Default Check out WedMD.com about low-carb!

great new article! study done show low carbing lowers blood pressure....also cholesterol and blood sugar. The main thing this article talked about was the blood pressure though! they compared this diet to Alli! I have two uncles who lost a lot of weight on low carb and lowered their cholesterol levels. I've been following a low carb diet (again) since 01/04 and have lost 12 pounds. I do not feel hungry and I have no cravings for sweets whatsoever and before I constantly craved sweets. I know this WOE isnt for everyone but I just wanted to share this info

I've actually been doing some research on small-particle-size LDL for my FIL (apparently particle size is very important in determining heart attack risk), and a lot of the research suggests a low-carb diet might be beneficial to increase particle size. More evidence that different things work for different folks, with different medical statuses.

He's taking the info to his doctor. It's interesting, because he does have to work to maintain a healthy weight, and pretty much low carb is the only thing that works to take weight off of him (he maintains on a moderate carb plan, and goes back to lower carbs when he needs to drop a few pounds). Maybe that's his body's way of telling him what he needs!

I don't need a study to tell me that since I did an experiment with n=1 (myself as the only subject). I've lost weight before on low calorie diets but was always frustrated by the fact that my vitals never improved significantly (i.e., blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, etc.).

This time I lost weight and have been maintaining a relatively low carb life style and everything has improved. No more blood pressure medication. Good cholesterol way up, bad cholesterol way down, blood sugar levels normal, etc.

I find it funny when I see people arguing about whether one kind of diet is better than other, etc. I say, just try it out and see for yourself. Maybe low carb won't work for everyone, but no point arguing against it when current way of eating is putting you in worst physical condition.

BTW, if anyone wants to learn more about all the research that has been done on the low carb way of eating, Good Calories, Bad Calories is an excellent book. Not a diet book per say but goes into great detail about how we come to believe that low fat, high carb diet is good for us and how that is exactly the opposite of what we should be eating.

If anyone couldn't find the article on WebMD.com, here it is

Very impressive:

"But when researchers looked at changes in blood pressure, they found nearly half of those who followed the low-carbohydrate group had their blood pressure medication decreased or discontinued during the study, compared to only 21% of those in the orlistat group.

Overall, systolic (the top number in a blood pressure reading) dropped an average of 5.9 points among the low-carb diet group, compared with an increase of 1.5 points in the orlistat group."
