I have had a couple people tell me this week that I need to be doing that. I drink about 50-60 ounces of water a day, but according to them, I should be drinking more like 90.
im not entirely sure that that's right. I would like more information before i started trying to do that >.< It sounds pretty enourmous. And the amount you would pee!
The very best way to tell if you're getting enough water is (sorry to be gross) to look at the color of your urine.
If it is pale yellow, you're good. If it is dark yellow, you're dehydrated and should up the water. Totally clear might indicate you're drinking too much.
The amount of water you need to drink varies with your sodium consumption, amount you sweat, and your body itself. Ninety ounces sounds like alot - unless that's supposed to be the amount of total fluids you consume in a day, including tea, coffee, soup, etc...
The 1/2 ounce per pound of body weight, is probably the most dangerous water myth out there for anyone who isn't of average body weight. I weigh more than twice what I should - but my kidneys aren't twice the size and capacity of the kidneys of an average weight person's, and my water needs aren't twice that of an average person's, either (which the 1/2 ounce rule would suggest).
Drinking water can be very helpful for weight loss, but more and more of the experts are saying that drinking according to thirst generally DOES satisfy our water requirements, and the 6 to 8 glasses of water that have been endlessly recommended INCLUDE the moisture in other foods and beverages besides water.
You cannot drink an infinite amount of water. Your kidneys cannot manage it when you go above a certain point. Here in Holland there is a famous accident, where students decided to do their drinking games with water instead of alcohol, "Much more healthy!". Well, guess what? One of the guys ingested about 8 l of water and got into the hospital. He hasn't endured any irreversible damage (as far as I know) but it is certainly a thing to keep in mind.
That being said, I should up my own water intake a bit. I usually drink no more than 1 l or so and I really should; I'm very prone to urinary tract infection (TMI?).
I drink at LEAST 3 Liters (around 100 oz) of pure water (not including soups/teas) in a day. I have kidney problems (stones-- :-( ) ...and every doctor I've seen tells me to drink more. It's extremely odd. I drink around 3 L...yet when I did a 24 hour urine collection a couple months ago for the doc...I only had around 2 L of urine. He told me I had to drink even more... so really I think it depends on the person...what is good for one is not good for the other.
MXgirl_ I have the exact same problem! My uroilogist told me drink a minium of a gallon a day but would love it if i came closer to 2 gallons per day. He told me my urine should be clear. He said that is how to tell when your drinking enough water. I aim for the gallon but dont make it most days. If i drink a soft drink my kidneys know it!!!!
I read a book on water, it was called water for life and it said you are suppose to drink enouph water to make your urine almost clear (unless you take vitamins which will make it more yellow) and you are suppose to drink more if you weigh more. according to the book, tea, coffee or anything else other than water doesn't count because the caffein in those drinks actually make you more dehydrated. I try to drink around 64-80oz of water a day, although according to the book i should drink a little more, and yes, i pee all the time
...I haven't drank a glass/bottle of water more than maybe twice in the past month or two.
...I have drank a lot of diet soda tho.
...I just googled drinking water and weight loss thanks to this thread, and found a website talking about the correlation between water and weight loss, and I think I'm gonna start drinking water...
