Alternachicks at the movies
I saw the Village today :) I won't give away any details, but will say that it really took me by surprise! LOVED IT! Highly recommended :)
I saw Secret Window on DVD. It was ok. I expected more from my Johnny. He was cute, and he did a great job, but the movie just lacked something. I think that I expected the ending, so when they sprung it at the end, it didn't take me by surprise. In fact, I think they assumed that everyone would be taken aback, saying they didn't see that coming, but it was so expected that it seemed overdone. I saw a lot of good previews at the movies, there will be a lot of good movies to discuss this fall :) In the meantime, go see the village!! |
Thanks for the tip, Suzanne! That one has definitely been on my "must see" list, so I appreciate the recommendation. I COMPLETELY agree about Secret Window! *yawn*
For a rental -- surprisingly -- I'd also recommend The Butterfly Effect. I'm not exactly gaga for Ashton, but I was pleased to find that movie interesting, pretty well-acted, and thought-provoking! It was not my pick, but I did like it after all! My sweetie just got a job as a District Manager for Hollywood Video, so I see some free rentals on my horizon! Now if we could just agree on what kind of movies to rent! :dizzy: (It's the age-old shoot-em-up flick vs. foreign gem w/subtitles argument...... ) |
odd one to look for on HBO
A couple of weeks ago I watched a film that went straight to video, although it did well at the Sundance Film Festival. I caught it either on HBO or on IFC.
Anyway, I was surprised that it was quite good. (Despite the surprising cast!) So, if you look at your movie listings and see "Wisegirls," starring Mira Sorvino and Mariah Carey, check it out for a little bit. You might be surprised too! This was before Mariah got panned for "Glitter." I thought she was a hoot in this film.... LLS |

Favorites include Happenstance and L'Auberge Espagnole. Do you have any to recommend? |
Great foreign gem: "Life in pink" or "La vie en rose"
Also, "The eighth day" or "Le Huitieme Jour" is really bizarre but good because its so bizarre, if that makes sense And if you haven't already seen Amelie, go do it!!! |
Interesting movie I watched last night called "Northfork" don't ask me what it's about, because I'm still not really sure. Even if it was sort of confusing, it was beautiful to look at and worth the watch for that reason alone. Very beautiful imagery, kind of reminded me a little bit of Dark city for some reason.
Worth checking out. Next I have St. John's Wort, from the makers of Ringu we shall see... |
Well I am going to see the highly intellectual film "Alien versus Predator" tonight
|
well, i started st johns wort and was going to watch it alone. i watched the first 10 seconds and saw lots of evil dolls and a guy that may or may not be a clown and turned it off. i think i will wait to watch it when my hubby is here.
especially since this morning i woke myself up screaming from a nightmare. *L* What a great way to start Friday the 13th *LOL* dolls and clowns scare the crap outta me. i will never ever see IT and I can't even stand to go down the doll aisle in a toy store. *shudder* icky. |
I'm with ya on the clowns and dolls. Ewwww. I especially dislike pierrot dolls, which seem to combine the WORST of both worlds!
On that note: Back in the 70s there was a movie of the week called "Trilogy of Terror." Three mini horror stories. Do you guys remember the one with the little warrior doll chasing Karen Black and screeching? If you go to the movie newsgroups or boards, I swear, everyone who ever saw that movie still freaks out about it! Check the video cover out at amazon or at imdb.com. One glimpse will give you the creepies. (The people's reviews sometimes have spoilers in them--so be careful reading if you intend to rent someday.) LLS |
I so freaking remember that. THe girl brings home some sort of fertility doll thingie and it goes "eee ee ee ee " and chases her into the bathroom and hacks through the door with a knife...
i saw that when i was like 10. it so stuck with me! |
 I remember that one too!
Alien v Predator wasn't too bad - a check your brain at the door - don't think about the holes in the plot type film :) |
I'm just going up to our cottage with a friend. My daughter suggested I take The Blair Witch Project! Geez, that movie FREAKED me out! She and I watched it together, and all I could think was, "This is just like the cottage!" :yikes:
|
eek! :fr:
|
If you liked Amelie, you should rent "He loves me, he loves me not." It's also with Audrey Tautou as the lead, but it has an interesting twist.
|
Watched "st Johns Wort" tonight in the safety of a lighted room with my hubby - and was disappointed. The only scary thing in it was the dolls. The plotline was crap, but the cinemetography almost made up for it completely. Interesting useage of filters angles and colours.

I really enjoyed "Chocolat" and "Like Water For Chocolate"...hmmm recurring theme here or what?
I loved "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" by director Pedro Almovadar - his film "Tie me up, Tie me down" and "High Heel" were good too. Another great film is "Brotherhood of the Wolf" which is originally a French film but you can get it dubbed in English. |
We made a huge mistake at the cottage this weekend, and rented "The Duplex". God, it was awful. Just awful. Sent our stress levels right through the roof.
Then we watched "Matchstick Man", which I really enjoyed. Oh... "Brotherhood of the Wolf" was good, Mauvais! |
This week we watched Spiderman 2 at the Imax. It was cool!
Secret Window - not all that great but I loved watching Johnny Depp. :D Whole Ten Yards - Very cute! It was pretty amusing. |
I just rented/watched Godsend yesterday, it was alright, but nothing I would suggest running out and renting. It was very predictable....
|
I have a movie night planned with my brother tomorrow night. Nothing new, just some old great favorites. "Monty Pythons In stearch of the holy grail", "Four Rooms", "Office Space" and one that he's seen but I never have "Murder by Death" and a new one for us both "Butterfly Effect"
I am not so sure about that last one, I have heard mixed opinions. Someone compared it to Donnie Darko which is one of my favorites, so I will try it and see what I think. I can't wait to have a nice quite movie night. Nice and relaxing... especially since the week after next I will be spending with in-laws on vacation. Not just a few - but ALL of them! hehe... Talk about murder by death. We'll see just how that goes. :) |
Me and hubby rented this movie called Spun. not only was it good, but the music was by Billy Corgan ( my all time fav. from Smashing Pumpkins) and he did a duet with Tori Amos in it. plus he had a cameo. one of the only times i have ever seen him in a movie. I think we watched it 3 times before we took it back.
|
I LOVE Murder by Death! It's hilarious!
Last night a friend and I saw Supersize Me. Very good. |
Office Space is hilarious. Did you ever see Swimming With Sharks - another great movie!
Murder by Death was great too. Weekend with ALL of your in-laws :yikes: sounds more like that Agatha Christie movie (Ten Little Indians? or was it called And Then There Were None?) where a group of people get together for a weekend at a mansion and they end up getting bumped off one by one  Dang- I'm sure ellis would know the right name of that movie! |
I can't remember the name of that one, but what about Clue? That was good. Except for the option of umpteen endings.
|
Not to mention the cheesy acting
I think it was Ten Little Indians but they did a remake and renamed it to be more politicaly correct. |
I LOVE Office Space!!! Kind of cathartic for DH, even though he isn't an office worker anymore!! (He spent almost 20 years doing that!!!)
|
den - that movie is in my top 10 list for sure. My brother and I wound up watching that during our movie night. I absolutely love the fax machine scene and i swear to you, the guy who is always stressed and then gets hit by a truck... that is my dad to a tee!!
|
Office work SUCKS, doesn't it? I love it when they are beating up the machine and the guy goes back for one last kick...HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
I ALSO love ANYTHING by Monty Python (EVEN Jabberwocky!!) |
I finally watched Kill Bill 2 - not bad. I can't say that it was one of my favourite movies ever (Volume 1 wasn't either) but I did enjoy them both.
