I lost my writing samples in a fit of madness but I have poems. Could I use a poem as a writing sample. Surely I'd get points for thinking outside the box and being creative? U think?
For application? I don't think so, I think they require academic writing samples. You need to call and ask admissions! Unless of course, this is MA in Creative Writing
It looks like you got your problem solved, but just out of curiosity, what kind of program(s) are you applying for?
It's probably gonna be something that goes way over my head, since it requires a writing sample... that creative stuff is like a foreign language to me. (I'm in a Biochemistry PhD program at the moment.)

I was curious about this too! I have my PhD in Social Psychology and I would never dream of sending a poem as a writing sample for my graduate application (possibly a manuscript or journal article I'd written) but I could see it being a good thing in a creative writing program. I think for the most part, programs just like to see that you can write coherently.
If it is a science program definitly send in academic writings. I just applied to counseling psychology programs and though our discipline fields are different I think the requirements would be similar. Good luck!! Its nerveracking for sure, I heard back from one school but am still waiting for to hear back from another lol.
