Arrow Suspected PCOS

Hi Everyone ,

My name is Martie (Martha) and I am 19 years old.

I menstruate every 2-3 months (if I'm lucky)! And this has been the case since I was 15.

My whole life I was a normal weight right up until the end of last year, I am 5'9" and generally maintained my weight around 135-145 pounds since I was about 14.

But I have recently begin to struggle with my weight, mainly due to what I thought was just a sugar addiction. I put on 30lbs in 3 months. However much I try, I experience uncontrollable sugar lows in the early afternoon.I heard this was due to insulin resitance, attributed to PCOS?

The only other symptom I can see at the moment, is a small skin-flap on my eye.

The only thing I wonder, however, is that I seem to have a high metabolism, and I am sure the weight I put down was due to eating in excess of 5,000cal a day, not a slow metabolism..

My question is, is it possible to be insulin resustant, yet not hypothyroid?

And do you think PCOS is likely in my case?

Thanks for reading and Thanks in advance,

Martie.

Hi Martie

Hypothyroid and insulin resistance are two different conditions controlled by two different glands. I have insulin resistance but my thyroid is normal.

If you know that you were eating that many calories than your weight gain most likely is a simple too much in, not enough out. However, if you suspect that you are insulin resistant...you should be evaluated by a doctor.

irregular periods and skin tags are symptoms of PCOS but are only part of a whole variety that someone may experience.

Good Luck getting the weight off! May it be quick for you!

PCOS has a range of symptoms, of which irregular cycles are one. Other indicators include obesity, hair in odd places (face, back), a fat deposit on the back of your neck, and pain with menstruation. Other conditions can disrupt your cycle, including endometriosis, so PCOS is not your only "option". SO, I would DEFINITELY get a medical opinion, and ask her/him about your cycle irregularities, diabetes, hypoglycemia (a friend of mine has that, with uncontrollable blood sugar levels), and DEFINITELY get your thyroid checked. There are a number of thyroid issues that are completely unrelated to PCOS. GET THEE TO A DOCTOR!!!

Thanks for the rplys, I found them very helpful. I am going to a doctor today. I guess my main concern is my very unstable blood sugar. I am hoping that I can get a prescription for Metfromin, as I have heard it can help the problem.
