Default help me get started

I am 52 years old and almost as many pounds overweight as I am old. I have tried many diets but have very little will power and seem to be hungry all of the time. Can anyone tell me how many calories it takes to maintain a pound of body weight? I am kind of hoping a different approach, maybe choosing a diet plan that maintains the weight I should be. Eventually, it would seem I would arrive at my goal weight. How far off track am I???
