Gayle, my head is spinning from the instructions you gave DeeLou about the picture. I have my pic in my profile but I don't really remember how I did it. LOL I am not too good on this tech stuff.

It was only 1 degree when I got up this morning. It snowed lightly most of the day yesterday and the roads were terrible. W PA is hilly. We live on a level section of the road and they don't always clear the snow from the level sections, but if we go a block away there are hills and they are good at clearing the hilly sections. But I'm not going out in the cold today unless I have to. DH usually wants to go somewhere. He gets cabin fever. We grew up in this weather and are used to it. We used to get many snowfalls, up to a foot or more, but our weather has been changing and we rarely get more than a few inches. Just enough to cause havoc on the roads. Recently my eyes have been very sensitive to the sun so I really prefer dreary weather to sunny weather. My step-daughter thinks I'm nuts! She get so depressed when the sun isn't shining.

Mary, my Kindle came yesterday. I charged it and got everything all set up. I downloaded a novel from the library to be sure I knew how to do that, and I downloaded several free cookbooks from Amazon. That was the main reason I wanted it. I started reading the novel on it this morning and it's easy to operate and easy to read. I'm happy with it. When I went into my Amazon account this morning I noticed that the sale is over and the price is back up, so I'm happy I go in under the wire and saved a few dollars. I also ordered an after-market case for it. It fits perfectly in the case, the case closed magnetically, and puts the Kindle in sleep mode when it's closed. I am very happy with that, too.

I took my own stitches out one time because the doctor never told me to make an appointment to have it done. It was laproscopic surgery and only a couple stitches. And one time DH took stitches out for his son when he cut his chin. When I had my bowel surgery I went to the doctor to have the staples removed but when I got home I noticed there was one left, inside my belly button! I called, and they said it could stay there until my next appointment.

Deelou, there is a Fitbit that is only $59. It doesn't have the feature to monitor your sleep, but mine does that and I never use it. Prices might very well go down. I don't think they are any more accurate than a regular pedometer, but there is a lot of information provided when you have it synced to the computer and it also syncs to a smart phone, which I have never done. Remember, you're getting just as much exercise not using it...it just tells you how much you actually did, in case you might want to increase. It's just another unnecessary gadget, and I like gadgets.

Happy Birthday Mary ~ hope you are having a wonderful day.

Didn't know it was your birthday, Mary! Happy Birthday!

love2garden 02-16-2015 12:05 PM

Happy Birthday Mary

Glad you got your Kindle and are satisfied with it.

I still prefer to read a book, and the glare from screen gets to me after a while. I have a comfortable office chair at computer (I brought home my very good one from the office when I retired.)

Snow storming here, and DH and DD took off in single digit weather to get groceries we didn't get because we stayed home from Church yesterday. I can't breath when weather is so cold, so I'm delighted to be home where it is warm.

I shut down some of the events at Church that I could decide on, and we had 100 people to call. All is completed and I can relax and watch more snow come down.

When I called my youngest daughter who is in heavier snow area and asked if she can stay home, she replied "I'm sick with Migraine and going nowhere."

I replied "Good" then had to add that I'm glad she is safe in her apartment.
"Thanks, Mom." she replied sarcastically.

Happy birthday Mary. I played around for another number of minutes and must've done something to delete the picture. I forth on lots of sites and this is the most difficult of any so I will just leave it alone from now on out...😉

Deelou 02-16-2015 01:15 PM

Ok I give up.... I will "TRY" to delete all my info and maybe come back...it still is messed up😰😰😰😰bye for now

Deelou 02-16-2015 01:20 PM

WARNING.....you cannot delete your file according to what I read on stickeys... Since every time I want to post I see this huge picture of my family which I tried probably over two hours now of time to get rid of and I have to expand to find the post reply, and they won't let me delete my profile I'm just leaving and won't come back it's been fun....

Hope you are having a good Monday! It's a beautiful day here, sun shining. Guess it got to 65 degrees yesterday. Not sure what it is now but it is very nice...if you are moving around, no need for a jacket. Our son has been washing his car and now is cutting up some branches for his dad. We went out for a few groceries. Our youngest son is here for a job interview. Just happened to come yesterday on my birthday, so was really special. My oldest son ordered what should be a really good knife for me. Did I tell you I ordered a breadmaker for my own gift? Can't wait to get them both! We ate out after church yesterday at Olive Garden. I was kinda disappointed that the dish I usually like wasn't as good at this particular restaurant but the dessert and company was great. ;) My dish was kinda of mushy so brought it home thinking dh might be able to eat it. It was flavorful but they just put too much sauce on it for me this time. I tend to like things simpler and drier.
Last night we just snacked as usual on Sun eve. I snacked on sunflower seeds and frozen fruit all evening and my weight AND BS were both down this morning! My bs was still a high but MUCH better than it's been.

Thank you for all the birthday wishes! I can't believe I am so old..72 but I feel very blessed.

Love2garden! Glad to hear from you again. I'm sorry for all you who are in such cold weather still. I would not like that. Daughters can be frustrating sometimes, can't they? But we still love them.

Deelou, can you just delete your signature? I agree with Glynne that that appears to be the problem. Not sure how that happened though.

Well our son is home from all his interviews to want to hear how it went. Take care everyone..

Good evening GG's,

It was a rainy dreary day here today. Got cold this evening ~ down to 39*. Brrrr.

Sara and Maddie stopped by for a visit late afternoon. Maddie got a hair cut ~ she looks cute.

I busied myself with puttery stuff today. Redid a little pillow case. Mended a pair of pants for Sara.

I have been eating better. I spent time ~ after I made notes from the messages from my friend Margaret ~ making a list of possible things I could eat that would fit in with her guidelines. I eat stuff for a while, then get tired of it and kind of forget about it. So, this list had a bunch of stuff like that on it ~ that I used to fix, but had forgotten about. :dizzy:

I am still struggling with making myself exercise. The other day, I didn't exercise, and I didn't do much of anything else either. I guess I was waiting for the mood to hit me ~ trouble is ~ it never does. :( Exercise doesn't come naturally to me ~ I have to make myself do it. I wish it wasn't that way, and don't know why it is that way. But it is what it is I guess. I do seem to be more thinking about and wanting to do it when it is sunny out. Today, I felt like ~ I didn't want to just sit around and do nothing. So I did the puttery stuff. I felt like it was better to do something, than to do nothing because I hadn't done the exercise.

Deelou ~ I wondered if one of the moderators could help you with your picture problem. Or is there someone in your family who could help you? I just read your most recent post ~ please don't just leave and not come back.

I'm sorry Carol Sue that my instructions were confusing. I don't know what I'm doing so much either. What I can do, I have learned with the help of others.

Mary ~ it doesn't seem like you are 72 ~ you seem young at heart. Has your breadmaker come yet? We used to have one then it died. I got another one, but it didn't like it as well. I would be in trouble if we had one ~ that fresh bread and butter ~ oooooo ~ yummm

Love2garden ~ hope you are surviving the cold weather ok.

Wannabehealthy 02-17-2015 09:55 AM

I just added a pic to my signature, then went back in and deleted it. I sent a PM to Deelou of how I did it so I hope she tries it and it works. I know what it's like to be frustrated trying to do some seemingly easy task and not being able to figure it out.

I just realized last night that I have not had any bedtime dizzy spell for several days. I don't know of anything I'm doing different. A couple nights ago I was having some irregular heart beats, but I took some Kelp and haven't had any since. I don't remember to take it every day. I'm still having the itching skin, which I am blaming on my psoriasis, and the inside of my ears gets itchy. I'm still having the pain in my elbow at night, and also painful hands. That's another thing that comes and goes. As far as I know, none of this is life threatening. The itchy skin could be, but since I have psoriasis that is sometimes severe, I assume that's what's causing it.

Gayle, sometimes instructions sound confusing to me, but if I go back and do them step by step then they work. I just don't know a lot of the technical terminology. When I was setting up my new Kindle I was having all kinds of problems, so I set it aside and came back to it a couple hours later. A lightbulb came on, and it all worked out so easily.

Exercise is a struggle for me, too. I haven't done any the past couple days. I'm blaming it on the cold. Even though there is a furnace vent in my exercise room, it is not insulated and is always colder than it is upstairs in our living space. I hate the thought of going down there, even though I KNOW that once I get moving I will appreciate the cooler temp. I think I will put a thermometer down there to see exactly how cold it is. I think most people have to push themselves to exercise. Only a few look forward to it. But once you get into the habit of doing it on a regular basis it become as natural as brushing your teeth every morning. There are some who have to consider the weather and road conditions if they go to a gym or do their exercise outside, or have a lot to do and have to find the time to fit it in, but I have no excuse as all I have to do is walk down a flight of stairs and it's all there, and being retired, I have all the time in the world. I better get back to it before I'm in such bad shape that I can't do it.

Mary, I'm glad you enjoyed your birthday. My DH is about 6 weeks older than you. You seem to be in good health and physical condition. It's probably because you are so active, and your daily devotions each morning probably help, too.

I have a bread machine somewhere. It's probably in the attic. I bought it at a flea market, still new in the box. I used it twice. I am afraid to get it out and use it because bread is really my weakness when it comes to watching my carbs. It's hard for me to stop at one slice. I think if I would find a healthy recipe for a lower carb bread I would get it out and try it. DH doesn't eat much bread, so it would be all for me. LOL

Hope your son had a good interview!

maryea 02-17-2015 03:50 PM

Deelou - I am having trouble with my computer. I have to scroll way sideways to read posts. I haven't taken time to fix it yet. Anyway I just reread your post and realized what you said. Please don't leave us because of that picture. I'm sure you'll figure it out in time. I know if it somehow became your sig by mistake you can eliminate a sig. So look again. I hope the instructions wannabe will help you.As Wannabe said it sometimes just take a while to figure things out, but look again with fresh eyes (even again!) and try again. Or just let it go for a while and try later. It doesn't bother us that much. We love having you here.

Wannabe - you really sound so much like me! Glad the dizziness has been relieved and hope you'll find an answer or relief from all the pain somehow. I'm like you many of my symptoms come and go but it seems more now they are persist. The dizziness is one that comes and go, I also now hear my heartbeat in my right ear, kinda seems to go with the dizziness. I will tell my doctor next appt. I started taking more magnesium and I notice I don't have the cramping. Whether it is due to the magnesium or just that it's gone for a while only time will tell. I could not exercise at home...I will do it sporadically but not consistently. Going to the gym makes me exercise. And when you are over 65, a lot of insurance companies will give you free gym membership.
There are usually senior classes that will allow you to workout at your own pace plus the exercises are often tweaked a bit to make them easier for older people.

The reason I got my bread machine is to hopefully make lo-carb bread. I have the ingredients so am just waiting for the machine. If I do not like what it produces I will take it back right away. My problem is I don't know where I'm going to keep it, my kitchen counters are so crowded already! This is the one I am getting: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/stor...tegoryId=12111
The recipes I plan to try are in the low carb recipe book that I think you also have. Whether we will like them or not I don't know. I usually eat Sara Less 45 cal whole wheat bread. I like the small slices (breadmaker will make big slices I think) and since they are low cal, they are also lower carb.

The interviews seem to go well for my son but who knows really. They will let him know hopefully one way or the other. He has always wanted to move back here. Ended up in AZ only because that's where his first wife's family was. His current wife wants to move up here.

Well need to get to work. I was really hurting this morning and stayed in bed a long time. Dh went to his retiree club. He has a doctor's appt this afternoon for his finger. I am trying to decide whether I will go with him or not. I am not really needed other than this is the first appt with our primary doc since his lung surgery and he doesn't remember things so well. I'm sure the doctor has his reports though by now.

maryea 02-17-2015 08:51 PM

Got home from doctor's office and Costco shopping. Didn't have much to buy at Costco so that didn't take long but we did get gas. Gas prices are rapidly going up now. I have a feeling they will perhaps end up even higher than before. :^:

The doctor appt was to have him look at dh's finger. We didn't feel it was needed and we monitor the healing daily, but ER doctor wanted us to have it checked so we went in. While there we also wanted to mention about the dizziness dh is having. He got dizzy when we were called in...perhaps got up too fast, leaned down to remove his shoes for weighing etc, and was dizzy from then on. His pulse was 130+ too! So they reviewed his meds and changed reduced his BP med. That took all the time so didn't look at his finger at all. Now all this was understandable, and we were not upset at all because we didn't feel it was needed (looking at his finger) anyway but the doctor didn't even mention it and didn't apologize or explain (even though we knew) about not looking at it. He simply was not very polite and in our opinion a little rude. I know he was busy but he is too often this way these days. You know the very first thing he said to us?......did you get new insurance?!! Remember it was because of him/his clinic we had to get the advantage program as they (and others in our area) will no longer take just medicare and tricare. We understood all that and sympathized about their low payments but just feel it was rude to begin the visit with that. Apparently the receptionist had failed to ask for the card and so it wasn't in the record. I think we are going to complete this BP issue with him and then look for another more polite doctor. This was just the tip of the iceburg...we have been thinking about changing for about year or more, but because of the medicare/tricare issue didn't make the move. Now that we have the Advantage program, that isn't an issue. I like him as a person but am rather but no long for a doctor. Just hope we can find a better one...how does one know other than trying them out for a while and reading reviews online:?: At one time I actually gave him a very good review online. I notice his overall review is good right now but not excellent.

This has been a rather sad day for me...as some family issues came up that bothered me. Praying for all concerned and just feel sad and hurt by it all. It's just two kids but it affects us too. I remember a book called Where Can a Mother Go to Resign....of course there is no place but you'd think they'd spare you after awhile. Dh and I are too old for this.

Wannabehealthy 02-18-2015 07:25 AM

Mary, I will pray for you and your DH, too. Family issues can really bring you down.

I have been going to the same family doctor for over 20 years now. I originally went to him because he had evening hours and that was a plus when I was working. I didn't have to take time off work for an appointment. I have never had a problem with him, but there was a period of time when he was having a rapid turnover in his staff, and I had a lot of problems with them. I would call for an appointment and when I got there my name was not on the list. I called for an Rx and when I got to the pharmacy, it was not there. They had another patient whose first and last name were the same as mine except for the last letter of the last name. Due to privacy laws, I found this out by accident...they didn't tell me. I found out that they kept getting us mixed up. The girl at my cardiologist told me that when she asked for a referral, it came in the name of the other patient. When she called the family doctor to tell them of the error, they argued with her about it. I was ready to find another doctor, but eventually, they eliminated that problem by verifying date of birth for everything. Most medical places do that now, anyway. One thing I like about this doctor is when you have an appointment you don't have to sit in the waiting room for more than a few minutes. When DH has an appointment I always go with him because he doesn't listen when the doctor talks and never remembers what he said. One time the doctor asked me why I don't bring DH for my appointments. I told him that DH will tell him things that he doesn't need to know. He laughed at that. LOL

My insurance pays for a gym membership, but I never went because I have what I need at home. There are 4 gyms in our town! The one our insurance pays for is the farthest from us. DH exercises on my equipment, too.

That is a very nice bread machine, Mary! I hope it works out for you. I just saw that cookbook yesterday as I was going through mine hoping to donate some to the library. I have too many. I will look at it and see how that recipe looks. Sourdough bread is supposed to be good for diabetics. I bought some once and it was too sour for my taste, but they have it at a local restaurant and theirs is good. I also buy that Sara Lee 45 cal bread, but I get the multigrain. They were out of it this last time and I got a similar one we have around here, Nickles 35. I too like the small thin slices. I keep mine in the freezer because DH only eats white bread.

Hello to Gayle and Love2garden! Deelou, I hope you got your picture problem figured out.

glynne 02-18-2015 11:50 AM

Good morning GG's,

It is a nice sunny day, but a little on the chilly side for Houston.

Had the follow up appointment with the ENT Dr. so she could tell me the results of the parathyroid scan. It did not show the information she needs to do the surgery, so she is sending me to a place downtown for a 4D CT scan ~ so she can know which parathyroid gland is the one causing the problem. After that the surgery. She recommends removing the left thyroid ~ because of the nodules which are on it ~ which are little by little getting bigger. She said this is worrisome. And even though the biopsy said it was benign, she said that isn't always 100% accurate. So, remove the thyroid with the nodules, and the trouble making parathyroid. She said while I am still under anesthesia, a tissue sample would be sent to pathology for a quick check to say rather those nodules are cancerous and rather anything else needs to be removed at that time. She said that even if that one shows no cancer, it is possible that when they do a thorough exam, it might show something not seen on the quick exam and then I would have to have a second surgery. I am hoping and praying that all the testing still shows it to be benign and that a second surgery or other stuff won't be necessary.

Carol Sue ~ I'm glad your Dr's office got the two names straightened out. That kind of mix up isn't good.

Mary ~ has your bread maker come yet? I'm sorry about the heart ache your kids are causing you. I can identify. My two daughters don't get along with my son. The one daughter who is uppity, looks down her nose at him and acts if he barely exists. They were never close, so he has come to accept that. The other daughter ~ son and her were close and like friends. But she wasn't nice to him a lot of the time and he finally had enough. Like one of those little quotes you see about a person putting up with crap from someone else and when they finally say ~ enough ~ they are considered the bad one instead of the person that treats them badly. They had a falling out once before, but it blew over and they were friends again. This time, I'm not sure (unless God fixes it) that they will ever get along again ~ there was too much hurt. It makes your heart ache.
About your dr ~ why wait? If you are unhappy with him ~ change now. Another dr with a better attitude who is polite to you, would be just as capable of figuring out the blood pressure thing. You guys shouldn't have to put up with being treated that way. I'm sorry to be so bold ~ rude doctors played a big part in not liking my job and being glad to be done with it.

Hello Love2garden and Deelou.
