Default NSV: The dryer is no longer my enemy

My, I am chatty today. Must be the rain, keeping me indoors.

I have been recently experiencing the wonder and glory of just washing my 100% cotton jeans on hot and putting them through the dryer. I NEVER used to wash in hot or use the dryer on anything I thought had the vaguest chance of shrinking. I don't have to be afraid of that anymore! In fact, I kind of hope they do shrink, so I'll be able to get some more wear out of them before they become comically big. If my jeans get too mucky in the garden, and I want to wear them again right away, into the washer and dryer they go. And, oh my goodness, they're so much softer and more comfortable when you do that.

Congratulations!
I never dry anything! It's such a pain. I haven't been able to throw everything in the dryer since I was a size 12. It's funny how weight complicates even the simplest things, like doing laundry.

Can't wait to get back to where you are!

Haha yeah its been years since I have hung my jeans to dry. I tend to put things in the dryer hoping they'll shrink. My karate uniform is also 100% cotton so it has definitely shrunk

ha, that's a great one!!!

I've always washed and dried my stuff but have definitely gotten to the point where I can tell the difference in something fitting right out of the dryer vs. having to loosen up throughout the day to be comfortable. Now a lot of my stuff is falling down by the end of the day!

I can't stand the stiff feeling of air dried clothing, so I used to just refuse to buy anything that might shrink. I love not having to worry so much about it anymore. I even took a pair of jeans that were getting too big that I dearly loved and alternated boiling them (only the top half so as not to shrink the length) and drying them on the hottest setting I could get in order to get a bit more wear out of them. I have a couple shirts I am about to try that with too.

Okay, apologies for hijacking this thread, but I'm struck by a previous post.

FitGirlyGirl, may I ask how you boil your clothes? In a really big pot? On top of the stove?

Because I just have to know.

(I'm picturing a particular scene in "Fatal Attraction" right now. The one in which the kid's bunny ... sorry, I know, that's a spoiler.)

Or are you doing the Pioneer Woman thing & boiling the clothes out back in a kettle on Monday morning wash days?

[Apologies to catherinef. Please continue with our regularly scheduled thread.]

lol saef, i too have boiled jeans, mainly wranglers to get that -perfect- fit. big pot on stove, and drape the part you want shrunk into it, let boil for a bit. me personally, if i want that exact, just for me fit, as soon as they're cool enough i wriggle into them and wear them until they dry. they dry exactly to -my- shape instead of a general 'everyone who is a size x, must be shaped like this to look as good as the mannequin in the store- shape. also, stepping into a hot shower while wearing them then walking around in them until they dry works too, but thats easier to do on hot, dry days when you can be outside

LOL - I use my canning pot. I put the part I want to boil in the water and hold the other part up so as not to start a fire. I have done the walk around in them until they dry thing too, but with those particular jeans I was trying to get extra shrinkage goin' on.

Yep, I definitely use the dryer as part of my strategy to make clothes fit longer as I lose weight.

What? You mean to tell me I could have saved myself years of frustration by not putting things in the dryer? Why didn't I ever think of that? I always do a little stretching by hand, put them on and do several squats and leg stretches and then I am good to go. I can't wait until I don't have to do that anymore.

LOL! The drier has become my friend! There are so many pants that I can get a couple hours tug-free wear out of when they're fresh out of the drier. After that, I have to walk around with my hand yanking up the waist. (I'm not one for belts, I guess. )

And my new lack of hips really exemplifies the problem!
