Maary Like you, I'm discouraged at the amount of belly I have. I'm lots heavier, but the belly bothers me most. I don't see the back of me, so it bothers me less.

Understand your concern with DH in the attic!!! Glad he is down safe.

Lynn The lubricating shots I'm getting are different, they have only been out a few years. The name is EUFLEXXA, and it is injected the space in my knee joint, 1 injection a week for 3 weeks. see www.euflexxa.com

Mom had cortisone for her arthritis for years and landed up with brittle bones and one of her internal organs damaged. I'm scared of that stuff and only had 3 shots in my foot when planter faciacious wouldn't clear after couple of years. Hasn't bothered me since but I do the especial exercises for that often.

Carol Sue Elastic pants have to help. Also some clothing manufacturing companies are putting out jeans for "curvey" or Straight that may have larger waist. I have to get the "curvey" because waist is lots smaller than back end. Even then I sometimes need a belt.

Back to cleaning.

Sandy

Wannabehealthy 07-04-2015 09:28 AM

My weight is all in my belly, waist, abdomen and the 2 surgeries I had have weakened my abdominal muscles so there's no holding it in. I have little to no hips, thighs and buttocks. I can't even think about buying "curvy" jeans. If buy the ones that have the low waist they fit better because the waist line is bigger. DH told me that I look like a different person from the back. Then I turn around and you see this big belly. It doesn't help that I'm planning the typical 4th of July cookout today...hamburgers, hotdogs, bratwurst, potato salad, baked beans and cheesecake. I'll try not to eat to much of anything.

I could easily give up eating beef and pork, but poultry and fish and what I like the most. I eat eggs, too, but rarely any dairy. I like milk, but don't think of drinking it.

I have never had any injections for my knee. I don't get much pain unless I'm on my feet for a very long time. It justs gets stiff and doesn't bend very well. It helps if I wear an elastic brace but I only wear that when I'm exercising. I had 1 shot of cortisone in my elbow that has been bothering me lately, and I think I need another one. Sometimes the pain is so bad it nauseates me and my arm gets really weak and I can't lift even the smallest thing. I have to call for an appointment.

Good morning GG's,

We've got a few days off again (from kid sitting). Maddie and her family have a few days off and are doing some stuff together. Still always plenty of stuff to keep busy with though.

I have been doing puttery things today. Changed out stuff on my c-pap and made a calendar and place to list when I have done it, so I can remember for when it is due to be done again. Re-printed some of the recipes I have tried and liked. The first time around, one of the inks wasn't working and the pictures of the food came out funny looking. I like pictures with the recipes, if it has a yummy looking picture ~ it makes me want to try it. I want to put them in a notebook, the ones we have liked, so I can find them again easily (most have come from the internet).

Gotta get going and do my PT stretches. I had PT yesterday and like dummy, I hurt myself before I ever went. I bent over to get some things out of my backpack ~ should have picked it up and put it on a chair. Anyway after I put on my shoes, I stood up and my back hurt so bad ~ the only thing I could think of was bending over like that caused it. The PT lady felt on my spine and said I got something out of alignment. She did something to me to get it back in place ~ said I would be stiff for a couple days ~ she was right.

Also, gotta straighten up my sewing room. It looks like someone ransacked it. :o It kind of collects clutter ~ when I am straightening up some other place and can't decide what to do with an item, it ends up in there. The pile had gotten out of hand. I was looking for something and it all toppled over. I never did find the thing I was looking for, and now have to straighten it up. I really need to go through the stuff and toss and organize, but that will have to wait until Maddie goes back to school. Too hard to concentrate when there are lots of interuptions.

Might go see some fireworks tonight. The weather is predicted for 50% chance of rain, so not sure. Missed a free concert last night at a place near us ~ the Houston Symphony ~ patriotic music.

Lynn ~ you are doing well with your challenge thing. My little mess up cost me a couple pounds which is coming back off slowly. I just need to keep plugging along. I'm bound to make progress eventually. Your 4th of July greeting is cute.

Carol Sue ~ I think we should be able to enjoy the holidays and the special foods that come with it. Your idea to just eat a little of everything sounds like a good idea.

Sandy ~ glad those shots help your knees. The potted plants sound like a good solution when you can't get down on your knees.

Mary ~ I'm kind of like you with the meat. I eat a little, but mostly other stuff. And I guess when it comes right down to it, the other stuff wasn't enough of the healthy sutff.

Hope you all have a nice weekend.

love2garden 07-04-2015 01:03 PM

Gayle Sorry for the back pain. Glad you can do normal things without dear little Maddie who will be having fun with her parents. Same thing with my sewing room. Right now winter blankets are piled on my Sewing Machine, but I don't know where on earth to put them.

Carol Sue Elbow pain must be a real hard one. Hope you find a full solution for that issue.

We are certainly different from the backend. My large very, very strong legs do help me when I'm bending in semi squat to garden as I was today. Dug up a beautiful daylily that is creamy white and purple center. This year she failed to bloom at all. I suspected that too much dirt got piled on the lower crown when I added plants near by last summer.

Dug her up, kept the outside baby fans, and replanted on set in same hole and another few fans in another place that looked empty, near area now in sun after neighbor cut down her beautiful huge shade tree this week.

Lots of weeding and that before mentioned back end is screaming at me that I am an abuser!

Lynn Inviting lawn chairs, are you cooking, too?

Mary What are your plans for this 4th?

Our neighbor with big pool and lots of blow up toys in it will be having the rest of their families with grandkids, etc. Don't know if they can see any water for all the toys in the pool.

We are always invited, but those slender people don't realize the enormous amount of fatty and sugar filled foods are the very ones I must avoid. After the heavy gardening, I may take an early shower, put on PJ's and beg off with a truthful excuse, I'm hurting.

Happy 4th of July. Be safe. Sandy

Hi Gayle,

The challenges really help me. By posting my stats, it helps me to get to exercise & resist the "chews."

4th of July pic is from the Google heading for today.

Hi Sandy,

No, my cooking was yesterday. My DD is making turkey burgers for a late lunch/early dinner.

Wannabehealthy 07-05-2015 11:44 AM

Lynn, you are doing well with your challenge, losing, and getting your exercise in. For some reasons, challenges seem to stress me out and I do the opposite of what I should be doing.

I liked your pic of the chairs. We still have a few of those chairs and one is a rocker. DH has them stuck back in the basement, because they cannot be left outside. So we have those white stacking chairs for out on the porch. I like the old chairs. They are sturdy, and easy to get out of. When the guys go to the car cruises they all take chairs, and one time when DH took one of those folding chairs a young girl came over to their group, looked at DH's chair and said "My grandmother always had chairs like this." He would never take that chair again! LOL I guess at 72, he didn't like to be compared to the girls' grandmother. I hate those canvas folding chairs they have out now. Not comfortable to me, and hard to get out of.

I overate yesterday and didn't really enjoy it. I thought I would really like having a hamburger with a bun, but it didn't taste as good as I remember. I think I would have been happy with just the bratwurst. I'm back to lower carb again today, hoping that the 2 lbs I'm up is just water weight and will be gone soon.

Hi Carol Sue,

One of the benefits of aging is that we have learned what works for us & what doesn't. For me, a challenge - especially, when I am making my progress public - really works.

Wish I had progress, Last Monday I felt so hopeful, but this morning's weight was up almost 2 pounds. Grrrrr

This week will try to move more if the leg cramps will let me. Must have slept wrong. We sit up front in church and at times I was afraid the cramp would lock in and I'd jump up to try to stretch it out right when the sermon was on. Thank goodness, made it home, but it still aches.

Garden is absolutely beautiful!!! Mail Box garden has tall deep red daylily, 3 short red DL, 5 blooming yellow DL, white Sedum bloom, 3 pink Sedum bloom, Gold cone flowers. Some daylilies that bloomed in May/June will rebloom later. Oh Yes, Gold flowers on tips of St. John's Wort.

Back is gorgeous, too. Hate to leave it when the garden is at it's peak.

Hi Everyone,

Tomorrow will be 7 days on my Fiscal Year Challenge. Will change my tracker after I weigh in tomorrow morning.

Hope everyone has a good Monday.

Today is my bookclub meeting. We will be discussing Life Drawing: a Novel by Robin Black. I didn't like it, but sometimes our best discussions are about books we don't like.

After the bookclub, I am going to meet a friend from my graduate school days. We haven't seen each other for a couple of years. She is moving to Kentucky to become the VP of a University there. Looking forward to seeing her.

Hope we all have a happy & healthy day,

Lynn

glynne 07-07-2015 09:14 AM

Good morning GG's,

Been a busy few days. Maddie wasn't here, but we had lots to do anyway.

Our son visited on Saturday ~ always enjoy getting to spend time with him.

Finally ~ after months, got my new pair of glasses ordered.

Counting down the days until I can get that shingles shot, then get back on my RA meds. I have to be off the meds for 6 weeks before and 4 weeks after. At first it didn't seem to bad, but a couple weeks in, I am feeling the pains more. You do what you gotta do. I don't want to wish my life away, but just the same, will be glad when that time has passed.

We have a busy rest of the summer and fall ahead. Now that most of the medical stuff is behind us, DH has things planned to do and see.

Lynn ~ you're doing good with your challenge. Enjoy the visit with your friend.

Sandy ~ hope your legs feel better. Your gardens sound so pretty. I'm gonna have to google images of some of the flowers you mention ~ I am not familiar with them and want get a picture in my mind of what you are telling about.

Carol Sue ~ hope you are feeling better after your 4th of July splurge. Hope that couple pounds is gone now. Was Rusty bothered by the sound of fireworks?

My weight is kind of stalled/slowed down. My own fault ~ I've slipped a little on this new eating plan. Partly out of frustration because the progress kind of stopped, and partly ~ falling back into old habits ~ my way of dealing with frustration and stress. I have done pretty well at getting right back on track and the mini binge didn't turn into one that lasted days or weeks as it has in the past. I am hoping that once school starts back up, and my days aren't focused on Maddie, that I will make time for some exercise and hoping that will help.

Hi Mary. Hope all is well with you.

Hope you all have a good day.

Hi Gayle,

Thank you for the encouraging words. Kind of a bittersweet lunch with my friend. Most likely, last time I will see her. I cannot imagine going to KY for anything - have never been there in my 70 years.

Happy to be changing my ticker - down 2 lbs this week. Looking forward to at least 1 more lb down in Week 2.

Lynn

Wannabehealthy 07-07-2015 01:39 PM

Hello everyone. I lost the 2 lbs I gained over the 4th, and I know now that I will not do that again. I am used to not having a lot of carby foods and it didn't thrill me the way I thought it would.

Rusty surprised us, that the fireworks don't bother him at all. He was out on the porch with us while we were watching them and he actually fell asleep. He's not like that with everything. He barks and growls at the vacuum sweeper, and barks and growls and chases the weed whacker. Ever dog is different. We did have one other dog who used to bark at the vacuum.

Gayle, I think you did very well making the transition to Nutritarian eating. I think you will get back to it, especially since DH is following it too. Keep up the good work. Keep remembering, even if you aren't losing weight, your body is getting healtheir. I'm sorry you are having pain without your RA meds. I was not asked about any meds I was on when I received the shingles shot. At least I don't remember that. You will be very glad you got it. DH should get it to, if his doctor allows. Shingles is very nasty, especially for senior citizens.

Doing good, Lynne! Hope you have a nice visit with your friend.

Love2garden, I haven't had leg cramps in a long time, but had some recently. I'd be in trouble in church because the only way I can stop them is to stand on the cramped leg. It's not a fun thing. Hope you feel better.

Lynn, don't dance so hard.....I gained back one of those pounds! LOL

The past 2 days I haven't had as much arm/elbow pain. Two days ago I took an Aleve and it helped a bit, then at bedtime I took the Kelp which seems to help with the pain for some odd reason. Yesterday, no pain meds and only a bit of achiness, but I took the Kelp again at bedtime. I read somewhere that even though Aleve is an Nsaid, it is not shown to cause strokes the was IBprofen does. Don't know if it's true. I can live with the achiness the way it is today, but when the pain gets stronger it really slows me down. I do try to baby the right arm. I still haven't made a DR appointment. Just too many other things going on and the doctor appt doesn't seem like an emergency.

Hi Carol Sue,

I have always weighed myself every day. One of the things I learned is that my weight fluctuates every day. This is why I change my tracker only once a week. As long as my weekly weight is even or down, I am happy.

Lynn

love2garden 07-08-2015 07:04 PM

Lynn I usually weigh daily also, but count the end of the month as weight lost that month.

Carol Sue Alieve really, really is a help. Took two yesterday before driving lots of miles and again today with trip to gym and massage. Glad I did.

I've heard that Alieve's most dangerous side effect is that it thins the blood and can cause internal bleeding. My Doctor cautioned me not to use it continuously, so I save it for those times I really need it. Today my muscles say that this was a day that the med was needed.

Our trip to the mountains was such a good one. I drove, DH and Pat were great company. We went to Cranberry Glades in mountains of West Virginia. The bogs are so interesting, love going there but never had visited this time of year. With all the rain the ferns and Rhododendron shrubs were fantastic. Blooms were from dark pink buds but almost white blossoms. Royal Ferns were as tall as I am!

We visited Helen who has diner between home and the bogs. We usually have at least one meal at her place whenever we go in that direction.

Noticed today that most of the cereal type bars list sugar as the first ingredient. That means there is the most of it rather than oats, etc. I finally decided to get a Baby Ruth with the first ingredient a nutritious peanut. Lots of calories, but less sugar. Should have packed my lunch.

Sandy

Wannabehealthy 07-09-2015 08:36 AM

Lynn, I don't weigh every day. It's discouraging to me to see the fluctuations.

Sandy
, my cardiologist told me not to take Nsaids because they are known to increase the risk of strokes. That could be because of the blood thinning properties. He never mentioned Aleve specifically but I read online that it acts differently than IBprofen. I know you can't always believe what you read online. I only took 1 Aleve, although I saw that you can take 2 at first, as long as you don't take more than 3 in 24 hours. I think 2 would work better, but I'm being cautious. My step-children pop all kinds of pain pills with no regard to safety. It scares me. DH and I rarely take them.

I have never been one to eat cereal bars. There might be some protein bars that don't have much sugar in them.

I eat Nugo vanilla bars every morning before I exercise. They work well with my blood sugar. I order them online - 3 boxes at a time.

Lynn

love2garden 07-09-2015 10:46 AM

Lynn isn't it amazing how our weight fluctuates from day to day. I void, remove all night clothes then weigh. Last week I was down 2-1/2 pounds below what I was today. Grrrrr

Carol Sue Still smiling that Rusty was not spooked by fire works. He has come along quite nicely.

Alieve is still a NSID. Mom took Motrin for her really horrible arthritis for years after even more years on cortisone shots way too often. Her brittle bones and enlarged heart made breathing real challenge. At 5 ft tall, she became about 4ft 8 or 9 inches in the last week of her life when she fell and broke hip. Didn't survive. that was in 1984 but doesn't seem that long ago.

I try to eat organic fruits and veggies as much as possible. Those carrots are so much sweeter tasting. Usually don't eat candy but have been really craving it recently. Tried the 70% dark chocolate to eat just a bit daily, but it was so tempting I finished the entire bar by bedtime. I'll skip that one.

Mary, where are you?

Wannabehealthy 07-09-2015 11:27 AM

Here is the article I read that says that Aleve does not carry heart risks that other Nsaids do. I know that people can say anything on the internet so who knows if it's true? Maybe one of these days I'll ask a pharmacist.

http://heartdisease.about.com/od/car.../a/nsaids3.htm

glynne 07-09-2015 04:25 PM

Good afternoon GG's,

Another appointment out of the way (sleep clinic/C-pap). I'm good for another year. Will go to the podiatrist tomorrow ~ they have my new orthotics ready for me. Will be glad to have them as we will be doing some sight seeing next week and I'll be on my feet a lot. Got my new glasses ordered, so not too much longer and they will be ready. I have been without them for 7 months ~ used Dollar store reading glasses to get by until I could get a new pair made.

DH had his follow up with the cardiologist. The extra test they did to check his carotid arteries came back fine. Since he had the stent and the other things check out ok, the doctor thinks the chest discomfort he has sometimes is a hiatial hernia and wants him to see a gastroenterologist for an endoscope to check that out.

Little by little we're getting all this stuff taken care of.

Keeping busy with the (DH) cardiac rehab and (me) the PT for the sciatic pain (I really feel like it is helping).

I tried to make an appointment with the endocrinologist ~ now that all the parathyroid surgery and that stuff is over with ~ to resume with her to follow up on my labs and stuff. They told me that she is leaving the group she is with, but they wouldn't say where she was going ~ said they hadn't been told themselves. They said she was all booked up for now. I asked about getting an appoitnment if someone canceled ~ they said they don't keep any kind of waiting list of people to call if there is a cancelation. Grrrr ~ frustrating. Other doctors I have had who were leaving sent out a letter saying that if you wanted to stay with them, you could and they gave info on their new location and how to contact them, or they gave the names of other doctors you could choose. I really like her and would like to stay with her if I could, instead of having to start all over with someone else. They did give the name of a doctor who she is referring her patients to. Maybe she will send a letter, but just hasn't done it yet.

Getting the hang of this food preperation, when to fix, how much stuff to buy etc ~ so that it doesn't feel so overwhelming now. I have slipped a little a few times, but the more I eat this way, the better I feel and when I do slip, I find that I don't want to keep doing the wrong things, but want to get back to what is right and better for me.
That is major for me.

Sandy ~ glad you had a nice trip to the mountains ~ it sounds like a beautiful place.

Carol Sue ~ thank you for the article about the Aleve. I have felt like maybe I needed something sometimes ~ now that I am off my RA meds ~ to help me get by. I am taking Celebrex right now (the rheumatologist had me working on doing away with that med, but said I could take it while I am off the other meds waiting to get the shingles shot). Anyway, some days, it is like by the evening, I am hurting and so I thought maybe I could occasionally take a motrin to help. But after reading that article, maybe the Aleve would be a better choice.

About the shingles shot ~ I don't remember why I asked the lady about it in relation to my RA meds. Oh, thinking back now, I think I did ~ just to make sure ~ like I checked with her to see if it was ok to get the flu shot. I'm glad I did though. She said that because the shingles shot is a live virus, that the RA meds ~ because they weaken your immune system, you could end up getting the shingles. So I had to stop them 6 weeks prior to getting the shot and then have to wait another 4 weeks until after the shot before I can resume them. I'm part way there. I can resume my meds around the 2 week in September. DH got the shot already ~ right after he turned 60.

Glad that your elbow pain has been a little better and that the kelp seems to be helping.

Lynn ~ what part of Kentucky will your friend be going to? Just curious. My sister lives there and a friend I met ~ ironically here on 3FC. I have visited them. It is pretty ~ country though ~ they live in small towns. Your reason to go there I guess could be to see your friend. Maybe there would be something of interest where ever she is going.

Hi Mary ~ hope all is well with you.

I'd better get off here and get some stuff done. Hope you all have had a nice day.

Gayle, please hold off on the Aleve. There was a bulletin on the news yesterday, stating the the stroke dangers associated with Nsaids is worse than they previously thought, and they included Aleve in the bulletin. Like I said, anything can be said online and that info could be wrong. I think I am going to discuss this with a pharmacist before I take more. Since the pharmacists work primarily with the drugs, they sometimes know more detail about them than the doctors.

Your doctor may be relocating out of state and that's why she is referring her patients to another doctor. It seems unlikely that she would do that if she was continuing in another local practice. It is hard to change doctors after getting used to one.

love2garden 07-10-2015 05:01 PM

Carol Sue, Our TV station just emphasized the warning from the national drug about NASIDs. I had taken it several times this week for the ache in different body parts, but refrained today.

Alieve would help if that bad, cracked tooth that ached last week starts bothering me again before I can get to the dentist. With nerve dead I'll need to get it removed then an implant. There goes more $$$ and that hurts more than the tooth, but danger of infection is far more serious.

More rain, every time we try to go out. Thank goodness DH and I were able to do all the errands yesterday without getting soaked.

Scale up still more, but the rice for supper didn't help. I prefer whole grain Basmati rice but the restaurant only had white Jasmine. With the rain stopping walking or gardening outside, I'm simply gaining and not moving. Need to get the gumption to do what I can instead of complaining.

Mary, are you OK?

Hi Sandy,

Restaurant food - no matter what kind - ALWAYS makes me gain. I think they inject salt & sugar into everything they cook. I try to drink a lot of water on day after restaurant food.

lynn I noticed my fingers were sticky when a bit spilled, bet you are right they had sugar AND lots more salt than I normally use. Certainly enjoyed the wonderful unusual flavor. More water sounds like good advise.

CAROL SUE ARE YOU OK? 3 Tornadoes in your state sound ominous.
Prayers for you and all who are in danger from floods, storms, drought, etc.

Sandy, yesterday we had an absolutely beautiful day. Sunny all day, not a bit of rain. We haven't had many days like that this summer. So no tornados in our part of the state, at least.

Carol Sue Glad you and your area is OK. Lucky to get sunshine. I've almost forgotten what a blue sky looks like.

3 Catholic Churches combined for a picnic today at our Church. We went and met some nice people from the other two places. A few people we already knew. Lots of story telling and plenty of food. Rain held off, 82 deg was high, we had canopy and enjoyed the day.

Lynn, some of those pounds came off now that I'm eating at home. However, today's picnic won't do me any favor.

Gayle, Mary, hope you are OK.

Good afternoon GG's,

I'm ok Sandy ~ just been busy that's all. Thank you for asking.

Got to visit our son on Friday. Always enjoy that.

Talked to Mom a little, a couple of days. I miss some days ~ with Maddie here and stuff going on here and the time difference between here and there, it doesn't always work out to catch up with her ~ and when I can call ~ lots of times she is napping so I don't get to talk to her. It seems like a lot of times when I call now, she says she is tired and sounds it. I think she roams around at night and then is sleepy in the daytime. The doctor for the patients at the nursing home is working at trying to adjust her meds ~ so maybe that is the cause. I got her today, and she sounded pretty good and cheerful and didn't mention feeling tired, but she didn't want to stay on the phone long. I'll take what I can get. I miss how it used to be.

Sandy ~ glad you enjoyed a nice day ~ gathering and picnic ~ sounds like fun.

Carol Sue ~ glad you had a beautiful sunny day on Saturday.

Lynn ~ how are you doing? Hope you are having a nice weekend.

Hi Mary ~ Hope you are having a nice weekend as well.

I still need to do some of the stretches from PT. I was bad ~ I only did a few of them yesterday. I can tell when I don't ~ I get to hurting more. The hurt is better when I do them as I am supposed to, so I'd better get on the ball.

Take care all
