Default Barefoot Running!

I'm starting with 5 minutes (.5 mile) after my regular 5-7 mile run. I know about the Vibram 5-finger shoes, but I'm just going barefoot. Everything (hips, knees, feet) hurts less after I do it, compared to the long run in my shoes.
Who's doing it?
Who's going to try it?
Advice for me?

My advice to you, is maybe don't do it 2 days in a row. The second night, my feet were sore!

I was reading about those shoes and I kinda wish I had the extra $$ to get a pair! I am not running barefoot, but I am curious to see how you progress with it! Please keep us updated.

I was doing about a mile a day barefoot for awhile and loved it. I'm not sure why I stopped except I couldnt do it at the gym anymore (got yelled at) and I only like barefoot on the tread since I dont have Vibrams.

I used to run barefoot on the beach when I was on vacation for up to 4 miles at a stretch. And I agree, the foot chafing and blisters weren't fun. The other thing that happened was my calves got incredibly tight. Perhaps I was running on my toes.

I love running barefoot - adds a playfulness to the exercise. Can't do it here in the city though.

Running barefoot on the beach is a whole different animal than barefoot running on a solid surface.

I'm planning on trying it! I think I'll start with 5 mins and work my way up to 15 or 20. I can't wait.

I've seen a boy running barefoot (teenager) at my gym recently-- I've noticed that being barefoot makes him look really graceful.

alicat, where are you running? I've wanted to try barefoot running for a while, but I can't afford the "shoes" and I don't see how I could go anywhere without them. I guess I could try a track, but I'm not even sure where one is.

Interesting, my son has shoes like those that he uses rock climbing. I have also seen him just walking around in them. I am not sure how I would feel about the toes.

Hey, yay all you barefoot runners! I've been running on the city's bike trail system. It's smooth cement. I googled barefoot running, and there's a lot of info about the correct posture and whatnot, but essentially you ARE running more on the front or ball of your foot. If you watch the videos online, the heel strikes the ground after the midfoot. This is how I run with shoes, too. A girl actually stopped me on the bike path a few months ago to comment on my "weird" running posture. It made me self-conscious, so ever since, I've been trying to learn more to figure out why I run like I do. My heel never hits the ground first like it does when I'm walking. Turns out it looks like my way is actually better for you and is more natural. I do feel like I am lighter on my feet than oher runnrs I see. It almost feels like I'm a boat and my feet paddle the ground past me, if that makes any sense. I will keep you all posted, but so far, so good.
