feel better.

Its like, I needed both of those things to help calm me .... in the old days, it would have been 5 or 6 cigarettes. But I must say, even though I never smoked a huge amount, I have already clearly noticed health benefits from not smoking. I don't cough in the mornings at all anymore.

My Mom used Chantix to quit after 30 years of smoking. And I used it and had quit for a month then started back cause my papa passed away and my granny that lives next to me was stressing me out. I need to get back on it, it helped me alot.
