Okay so I'm 5' and roughly between 244-249 lbs. I know for BMI purposes my weight should be between 97-128 lbs or so. My current long term goal is to weigh 120 lbs but I was about this height at age 12 and a bit chucky, so should I strive to weigh even less? I'm also naturally curvy (particularly in the breasts department). At 12, I was a 34C and now I'm a 48 H (roughly) at age 30. So, what do you think?
Personally, I see it as a "one day at a time" type thing. Have goals, sure. Strive to go from obese bmi to overweight bmi to normal bmi before any amazing goals. This will take a year or 2 or even more, so it is a long term situation you are talking about. Be happy with every little advancement. I have learned that making goals is really about moving forward, overcoming obstacles, and living life now, not thinking of a distant future.
Yeah, I was just frustrated after losing 3 lbs in like a 2 week or 3 week period gaining it all back. Plus, all scales are different so it's frustrating that different doctors have different scales and then yours say different. Mine's digital, mine GPs is an old fashioned movable "weights" one, another doctor I saw had a fancy digital one, etc.
You'll see that even the littlest changes can have a big impact! What has helped me along is remembering that every day is different, and even when the scale doesn't move, because it will stop at some point, just keep at it!
I am 5' tall too. And while I think I looked chunky at 120lbs when I was about 12 or 13 too I also was going through puberty and didn't have fat in the same places it was still kind of baby fat, all over ya know what I mean? My goal is 125-130lbs. I'm not looking to be stick thin, I want to keep some of my boobs and butt and be healthy so I wouldn't read too much into the BMI thing because a lot of people find their numbers to be unrealistic.
I suspect the BMI works well as a guideline. Sometimes folks use it as an estimate of their goal weight, and adjust accordingly as they get closer to that number.
There are a number of factors to take into consideration when determining your ideal body weight. I'm sure there are others, but examples include:
- Frame size
- Overall comfort level at a given weight
- Previous injuries or health conditions that call for a low vs. avg weight
- Health conditions that keep you above an average weight
- Satisfaction with your appearance
- Family history of certain health conditions
- BMI
- Physician recommendation
It truly depends on YOU. This is definitely a personalized process, so perhaps let yourself explore and decide based on what makes the most sense for you and feels the best!

Hi Princess,
I feel you on the scale situation. It has been maddening to have various scales in my life MD etc. So, for me the only scale I am "believing" is my home scale, the one I way on in my birthday suit. When I weighed at the MD yesterday and it was 2 lbs different (in the wrong way)... I ignored it. It took a lot of willpower. But I was able to walk away with my esteem in tack.
I'm 5' too and as belovedspirit said, sometimes people use BMI as a guideline. I am one of these people. I've set my goal for 112, in around the middle of the healthy/normal range. But if I feel comfortable at 120, I would stop. My point is, you've set 120 as a target and you should work towards that and adjust to how you feel.
Yes but hypothetically does 97-110 make a 5' person stick thin?
From my experience, no. You might want to check out mybodygallery.com and browse the 5'0" women. All weights are posted so you can determine for yourself when women of our height begin to look too heavy or too to you.

Don't worry about where to stop right now. Pick a number if you must and get going.
The goal weight can fluctuate for quite a few people as they get closer and see what their body is like.
I agree with Vex, just get started! That was the best thing I ever did, just got started with no goal in mind (or I did small goals of getting under 300, under 275, etc.).
And now that I have lost so much and incorporated exercise, people always think I'm lighter than I weigh. Some parts of my body are lean and strong (other parts, not so much!).
