Inspired by the One Good Holiday Tune thread (and admittedly by a dose of Straight Dope): Are there any Christmas (or any other December holiday, let's be omnisectarian) songs/records you DON't like? That make you want to drive red-hot pokers through your ears and kill kittens when you hear them? Too glurgey? Too irreverent? Or just a case of bad singers happening to good songs? C'mon people, vent!
I cannot. CANNOT. Stand the Band-Aid "Do They Know It's Christmas" song. It makes sweeping generalizations about Africa that aren't true (nothing grows! It never snows! There is no water flowing but tears!) and ignores the fact that it's quite possible the people don't know it's Christmas BECAUSE THEY ARE OF RELIGIONS THAT DON'T CELEBRATE IT (the song was written to raise funds for the hungry in Ethiopia, which has a very large Muslim population...so the entire idea that they'd be better off if they celebrated Christmas like we did is a little flawed).
I just find it so ethnocentric and condescending. Like, oh, poor Africans, they don't know it's Christmas! And it plays on all the stereotypes of Africa being all desert, when in fact, there are plenty of places where it snows/rains/etc on the continent.
Oh, I hate it so much.
Also, the Jessica Simpson/Nick Lachey "Baby it's Cold Outside" makes me want to stab my eardrums until I can no longer hear.
The whole freakin' Chipmunks Christmas album. Actually anything Chipmunks makes me want to throw myself off a cliff.
Other than that, I'm pretty ok with most Christmas music. I'd rather it didn't start playing in the stores until AFTER Thanksgiving, but I've given up on that one.
I thought the song "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" was mildly amusing until I caught part of a 30 minute cartoon they made out of it. SO lame, now the song is just dang irritating!!
Please don't throw tomatoes, but I dislike Christmas Music in general. I worked retail for many many years during my teenage years and early twenties, and they played it nonstop. Now I don't like to hear it. I love the Holidays though.
I don't know why, but hearing Celine Dion singing Christmas music really grinds my gears. I'm not a huge fan of her voice in general, but some of her Christmas tune choices really don't sit well with her type of singing.
I can't stand Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. I don't know why that song irritates me to no end.
The downer-ish lyrics Judy Garland sings in Meet Me in St. Louis ("Next year all our troubles will be out of sight" ... "we'll have to muddle through somehow"), or the more upbeat Sinatra version that seems to be the way most singers perform it now ("From now on our troubles ... hang a shining star on the highest bough")?

Judy's is the worst! But I still don't like it by anyone. Wouldn't you know it. I walked over to Trader Joe's today and it was playing when I walked in.
