Default Clothes Sizing... SO Confused!!

I have always felt like I wear a smaller size than most people at my weight. At 230, I was a 16, but my pants were all pretty baggy. I am now about 10 pounds down from there, and I went into my closet the other day for some motivation. I found a pair of pants that I wore 40 pounds ago (size 12), and back then they were pretty snug. I tried them on, and they fit, well enough that I wore them that day. But I'm so confused as to why they fit... I am still well above the weight I was when I wore them, and I can tell that I look a lot heavier too. Anybody else have this happen? I gained a lot of weight, but all my clothes still fit for the most part. I'm not complaining - mainly I'm just worried that I'm going to lose 40 pounds and not be able to notice...

i feel as though every time i gain and lose weight it seems to deposit itself and disappear in different places every time.

before i got pg with my son i was 250. after i had him i got down to 260 pretty easily. i tried on some clothes i wore when i was about that size (before i had gotten down to 250)and they were too small. then i got pg w my daughter a few months later (my kids are 12 mos apart). i havent lost too much weight since she has been born but i can tell that the weight is def shifted differently.

also..now when i lose weight, i always see it in my face first..where as a few years ago, it was always in my chest and stomach first.

sorry..in feel like im rambling but i think weight just has a way of shifting. you might be smaller in your tummy but your behind/legs might be bigger, etc.

ohhhh also..i have a pair of jeans that i fit into just before i found out i was pg w my son. like i literally wore them for a month. i was 250 (give or take a few lbs..prob around 255 or so) when i got them. i try them on now, 37lbs heavier, to see how far i have to go, and they arent *that* snug. like i wouldnt wear them in public but i could def zip them. its a mystery lol

What's your body shape? Maybe the weight you gained is mostly in the upper body? I wonder about this sometimes too (though I'm wondering how people who are bigger than me fit into smaller sizes than me).

When I was 235 I was wearing a size 18 in Jeans. I am now wearing a 16 in jeans. I think I could go down to a 14 if it weren't for my waist. Sizing confuses me too....

More of your weight is in your upper body than lower.

Also, age of clothing. As people get into vanity sizing more and more, the size numbers become increasingly meaningless.

I remember I had a pair of jeans I inherritted from my mother that were labeled one size were the same as a modern day jean labeled a different size.

Don't measure your progress by clothing labels. Get out the measuring tape instead.

I agree with astrophe- if the clothes are older that could be part of it as sizes seem to change over time. I mean wasn't Marilyn Monroe a size 13 in her day but in Modern day sizing that was actually a size 6?

I've been able to wear a size 13 in juniors when I was 160 and could wear it until I weighed around 180. Thus, I'm going by the measuring tape instead of sizes to keep me encouraged. This is the longest period of time that I have exercised (a little over a month), and by measuring for the first time, I'm sticking to it. Sizes aren't so important.

i do understand what you are saying about the age of clothes in relation to size...but idk if that is the case here. she isnt necessarily saying anything about the size (they arent new jeans..they were old jeans, size 12.and she might not even be able to walk into a store and fit into a 12)..but how can she weigh more than she previously did while wearing the same jeans?? and not just 5 pounds, but 30. sorry..that came across mean but idk if vanity sizing is the case here. maybe she lost inches and not as many pounds??

clothing size is VERY weird... I am about 170 right now and in a 14.. I am also only 5'2". So being short I am very compact.. haha. I also have a lot of booty.

I also have gained weight back this time around in different places. I gained more in my stomach and arms than I used to have.

Yes, exactly!!

pink - I think you're right... Most of my weight gain is in my tire area, so I guess my pants aren't affected that much. And the pants made me a little more muffin top ish then I remember, so that makes sense. Hopefully the weight will all come off of this tire too

This is possible. 5 lb of muscle takes up less space than 5 lb of fat.

They both weight the same, but the fat tissue is bulkier and not sleek like muscle. So you can weight the same but have less inches.

OH my gosh! Clothing sizes are stressing me out! I have lost around 75lbs but I have only went down like one pant size, two shirt sizes and THREE BRA SIZES. So irritating! But hey, better than going up right? Also, where you buy the clothes make a difference.

I've lost a clothing size but gone UP a bra size. Same band size. I guess I just haven't lost any of the weight I gained in the boobs?

I don't put too much value in clothing sizes. It's how it fits and makes you look that counts.
