so...er... i went to the doctors today..
Yeh i went, i sat down and asked "where do i start?"
i listed everything ABSOLUTELY everything that was bothering me (including my second tom in 8 days! WTF!) and he examined me, did the whole stethoscope thing and then felt my tummy. He thinks i may have PCOS. im booked in for a scan and to give some blood.
It was so good to get someone who listened to me. Last time i saw this horrible older female doctor who wasnt to trim and when i moaned about weight issues she just said but you arent fat. okay lady listen i am OBESE on that table you posted on YOUR wall. Just because you are bigger than i am doesnt mean i dont have an issue, it just means you dont see yours!
that horrible woman made me cry. i havent been back since and its been 6 months of crazy periods, mood swings, body hair and acne.
just needed to vent, oh and confess that i ate pizza earlier and now i feel crap.
white flour is not my friend people!

Sorry you feel ooky honey...
Glad you found a better doctor. I hate the ones that try to minimize your issues - I had an older man as my doctor before last who always made me feel like a hysterical woman who didn't have anything better to do than go to the doctor for no good reason. Dropped him!
Hope your tests work out ok.

I'm so glad for you that you feel better at ease with your doctor now. I'm studying myself to be one, and I have to say: acting like the woman you described means that this person hasn't learnt very much in medical school! I'd never treat a patient like that myself. I hope your issues get sorted out soon

Good for you for getting checked out. I hate going to the doctor for anything other than exercise related injuries. I hope everything goes well for you.

Aww I'm sorry! I think those charts are stupid as far as what is "normal" weight to be honest..everyone wears it differently and someone could weigh the exact same as me, same height, and be two sizes smaller. It's crazy. I feel your pain about doctors, it seems like it gets harder and harder to find a GOOD one..that actually listens to you and doesn't just try and rush you out the door throwing meds on you. I'm sorry the pizza made you sick but..mmm...pizza

From one PCOS'er to a potential...... good luck! It isn't a great diagnosis but one that is treatable. Let me know!

I have the same problem, I have all the symptoms of PCOS, but not ONE SINGLE doctor or gyno I have been to thinks it's necessary to do blood work or anything or to treat it since I'm not trying to conceive. They all tell me "we'll worry about that down the road. Bring it up whenever you decide to have a baby." Like seriously, its ok for me to suffer with awful periods and hair and a battle for weight loss unless I'm wanting a baby. Blah!

princess SEE SOMEONE else. an endocronoligist i think is a hormone specialist right? my doctor basically said if it is, i better have a family sooner rather than later, but that just is not an option for me, so i will just have to see what happens.
thanks Heather, im hoping it wont be, in some ways, but in others it would be nice to KNOW ya know?

That's the problem, with my insurance I have to be referred to a specialist like an endocrinologist. And since I'm not trying to conceive, that equals no need for a specialist.... poo!

I have PCOS and I work in health care... women's health.
Often times, blood work and scans are not really necessary to make the diagnosis of PCOS. It's nice to have as a concrete confirmation but it doesn't change the treatment all that much.
It is a biatch, like heathermcg said, but manageable. And, I have 4 children. Not everyone has issues with infertility.
good luck Paula. I'm glad you found someone you are comfortable with. And someone who is competent in modern day medicine

I'm gonna be a thread crasher sorry: I think its great that you've decided to have a healthier lifestyle not only for yourself but it will be inspiring for your future patients as well. My doctor weighs a good 100 lbs more than me and when I left there, last summer, she gave me a weighloss pamphlet and warned me about my BMI. I couldn't take her concern seriously, how can she expect me to eat healthy and exercise to lose weight when she can't take her own advice? I have a hard time listening to anyone who can't practice what they preach. I know that weight has nothing to do with knowledge, but it still bothers me. Not only that, but at the time I had just finished track season and I was pretty bulky from all the weight lifting, it was pretty obvious that I wasn't 188 lbs of flub, I was at the time an athlete, and it really irritated me. Anyway, that was a rant but I mostly just wanted to say that I think you've taken great steps for your personal health as well as your career! Congrats.

so do you ladies with PCOS eat an insulin resistance type diet? i think im going to have to. its definately carb sensitivity that is a huge issue with me not being able to lose weight and feeling very overly hungry etc.
