My semester started well yesterday, despite a hang up in my financial aid. I'm living close enough to school and far enough from the bus route that it is easier to walk or ride my bike to school. Yesterday I walked there and back. Today I'm going to ride my bike. I'm also going to be taking a Yoga class on Mondays and Wednesdays and a Pilates class on Saturdays. I'm signed up to take something called "Nia," but I don't know what it is other than barefoot dancing. That sounds right up my alley, but it may not agree with my knee, in which case I will have to drop it. I'm also going to be auditing a "Philosophy of the Buddha" class and taking some "MA problems hours" (basically credit for working on my MA paper.) So it's going to be a chill semester, thanks to a tuition waver and a nice TAship. I need a nice semester.

don't we all need nice semesters LMAO...I should get my crap together and get back to school...i only have about a year left of my master's in psych...ugh
|
Didn't get to ride my bike today because when I got it downstairs I discovered I had TWO FLAT TIRES :o ! Bummer. I had to walk to school pretty quickly and I was still late for my Buddha class. Nia is tough, but I'm going to give it a week before I decide whether or not to drop it. After class I was ravenous and wanted to eat everything in sight. Thank goodness the Pizza Hut in our Student Union was out of breadsticks or I would have gone way over my limit for the day. :cbg: I ended up with a headache from low blood sugar. I think if I keep the course I'll start bringing a power bar or something for after class. I also think I may have to bump up my daily caloric intake to supply my new activity level. Tonight I am sore, happy and hungry. I need to just go to sleep, so that I don't eat enything else.

Hannah - I love NIA. Give it a chance. It will grow on you.
My semester is mixed (I started on monday). With the new promotion at work, I'm already hearing grumblings about my schedule. Of course, if it was between work and school - they should have no question my heart lies - no where near them. :) I'm taking a super light load this semester. I have swimming (2 classes for 5 times a week!), spanish and documentary filmmaking. I had my first class meeting for the docu class tonight. My film professor retired last year (after the death of his wife). Which is very bad for me - since I was SUCH a teacher's pet. I've met my new instructor once before but I don't think he knows what to think about me. I think professors either love me or hate me. I feel like I'm doing so much better with exercise and food lately but I'm not see much in the way of results. ARGH. Jessica |
P.S. Where the heck is Tiki? I miss her. I wrote a cheer to bring her back:
Tiki dont mess around no no no Tiki dont mess around bring your bad self down whoo and shake your skirt. :) |
LMAO beautiful cheer...sounds like an awesome class load...maybe that's my problem not gettin back to college...all my classes are so serious :P...and Yes, Tiki, come back!
Hannah sorry to hear about your flat tires, and I know how that stuff can be...I've found that eventually on a low cal diet my metabolism matches it too well and I have to fix it so it doesn't feel starved...an energy bar sounds like a great idea for a boost of energy... Not much on this end...seems like i'm the only one not headin back to school...and you're makin me feel guilty ;) ughhhh...i gotta wait until we're fully settled here though...and a second car is a must if i'm gonna work on my master's through the same school that's 40 miles away...hopefully soon |
Hi everyone!
Just got back from vacation yesterday. I had an awesome time! Now I feel rested and recharged! What is Nia? |
Welcome back Mauv! Glad to hear your vacation was relaxing.
Ferret - I'm not headed for school either - course I am 35 but I still wish I had the dough to take the Western University's online :comp: Web Design program. It is 3 years to a Bachelor's 100% online which is great since nearest community college is 35 miles away and I would have to take night classes which would take me 10 years and they don't offer everything I need. The nearest University is Oregon State in Eugene (or is it U of O?) I dont know - anyway that is a good 200 miles away so no commute there. But the Western online program is only $70k - ppfft. I'll just mortgage the homestead. Anyway - any of you ever try the slimfast optima or the hi protein drink? I have to come up with a nice simple half assed balanced meal and snack to eat while I work so I dont have to stop to fix something. I am plateauing do to not following the 4 meals a day or more and not getting enough water and fiber. Bleh. Anyway - thoughts on those? do I need to doctor them with splenda? Hoping for less trouble than more. Yeah - what the heck is NIA? :?: |
I didn't know what Nia was either when I signed up for it. As far as I can tell so far it is a combo of jazz dance, african dance and martial arts. It's much less stressful than aerobics on my joints and on my psyche. Our regular teacher is out of town this week, so I'm reserving any real judgment until I see how she leads the class. Perhaps GoddessJessica can fill in whatever I don't know yet.
I wouldn't be in school right now if I didn't have funding and a tuition waiver. I actually wasn't going to take classes this semester at all, but my TAship, which is my primary source of income, requires me to be enrolled in 6 units. So I'm taking a bunch of fun stuff to keep my job and hopefully make me a more fit person. Most of my "real work," i.e.getting my paper finished, is done at home, on my butt, in front of the computer, so I'm glad to have the opportunity, really glad. |
i've tried the slimfast optima...i prefer it actually...very nice...
NIA sounds like it could be a lot of fun...hmm |
Nia sounds like a blast, I'd love to take some kind of dance class. :)
I'm enjoying the day off from work today. I've been wracking up too much leave at work, so I decided to take a four day weekend just for the heck of it. I stopped by the mall on the way back from running some errands and bought a pair of cords because most of my pants are baggy again. Looks like I'm firmly into size 10 now, yay :) |
NIA stands for Neuromuscular Integrative Action. It encompasses the martial arts, the healing arts, and dance arts. It's based on the idea that movement is medicine. I love it because it's expressive and non-repetative. Also, it's adaptable to almost every fitness level.
I'm an old student and I'll be in school forever but I love school so I don't care. :) |
Sounds cool! :)
Jessica, how is the CBF doing? |
Hi!
NIA sound right up my alley - non repetative - that is how I dance (erm Flail) anyway. Friday - going for groceries today - yeah :dz: trying to contain the excitement of it all. But it counts as 2hrs of walking including pushing the cart around which I count toward weight/resistance training. Get a couple cases of water on the bottom and a 20lb bag of cat food and I am good to go. :strong: Will be doing the WI tomorrow - had pizza, chicken patty and a corn dog for dinner last night (bleh) hopefully my exercise today will help undo that damage. :crossed: And I will drink extra water to flush it all out. Seems like I have still lost in the past even when having a bad meal or two in the week - as long as my cals for week are down and exercise is up (Still doing the daily rounds) so I am not too discouraged and if I dont lose or worse if I gain :yikes: - I will just have to do better next week - gotta make my goal!! Happy Friday - chat later!! |
