Are Levi Jeans vanity sized? What other clothing brands are vanity sized.
I fit into a size 12 505 jeans today, and I wonder if I am the same size 12 as when I was on the weight gain train up? I dont think I measured myself and weighed myself for later comparison at that time.
I"m sewer and there is a website called fashion incubator on which the author who is from inside industry and gives lots and lots of information to people starting in the fashion industry says that this vanity sizing is largely a myth, pardon the pun.
But she does explain why the fit of clothes made in asia is so bad these days. Its too complicated for me to try to repeat so you will have to go chase it up yourself if you are interested.
I admit i was quite convinced by her arguments. She is definitely serious and upfront about her information and gives people an awful lot of help so i can't see why she would have anything to gain from misleading people. she herself was a pattern cutter i think and worked in the industry for many years and seems to keep up with things.
I don't know that vanity sizing is real, but I really wish there was an industry-wide standard. I hate how I can wear smaller sizes in certain brands and larger sizes in others.
I can remember being 5'7", 145 pounds and BARELY squeezing into a 14 from The Limited in the late 80s. I regularly see people here in the 190s and wearing 8s, 10s, and 12s. In the early 90s, I wore a size 12 and loved vintage clothes. Vintage clothes in size 16 didn't even come close to fitting. It's real.
LIke i tried to say, the mixing up with sizing does not necessarily make it vanity sizing. Its to do with the fact that asians are much smaller than westerners so they don't understand what they are doing. And they are not good pattern cutters. The processes they use to put a garment together, according to Fansanella, don't help them get it right, so they get it wrong.
I've also not fitted into clothes that i should do and found sizing all wrong. That's not what i saying at all. Sizing is often wrong but its not deliberate. Its poor industrial processes due in part also because of severe cost cutting as well as that foreigners who lack skills are doing it. That's what i'm saying.
Well it is like I was still wearing jr clothing when I was thin to my mid-30's, so I wore a 9 pants, then I think I may have gone to a 11 and 13, then I think I bought a 12 and stretched that out till I needed a 16.
I didn't read all the blog articles about sizing, but it seems to me what the writer was saying is that clothing manufactuers do not vanity size clothing, but they have changed the sizes to be larger to fit the larger growing population.
while i understand that the industry has changed because of where clothing is now manufactured, there has also been a very deliberate vanilty sizing movement from the 1980's to now.
in 1988 a size 16 pants/shorts from ll bean had a 30" waist. these days, the waist for a size 16 from ll bean measures to FIT a 34" waist. (note, the shorts i have from ll bean from 1988 measures 30" so it will fit someone with a slightly smaller waist.)
this is across the board. and ll bean vanity sizing is less exaggerated than other manufacturers of clothing.
