Hi I am new here too! I can't seem to budge to a lower weight either. I drink a lemon water first thing in the morning then some black coffee and a poached egg on Avocado toast with sprouts or steel cut oats and strawberries. I have the healthy eating down for years, no soda, sugar or any processed foods, I eat pretty clean and love it!!! My problem is I do not get enough cardio. I live on a tiny island and there is no place to ride a bike or walk unless I just walk to the dock and back up the hill which I do often. I am renting from someone temporarily and planning to move to a healthier location in town. I guess when you hit the 50yo mark things change a lot. I am a widow 10 years now so I completely understand the dating horrors out there.
Old gringos looking for young hot chicks...lol!!! I don't look for a man anymore, I will let him find me. Its easier being single, no drama, no one to take care of or worry about. It might seem lonely but it isn't, I come and go as I please and do what I want, when I want....if he comes a long and we hit it off great...If I don't find anyone, I am not going to worry about it. I refuse to starve myself and work out like a demon to get a man...that's just me though and I am ok with it. I am a whole person I do not need another to complete me or any of that other non sense I read!!I am on my own journey to healthy living and being happy with just me!

Hello all pretty much new here. I have been reading posts here and there. Finally started a challenge. One of my problem is that i start work pretty early and if i dont eat something on the way to work then i might not get a chance to eat till closer to lunch. Poor excuse. So there I go stopping and having fast food for breakfast.
Lots of calorie .The rest of the day is not too bad but its that breakfast thing.ugh.
Been hearing a lot about protein drinks. Any suggestions ?
Thanks ladies.

Hi Leliu. Welcome to the thread. My opinion of your weight plateau is that it is not because of not having enough cardio, although it's great for your health, etc. but you may need to cut down on your calories now. I have lost all my weight with NO exercise because of joint issues (tears, strains, frozen shoulder). I have had to cut my calories/portions down. I found if I had too many grains/breads during the day, my weight stayed the same. If I reduce them, then the scale moves again for me. Just a suggestion you may want to try.

Hi Dina. Welcome to the 50+ thread. Do you have access to a microwave at work? I used to take Smart Ones breakfast meals to work. They have lots of different meals and I thought they were pretty tasty.

Hi Dina. Are you allowed to eat at work? I, too, work a really early shift but I often take "One Buns" (very thin organic buns) and a bit of tuna salad, or steamed eggs... sometimes a very small slice of cheese and make toasted cheese. Then of course I have a lot of cut up veggies and fruit. I eat both my breakfast and lunch at work. I eat almost no processed foods -- mostly organic and avoid GMOs and chemicals, fake sugar, etc. With just a bit of creativity you can have some very yummy food without that much effort.

Rennie I started out on this journey by accident. When we got back from vacay last June, my two gardens needed about 15-20 hours of weeding since I'm organic and don't use chemicals to control. So every morning id go out for 2-3 hours and back again in the evening for an hour or do. I did this for four days straight. I also had loads of cleaning to do. I started to notice my clothes fitting better and started weighing myself.....it was eight pounds or so less than when I went to doc right after vacay! That's when I got serious.

#1 - ditch the diet soda and anything else with artificial sweeteners in it. ... Ditch as much processed food as possible. Have good emergency food handy for when you get hangry and need a quick fix
#2 - high protein breakfast to keep me satisfied all morning
#3 - ditch the white bread and sparingly eat the whole grain/sourdough/pasta (of course I can't give it up totally, but I used to eat loads of it), I eat very little sugar but never did so it wasn't a sacrifice
#4 - keep my calories 600-700 for break/lunch total, then I can splurge within reason at dinner

#5 - splurge every couple of months on your favorite "bad" food.....for me it's fried chicken wings and sides loaded with buttery hot sauce

Realize that your weight goes up when you exercise a lot, Aunt Flo visits, you eat pasta/bread. Don't get discouraged when your weight loss stalls...just keep on truckin'!

I'm sure you know all this but it doesn't hurt to be reminded/encouraged once in awhile. I do better when I stay busy....less time to think about snacks!

Break - sausage mcmuffin
Lunch - Amy's bean/cheese burrito
Dinner - beef barbacoa quesadilla (copycat recipe) and black beans

Hi Prairie queen, Hi all,
I'm pretty new to this site. Had a few questions, what would any of you suggest for a high protein meal? What do you think about protein shakes?
One more question lol
What do you ladies think about diet green tea? Thanks I'm trying EVERYTHING and nothing seems to help me lose weight.

Hello, thank you for the welcome:carrot:
I do have a microwave at work and I would love to take a smart one meal. My question is that some people tell me not to have stuff like that because it has a lot of salt??? Is this true?
Also silly question here but when I'm replying here is it always proper of me to do the quote thing? Lol

Dina - Smart Ones have some of their frozen breakfasts marked to indicate less than 500 mg of sodium. I eat 2 slices of turkey bacon and an egg just about every day so I can limit my grain/bread intake. That's about 340 mg of sodium there, so I don't think < 500 mg is too bad and compared to fast food, it would be 10 times better. When it comes to breakfast, I love to have traditional breakfast dishes. ...... But I can always eat breakfast for dinner. :)

Katiam, yes i love breakfast for dinner too:spin:
Thanks for the info. I really need to get to market and start stocking up on the good and healthy stuff.

emaline29 06-06-2016 11:44 AM

Hi..I'm back after quite an absence.. I get very disheartened with trying to lose weight because every time I seem to be doing well my back pain will be very bad and it's a case of just making the most convenient or quickest thing to eat. I've lost and gained the same 5lbs so many times it's unreal!
Looking forward to reading all your posts and gleaning some info to help with getting things moving in the right direction again.
I am calorie counting and trying to keep my carbs as low as possible.. but I do love a bit of bread.. :?:

These are my goals for each day: Calories 1200 Carbs 60 SatFat 20 Protein 90 Sodium 1500 Fibre 20

katiam247 06-07-2016 09:49 AM

Welcome back emaline29! I know what you mean about having convenience foods while dealing with pain. I have had my share between my knees and ankles. Just think how convenient an bag of salad and cherry tomatoes with low fat dressing would be. Or a slice of deli ham (in the package) with a slice of low fat Swiss cheese rolled up a lettuce leaf with a touch of light mayo. Roasted veggies in the oven are kind of easy, too. Drizzle some olive oil and garlic on sliced zucchini, yellow squash and stick in an oven at 400 until they get a little brown. I drink V8 low sodium for one of my veggie servings. Fruit is really convenient, too. I cut my oranges so I don't have to peel them and apples are wash and eat. Strawberries with lite whipped topping (the frozen kind you thaw) is a delightful dessert.

My new bread love is Pepperidge Farms Light Whole Wheat. 2 slices is only 90 calories. They are pretty small, but better than cutting a regular whole wheat slice in half for a sandwich and it is still 100 calories. My carbs are not set as low as yours. I try to get around 120 or less. I do try to limit bread/grains but I enjoy beans which have lots of fiber, some protein and are higher in carbs than other veggies. I do refrain from white potatoes, white rice, and white bread and try to eat sweet potatoes, brown rice and whole wheat bread occasionally. This morning I took a break from eggs and turkey bacon and treated myself to rolled oatmeal zapped in the microwave. All I added was sugar free maple syrup and ICBINB spray.

Wannabehealthy 06-10-2016 11:22 AM

I haven't visited this thread in a while, and I realize I have been missing some very good discussions and tips!

Kat, I too have trouble with bread. My latest love is a bread I found in Target, of all places. It's called Little Big Bread, sprouted whole grain. It is 110 cals for 2 slices, very small thin slices, but has a chewiness to it rather than mushy white bread. I keep it in the freezer and it lasts me over a month since I only eat it occasionally.

I'm going to have to go back and read all the posts I've missed since I've been here. I need very badly to get back on my horse.

katiam247 06-11-2016 11:44 AM

Welcome back to the thread Carol Sue! I absolutely LOVE any kind of bread. Wish I didn't because it takes everything I have to resist it.

Took me a while to get back up on my horse (7 years), but so glad I did. Though, my horse has gone from a gallop to a trot to a walk now. I really have to watch my calories and I know this will be for the future too, if I don't want to go back the way I was. And I definitely don't want to. DH and I are considering tackling the State Fair this year at the end of September. He had a total knee replacement in January and I have so much more energy now, we think we can endure all the walking involved. It is quite a hike just from the parking lot to the entrance!

Wannabehealthy 06-15-2016 07:30 AM

It quieted down quickly here. I have had a very good past several days. My blood sugar has been great, and that's my way of knowing I have been good at watching my carbs. No major weight loss, though. I'm down a lb this morning, but I know from past experience that that can disappear so quickly!

Kat, we used to go to the County Fair every year and I enjoyed it. But both entrances involve walking up a pretty steep grade, and that's getting harder for me lately. I probably should consider it a challenge, but I don't want to be worn out before I get started. And I have to consider DH, too, as he is only in a bit better shape than I am. It it's hot and humid the way it can get in PA, that adds to the mix. We'll have to see. In years past I loved the carnival food, and that's not in my diet anymore. I doubt if they will have anything I can eat. It's not like they have a salad bar. LOL

Yesterday I exercised for 50 minutes. I need to make that a habit. How long do they say it takes to make a habit stick? 30 days or so? Thank God for air conditioning as I exercise indoors. The front shrubs need trimmed, so that will be a good workout in itself, but I'm hoping for a cooler, less humid day. DH cuts and I bundle up the clippings. When I worked full time I had the excuse of not having time to exercise. I really thought it was going to fit right in with retirement, but I can still find excuses. And now that I'm older I need it more than ever. I want to keep my mobility. Once it's gone, it's gone. I realize that some people need walkers or scooters due to medical issues, but I'm hoping to avoid that as long as I can. An hour out of my day is not a big price to pay.

OneTrickPony 06-15-2016 10:26 AM

Hi All!

This is my first post here. Late 50's and find myself the most overweight I've ever been. So discouraging. I'm having constant body issues because of this weight - mostly joint/muscle/tendon related. I've had enough. Low carb has worked well for me at times in my life, so giving this another shot. Even tho this is excruciatingly slow going this time. I'm determined to get to the other side and be able to MOVE freely again!

Off we go!!...........

PrairieQueen 06-15-2016 04:37 PM

Hi everyone! Carol Sue I'm going to have to try some of that bread next time I'm in Target esp. For hubs. Right now we cut a large slice of Aldi sourdough in half to make two slices for a total of 120 cal...not too bad. Also, good news with the blood sugar and the pound.....it all adds up.

I had way too many carbs on vacation and it definitely came back to haunt me on the scales. Today is the first day I feel normal after being back since last Thursday night. I have a few pounds to go to get back to
the before-holiday me. Hopefully it'll be gone by the end of the month....I'm trying!

katiam247 06-16-2016 09:38 AM

Carol Sue - Good job on sticking to plan and dropping a pound. I have a hard time, too, sticking with any regular exercise. The only regular thing DH and I do is go out shopping a few times a week. Last night we walked around Ollie's because we saw a few things in the flyer we wanted. On Monday's we usually grocery shop and the stores here are those huge all-in-one stop and shop grocery stores and we usually need items at both end of the store. What is really funny, there is always something I miss and I have to go back to the other side of the store to get it, so I feel I get a really good walk in just grocery shopping!

OneTrickPony - welcome to the thread. I was exactly like you before I started! I was getting tired of wearing casts, boots and braces on my ankles and knees. It is SO worth it to lose the weight to help out your joints. You can do it! Just keep the prize at the end in mind when eating.

PQ - congrats on getting back on track. That's what really counts!

Down to 153.0 this morning for me. The NSA ice cream was calling my name last night, but I opted for an NSA fudgesicle - about half the calories of the ice cream. I like to add some mini dark chocolate chips and chopped pecans to my NSA vanilla ice cream, which adds more calories. This morning I am going to try out my new copper skillet I bought at Ollie's and cook turkey bacon and egg. My Teflon pan was starting to get a little scratched and the egg was sticking. Funny how little things like a new skillet can get me excited!

PrairieQueen 06-17-2016 09:03 AM

Down another 0.2 lb this morn....I think the water weight is gone and now I'm dealing with actual fat gain from vacation (2-3 lbs over twelve days). I'm trying to be active at least two hours by gardening and cleaning the house. Yesterday it was only one hour.....couldn't do it, but today is a new day and my aches are mostly gone.

It's time for a checkup and blood work....it's been seven months. I'm hoping I can get off the bp meds or at least halve the dosage.

Have a great day!

Ok ladies I have a dumb question.
Some people are on protein diets, some watch this and that.
Whats everyone opinion?
Guess I'm having one of those days.

katiam247 06-20-2016 08:59 PM

Hi Dina - my plan is South Beach, mostly, but I really have to watch my calorie intake, too. It's mainly about portion size, whole grains, veggies, lean proteins and low fat dairy. There is a forum for South Beach and subforum that lists the foods and portions allowed if you are interested - look for Phase I Foods and Phase II foods posts. South Beach Forum/FAQ

Wannabehealthy 06-20-2016 09:19 PM

Dina, I think each person has to find the eating plan that works best for them. We are all different. Some people can't give up carbs altogether so they can't stick to low carb. Others get completely out of control if they eat any amount of carb. Some count calories, and it drives other people nuts. The best thing to do is read what each person has to say about their way of eating and decide which plan would fit your lifestyle. If you can't stick to a plan long term, it probably isn't best for you. Also, you can make your own plan, based on your likes and dislikes. Just be sure, there is no easy fix. You must work at it.

Wannabehealthy 06-20-2016 09:27 PM

Prairie Queen, the Little Big Bread in Target is not found in the bread aisle. Our Target has it on a table display in between the 2 dairy cases with some other misc baked goods. It's in a blue package.

Katiam, since we are retired, we try to shop at times when the stores are not crowded. When I go to Target or Walmart, I like to do a few laps all around the store, pushing my cart like a walker. Since it's not crowded I can go at a pretty good clip. I have seen some other people who seem to be doing the same thing.

love2b150 06-20-2016 10:12 PM

Well I have copied and pasted my coming back on two other threads ... funny I was the one that said we need to revamp this thread and then I disappeared. I'm sorry

I am restarting tomorrow with a new thought pattern and more focus ... see you then :)

katiam247 06-23-2016 07:21 AM

Welcome back, again, Rennie! Just take one day at a time. You can do it!

Carol Sue - I never thought about using Walmart or Target for walking, but I know there is a walking club that meets up at the mall to walk. I think they go early in the morning, too, to avoid the shoppers.

Hit a new low this morning - 152.2. I have been enjoying using my copper pan. It really is non-stick and easy to clean. I did read on some of the reviews, it's best not to use metal utensils which I don't because I have plastic that I use for my other Teflon pans. I even cooked pan fried pork loin chops in it with no oil or coating on my chops, just a rub I made. Turned out really good.

Hope everyone is doing great!

QuilterInVA 06-23-2016 08:50 AM

Carol Sue, low carb is not about giving up all carbs. There are carbs in fruit, vegetables and dairy and you can also incorporate carbs from whole grains in small amounts. It is very doable.

love2b150 06-23-2016 10:51 AM

Thanks Kat  Congratulations on the new low, WAY TO GO :carrot: I have a white ceramic pan that works like that. I love it :)

I'm preparing for my colonoscopy

Day 2 of liquids only, it's not too bad except when I smell food warming at work :) I'm having my broth now ... it's not bad. :) I dropped 2.9lbs thanks to only liquids and even though I know it won't stick it was really nice to see that 7 on the scale for a change ;) I am scheduled for my mammogram today.

06/21 ~ 181.8
06/22 ~ 182.2 (+0.4)
06/23 ~ 179.3 (-2.9)

mytime16 06-23-2016 03:52 PM

June 50+ starter

Hello everyone,
I, too, have been on a million diets over the course of my life. I lost 40lbs at age 14! And, though I have been successful on many, and made it to goal on a couple, being moderately overweight has been a lifelong battle. So, I am excited to be starting IP, and hoping for great things. I started with a friend of mine on 6/16/16, and my first weigh-in is tomorrow! I have found it easy to stay on, have not had many cravings, have not been hungry. The veggies are giving me fits, though, since I am not much of a veggie eater. I am experimenting a lot and have found lots of recipes here and on FB/Pinterest. So glad to journey with you all!

:trampo:

love2b150 06-23-2016 04:37 PM

Hi mytime16 :wel3fc: and to the thread :) Sounds like you're off to a great start with IP. I don't know anything about it other than what I have read on 3FC from the members so I'll just wish you lots of luck with a great weigh in tomorrow :)

PrairieQueen 06-24-2016 12:54 PM

Afternoon all!

Rennie you're a better woman than I am! I had a check up today and they got on me about scheduling a colonoscopy, but I declined this year. I so do not want to go through the prep, after what hubs went through. I know he's a man and whines more. I also know that you don't use Fleets now either, but I can't seem to do it. I will do my mammagram within the next two weeks and get my blood work done....easy peasy.

mytime16 06-24-2016 12:58 PM

Thanks, Rennie! Good news! I lost 11lbs and my friend lost 6lbs at our week 1 weigh-in today!!! It feels good to be moving in a negative direction!!! LOL.

Anyway, I am continuing to try recipes to help the veggie situation. For anyone that has a Wegmans grocery nearby, they have "riced" cauliflower and "spaghetti" zucchini and summer squash in their produce section where cut peppers are. I picked some up to try a few different ways. I am not a cauliflower fan at all, so I will need to hide that flavor : / I did make a roasted garlic dressing which has been my personal favorite of anything thus far. It is almost like an aoli made with garlic, oil, vinegar, and egg white. I like it on salads, meats, soups (used like sour cream). It does count as a fat, though, so it has to be limited.

Press on, people. We can do this! :cheer3::cheer3::cheer3:

love2b150 06-25-2016 11:22 AM

PrairieQueen, I had never had one and had no clue that I would go through all that I went through. I was hoping to get some insight from someone/anyone on here before hand but no one told their story. Thank goodness I won't have to do it for another 10 yrs. The nurse said everything looked good. The sedation is what has shocked me. I thought it would be a mild sedative but I slept the entire time, they woke me up 3 times. I got something to eat afterwards came home, laid down woke up at 10:30, got off the sofa, went to bed woke up at 9:30. I haven't slept that long in forever :/ ... I won't get the results from my mammogram for about a week. They are hoping to get the images that I got done in Virginia 5 years ago (I can't even remember where I did it and what insurance I had). So good luck with that one

mytime :congrat: 11lbs GONE is great :high: and good job to your friend also. I use the riced cauliflower, I get it from Trader Joe's. Green Giant also makes one in a bag now that you can use to make the mock potato salad. I use to go to Wegman's in Woodbridge. I love that store so clean :) Wow, I'll have to see if Trader Joe's has the zunoodles. I hear they are really good :) I get zucchini and squash from some gardeners that work with me. I have a batch already cooked up and I have a bunch more to cook. If you put the riced cauliflower with beef or chicken it takes on those flavors to me. Give it a shot :) Oh and do share your recipes, sounds like you're a little picky like me

PrairieQueen 06-26-2016 12:51 PM

Rennie I was going to go to TJs after my doc appt. but totally forgot because I had two other errands while I was in the area. Oh well...I'm headed back that way in two weeks. I'll have to look for some of those veggies.

love2b150 06-26-2016 01:34 PM

PrairieQueen I'm sure you'll make it to TJ's before me. Will you let me know if they have the zunoodles? I don't want to drive 40 minutes and they don't have them :) Thank you

Yep....my TJs is about 40 min. away as well. It was ten min from our old house.

Wannabehealthy 07-01-2016 07:56 AM

I can't make these subs because DH won't eat them. I have made cauliflower rice for myself, and I have a zoodler, but I can only do it for my lunch, so I don't really bother anymore. He only likes the real deal. I used to make the zucchini noodles or spaghetti squash with butter and parmesan cheese. Delish! But he won't even try it.

love2b150 07-01-2016 02:55 PM

PrairieQueen I didn't even see your message about passing TJ's and going back that way in two weeks sorry ... my message must have seemed really :dizzy: ... that's what I get for not refreshing my screen ;)

Carol Sue send me your zoodler :D

PrairieQueen 08-02-2016 07:03 PM

I'm here, but nothing new to add :( Maybe if my experiment gets the desired results....

love2b150 08-02-2016 07:29 PM

I've been reading bits and pieces ... are you trying to shake things up? I'm sure it will work. Years ago a friend here on 3FC calculated my calories and told me that on average I eat about 1600 calories a day. She told me I should try eating that way a couple of days a week on purpose and see if I could break my plateau and it worked. So prayerfully your experiment will work for you and you'll be on your way to 130 and lower soon
