Some Helpful Hints . . .

Just thought I'd post a link to a good little article from the current issue of the D:Life Bulletin that I receive every week. D:Life is basically for Diabetics, but there is no "rule" that says everybody can't benefit from some of the information.

This article is about making healthier substitutions that will lower both the carb content and calories of some old favourites . . .
http://www.dlife.com/dLife/do/ShowCo...thy_swaps.html . . .

Hope you enjoy the information . . . and hope that you will feel free to post other helpful information in this thread from time to time . . .

Have a great moving and shaking day, everybody . . . :carrot:

Hi Linda!

I checked for the link and it said "Page not Found". Could you check it again? I'd really like to read that article! Thanks!

Cheryl

Woke up this morning to find this little gem waiting in my e:mail and thought I would share it with you all . . .

It's called "The Snack Food Hall of Shame". Very enlightening information about some of those wonderful things we all wish we could eat . . . but the thing I liked the most was the alternative recipe links . . . some of them sound really, good.

Enjoy . . . :carrot:

PS -- thought I'd turn this into STICKY so it would be handy for future reference. We can all add to it from time to time, when we come across something valuable.

Here's a list of 100 ways to cut 100 calories from Prevention Magazine's on-line newsletter. Not really a lot of new information in here, but handy to have it all together in one place, just the same.

Hope the day is treating you well . . . :carrot:

Another source of interesting information to which I belong is called 50Plus . . . they have picked up on the article in the June issue of Consumer Reports which has ranked the top Diet Plans and Diet Books . . . here is a link to the article on 50Plus . . .

http://www.50plus.com/display.cfm?li...cumentID=18263

BTW . . . as mentioned in the article and specified in the original Consumer Reports article . . . what determined whether an item was in the Plans Section or the Books Section was the depth of the research behind the plan/book . . . Plans are backed up by a plethora of verifiable research and clinical trials . . . Books are not, although the information in them is considered to be nutritionally sound.

After giving the actual rankings, the article goes on to list general diet related information that was also included in the Consumer Reports review.

Enjoy . . . :carrot:

Thought you might like to read this article about Sleep Disorders . . . http://www.everydayhealth.com/public...9-24f31b1fd806 . . .

Unfortunately some sleep problems are much more common for those of us who are carrying too much weight -- especially if that weight is abdominal.

Have a good day (and a restful night) . . . :carrot:

Wow . . . I just discovered a terrific new (to me) website for those of us who have 'reached that certain age group' . . . lots of great information . . . I especially like all the hints about fitness, but the entire site looks good. Hope everybody finds something of interest on there.

Here's a good article about the importance of Milk in weight loss . . . http://www.foodfit.com/centers/hwc/r...rinkmilk_1.asp . . . one of the things that caught my attention was the mention that calcium supplements just don't seem to have the same benefits for weight-loss.

Here's that great article that Theresa (LittleRed) posted for us . . .

If you can't remember the last time you got a vaccine, call your doctor now.
On a mid-August morning two summers ago, Debbie Twenge started coughing. Just a cold, thought the resident of Dundee, OR, now 56. But the body-racking cough got worse--much worse. Over the next 6 weeks, Twenge had to make two trips to the emergency room. One particularly frightening evening, her daughter called 911 when Twenge's throat closed up during a coughing fit. "I thought I was going to die," she recalls.

By the end of September, her doctor was suggesting tranquilizers--"as if I was just a nervous female," Twenge says with outrage. That's when her husband read about a local outbreak of whooping cough, aka pertussis. A test quickly revealed she had it, but it took 6 months for her to recover from the lingering inflammation and injury to her breathing passages.

So it was with great interest that Twenge recently learned that the CDC now recommends all adults get a booster shot to protect themselves against this "childhood" disease. Health officials estimate that the vaccine could prevent more than 8,000 adult infections and 30 to 40 deaths each year. "If I had known what pertussis was like, I would have jumped at the chance to be vaccinated," says Twenge.

Chances are, when you hit adulthood, you figured that you were pretty much done with vaccines, except for the occasional flu shot. But it's time to roll up your sleeve. Experts say the right vaccines can prevent pain and misery--and could even save your life.

Still hesitant? Worried about side effects? Don't be. Here's the lowdown on the shots you need and when--and why you want them.

Thought I'd put that Calcium/Vitamin D article in here too for future reference. Unfotunately, we are 'at that certain age' when thoughs of Osteoporosis cannot help but come to us occasionally.
