lupus weight loss
hey Nikki
Carla here.
I've had lupus 16 years.
i've had 3 serious flares.
each time, they put me on 40 mg of prednisone.
my ideal weight (I look and feel great): 121
my typical weight before getting sick: 132-134
my weight now: 141
the prednisone has always made me gain weight. except the 2nd flare. that time i was holding a lot of water in my legs because of the kidney failure. so at the same time i went on the prednisone, i was given prescription panty hose and diuretics, which squeezed the water out of my legs (and the rest of me!), and i developed thrush (yeast) so i went on the candida diet (no yeast, no sugar, few carbs). Even after getting off the diuretics and no longer needing the panty hose, I maintained my ideal weight for 2 1/2 years (until i fell off the wagon with the diet), including the year I was on prednisone.
i was also getting some exercise. i had had a stroke, so i was swimming (walking was really hard), then i built up to walking and kept swimming as well.
Right now I've been on prednisone for about 6 months (post flare #3). i am at 141. in the winter i gained back to 146. i rejoined the gym and went back on a whole foods diet (using suggestions from celebrityfitclub.com) and am now down to 141. I'm 42. I'd *love* to be back at 121, but would be OK with weighing 131.
lots of us lupies find gluten-free is really helpful!
