Any aficionados of Japanese food out there? We're going to a Japanese restaurant tonight to celebrate my youngest BIL's birthday. I LOVE sushi, tempura, and udon noodles, but they, unfortunately, are not SBD friendly. I've never tried the soba (wheat) noodles before...I suppose I could try those. I know that sashimi is allowed b/c there's no rice, but I don't really care much for it. Otherwise, I'm kind of at a loss. Any ideas?
Is it a teppanyaki-style restaurant or more sushi oriented? Either way, there are plenty of other things you can go with, lots of veg and meats. The miso soup is good, and the tossed salad with that LOVELY ginger dressing is good, too. The last time I went I ordered the appetizer Horenso Goma & Mozuku (spinach with sesame dressing).
For meat you can try the Yakitori (grilled chicken and/or veg on a skewer) and the grilled red meat wrapped around scallions on a skewer; Sukiyaki (beef with veg) but this is usually for more than one person.
Veggies: see if they have any of these
Kyrui Su (Japanese Cucumber Salad)
Chikuzen-Ni (veggies simmered in soy sauce)
Yaki-Nasu - grilled eggplant
Edemame - soy beans
Ingen Goma-Ae - green beans with sesame

Shabu Shabu is a excellent Sobe dish. It is a big boiling pot of water that you add veggies and thinly slice raw beef to cook. Some Japanese restaurants serve it. Others don't, so you'll need to ask.
Bless you, broad! I will look for those, especially the grilled eggplant. Mmm. They sound delicious! This particular restaurant does have a lot more than sushi...if that's what teppanyaki means... I do like miso soup and the ginger dressing with salad. I wish I could find a dressing like that at the grocery store... I'd even settle for making it myself if I could find a recipe.
Goddess, I love shabu shabu, too, but the only restaurant around here that served it just went out of business.
