Empowered Woman Songs? Suggestions??

My sister is ACROSS the country and breaking up with her boyfriend, so I'm sending her a care package. I'd like to make a CD of "Empowering Girl Songs"

Any suggestions?

So, far I have:
"I will survive" (Gloria Gaynor or Cake)
"Independent Woman." (Destiny's Child)
And a bunch of Ani Difranco....

Jessica, I'm sorry about your sister... :(
I can't think of any songs off hand, but I'll keep it in mind.

goodbye earl, by the dixie chicks...can't be more empowering than that!

Hmmm...

"Sisters are doing it for themselves" -- Eurythmics
"That Don't Impress Me Much" -- Shania Twain
"Talkin' 'bout a Revolution" -- Tracy Chapman (I realize that it is not strictly about women but I tend to think of it as REALLY about women rising up)

Ani Difranco is amazing for making me feel powerful. I found a few links to lyrics that I feel are some great feel better songs in that situation.

"Gravel" is good. link is here:

"Fierce Flawless" this is possibly my favorite of all her songs

I hope that everything will be okay. How thoughtful to make a carepackage for her... She is very lucky to have someone in her life that cares that much. :)

Blessings

what about good old "You Oughta Know" by Alanis?

Bitter, yes. Poignant, indeed. Empowering, definitely.

How about something off the Celebrity Skin album by Hole or something by Garbage or Sarah McLachlan?

I'm not a big Shania Twain fan but that "I feel like a woman" song is light hearted and somewhat I am woman hear me roarish :)

Oh yeah...These Boots were made for Walking by Nancy Sinatra-empowering and fun to dance around the house to-yeah!

This isn't a song, but it kind of fits here. Got it in an email today.

The "Make Do" Woman

When I was preparing to get married, I started getting all sorts of advice especially at bridal showers and things like that from family and friends. But one of the most interesting "lessons" came from a woman I met for the first time, just a few weeks before the big day She said, "Honey, whatever you do, don't ever let yourself become a "make-do" woman" I had no idea what she meant, but, of course, she was about to explain.

She continued, "men" don't deny themselves anything. Whatever they want to buy, they buy. Whatever they want to do, they do. Meanwhile, there is the wife, making do with her hair not being done, her clothes from yesteryear, her nails in need, never had a pedicure, scraping the bottom of her tube of lipstick! Oh, I could go on and on with how "we" make do. And why?
Because the car needs fixing, this bill is behind, we have to use our time to take care of this, or take care of that; we're saving for this, working, cooking, cleaning, raising, etc." She warned me to never become a make-do woman, because she says if you start, it is hard to stop and one could easily find themselves making-do for the rest of their lives. I vowed it would never happen to me. I didn't think much more of the conversation until one day, I began to take notice, she was right. Men are a lot better at being good to themselves. Some call it being selfish, there has to be another word for it. Tell me if you know. Whatever you call it. It does have its place. When they want to play ball, or golf, or fish, they go! When they want to buy clothes, or equipment, or video games, or whatever their "thing" is, they buy! Have you ever tried to stop one? Has anyone ever been able to stop one? Let me know! When I look around, I see a whole heap of make-do women, married or not, with or without children, they are all over the place! I have decided that I am going to make my best effort to become a "make-time" woman! I will make the time to do what I need to do to be good to myself, whether that's a trip to the salon, or the gym or the mall.

This time I'm gonna take a lesson from the guys! All right ladies,
single and married... Let's NOT be "MAKE-DO" Women! Let's LOVE OURSELVES and ENCOURAGE each other!..... Pass it on!

It's something we could all appreciate.

As for songs, when I am angry I normally go for STP/Tool/Alice in Chains etc. Don't know too many empowering songs. Maybe Janis Joplin's version of "It ain't me, Babe"?

"Just a Little Girl" by Amy Stundt
"Ladyfingers" by Lucious Jackson
"Lucky" by Bif Naked (I think she's talking about woman-kind!)
"The Letter" by Macy Gray
"*****" by Meredith Brooks
"Zombie" by The Cranberries (cause she sounds so darn cool yelling like that!) :D

mauvaisroux 06-13-2003 09:48 AM

Yeah! Bif Naked - that song "I love myself today" is perfect - pissed off, empowered and moving on so screw you buddy!!!! :D

Especially when she sings "take another look at me now 'cause it's your last look for ever!" :s:

Darn-now that song is going to be stuck in my head all day

Goddess Jessica 06-13-2003 11:38 AM

I don't think I've ever heard that song.

What freaking great suggestions!

mauvaisroux 06-13-2003 11:42 AM
