Rest assured you are taking the first and probably most important step by losing weight. My other words of advice -- ensure that you balance the carbs in your diet as evenly as possible throughout the day -- avoid fast acting carbs (white flour, white sugar, any highly processed foods) -- keep up the exercise.
Metformin (the generic name for Glucophage) is probably the only oral medication for controlling blood sure that does NOT encourage weight gain. It may not help your loss but definitely won't hinder it. The most common side effects would be 'lower-tummy' related problems in the first few weeks of taking it.
