Default WAY hungry when I count?

Why is it that on days that I keep track of each food I eat and actually write it down, I am WAY WAY hungrier than on days that I just watch my portions and guesstimate my caloric intake?

I want to keep better track of my caloric intake so I can lose more weight and have fewer binge days, to hold myself more accountable, but I seriously feel SOOOO hungry on days when I count each food. Boo!

Am I the only one this happens to?!

I would guess that you actually eat less when you write it all down so you get hungrier. Research shows that just monitoring a behavior (like eating) usually changes it.

That's my guess!

My food journal has done so much for my efforts. If you are hungry I would increase your fresh veggie and water consumption. No reason to be hungry.

Yeah, I would guess you are eating more when you don't count. Sounds like maybe you are trying to eat too few calories. Maybe try a bit more?

It sounds like you might not be eating enough when you count. WHAT you eat is just as important as you much you eat - because eating more filling stuff will help you not to feel hungry.

Maybe you could give us a sample of what you eat on a day you count and we can offer suggestions that will keep you from being hungry?

I was thinking along the same lines as Photochick.

"What" I eat is as important as how many calories I eat. If I'm eating enough healthy foods, I am seldom really hungry. And, I find that even if I eat a lot of foods that are unhealthy, I'm still hungry. I also need to make sure that I get enough protein and fiber. Those two elements have always been lacking in my diet. Now that I'm trying to make sure I get enough of each, I just feel so much better and am far less hungry.

Keep working it until you find what is right for you!

How about if you log it the night before?

I'm with the rest - you could easily be eating more when you aren't tracking.

Then you are probably eating the wrong stuff. How much is good food and how much is 100-calorie packs, fat-free, low calorie stuff that doesn't fill you up? It has been shown that protein keeps you feeling satisfied the longest. How much are you eating? I have some with every meal and snack. How about posting what you eat for a day and let us see where we could help you more.

Honestly the truth is that I can eat 1300 calories and be starving. But I can also eat 1300 calories and be so stuffed that I can't eat anthing more.

It's all just in what you eat and how you eat it.

Default Here is today for an example.

I should be stuffed, but I know I will want to eat later. I esp. get hungry at bed time! Its the worst.

Brk
2 ww tst with sugar free jam
coffee with French Vanilla Fat free

Small tangerine
Rice cake

lunch
1.5 cp steamed potato
1.5 cp full fat polska Kielbasa (bad)
French cut green beans cup
teas. butter (smart balance)

dinner
Salad with 1/4 avacodo
1 salmon patty

Tea

I figure my points around 26 - 28
I think I should be having 18 - 20 but there is NO WAY

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks so much.

It is probably a combination of not eating enough substantial food when you count and also being focused on food, whereas if you didn't count maybe you'd focus on other things and therefore 'forget' to be hungry?

I don't know what this is - is it toast? Diet bread? Is there any protein here? I would say that this was definitely setting you up for being hungry later.

Why not more veggies with dinner? What's in the salad? What's in your salmon patty? How big is it?

You think or you're sure?

18 points is something like 900 calories which sounds low to me. I don't remember from my WW days, but I can't imagine that a WW diet would keep you at 900 calories. They tend to allow more calories than that.

If you'd skipped the kielbasa (which is very high calorie/high fat) you'd be a lot closer to lower calories.

But aside from that, there is no way that what you described is 28 points, I don't think. Unless you're eating really large servings, or you're using a lot of fat to cook things. Even with the kielbasa, I don't see how you could possibily have gotten 28 points out of that.

I'm seeing a lot of discrepancies, which makes it hard to actually say what the problem is here.

The biggest flag to me is that you don't really know how many points/calories you should be having. It's really hard to know how to plan your daily meals when you don't really know what you should be eating.

How much do you weigh now? How tall are you? What kind of food do you like to eat? Give us some more info and we can help you out.

^^ Good points, perhaps you need to be more specific with how you record your meals, portion sizes, brands, etc. Specific vegetables instead of 'salad'. Good luck carcar05 and dmc2009.

Off topic, Photochick I love your latest blog post, I completely agree.
