Why is that we can only see through Jan 09?

That's strange. The default cut off was 2008, so I increased it to 2020. I went back into my calendar and it was still showing Dec 08 as the default, but when I clicked the "show today" tab it updates. Hopefully not everyone will have to do that and it will default properly.
