Talking Ideas For Chips!!

I need a healthy alternative for my gaucomole( I know thats mispelled. Sorry) Its homemade and already addited to my calories for the day. But the chips arent. And just a couple of chips has a ridiculous amount of calories. What else can I use, I need something crunchy , maybe somekind of crackers. Any suggestions??

Hmmm maybe toast some pita bread? If you get mini pitas you can just pop them in a toaster slot (just make sure you'll be able to get them out), and for the big ones I imagine you could probably put them in an oven or toaster oven. They would get pretty crunchy.

Unless you have a food dehydrator, this probably won't help you any, but I thought I would mention it anyway.

The first year my parents had a dehydrator, they went a bit mad with it. We dehydrated very thin slices of zucchini. They were very chip-like (crispy, but some also a little bit chewy). They didn't have much flavor of their own, in fact future batches, we soaked them in salt water to give them a bit more flavor before drying.

You could probably also bake them in the oven on a cookie sheet at a low setting.

I buy the multi-grain tortillas (130 calories each), cut them into eight triangles, sprinkle on a little kosher salt, and toast them on a baking sheet at 350 for about five minutes on each side. Very tasty!

Aside from making low-fat dippers from tortillas or pitas, you might like it as a veggie dip? Pepper strips, cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks and celery all sound like they’d go pretty well with guac to me.

I was also thinking either vegetables or toasting your own chips. You could also get some type of baked chips from the store.

Also, and I know this is kindof random but you can make a mock guacamole using asparagus. A lot of resturants do this to reduce the cost of the avacdo.

1 can (14 oz) asparagus cuts, drained
1 cup finely chopped tomatoes
1/3 cup chopped onions
2 T. finely chopped fresh cilantro
2 T. lowfat mayonnaise
1 T. lime juice
6 drops red pepper sauce
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
dash pepper

recipe directions
Place asparagus in blender. Cover and process til smooth. Mix asparagus and remaining ingredients. Cover and refrigerate at least one hour.

I make guacamole from time to time. I love the stuff. I have to be very careful though with portion size as I tend to overeat it. When I make it, yup, I serve it with veggies. Cucumber spears, celery sticks, grape tomatoes and baby carrots.

Maybe try mini rice cakes (60 calories for 7 to 9 rice cakes) or soy crisps (around 110 calories for 15-20 chips). Also that new Eating Right brand sold by Safeway has potato crisps that were pretty low in calories, I think maybe 110 calories for around 20 crisps. Trader Joe's sells mini rice crackers that are around 110 calories for 35 crackers (they are super small) and pretzel thins that are 110 calories for 23 thins. I've also seen baked tortilla chips that were reasonable in terms of calories.

And, as others have suggested, raw veggies are very crunchy and make a great, very low calorie alternative to chips.

This is too funny. Here in Alaska, asparagus costs at least double what avocados do (at least in the grocery store) when you can even get asparagus!

Personally, I like the ff Pringles and the pretzel slims from Trader Joes -- they describe them as being a "spreadable pretzel" because they are flat.

I take whole wheat tortillas, cut them up, and bake them in the oven. They taste GREAT!

I love the Quaker Oats soy crisps, if you're looking for crackers try the Wasa crackers, they have a bunch of different varieties.

A couple of thoughts
1. mock guac. made with mashed peas (yep, I've done it and it was fine)
2. Guiltless Gourmet baked tortilla chips--lots of flavors available
3. A cracker I got at Costco--multigrain w/added flax--I think the brand was "Food Should Taste Good". Nice crunch, nice flavor, didn't trigger a salty food binge (at least for me).

Yep... I'd go for the mini rice cakes, celery or cucumbers. I'm not sure how many calories are in matzo's but you might wanna look into that.

I love the chips at whole foods.. the organic potato chips that are light salted with sea salt are yummy and 15 are 150 calories.
