Default Sushi?!?

How on EARTH do you calculate sushi calories? I never order anything with cream cheese or that has any form of tempura (whether the roll is fried or something inside is). But I have no clue how to begin trying to figure out calories for this. We ate it tonight, and the best I could do was scour MFP and find something that even remotely resembled what I ate, and use that.

Is there any better way to figure it out?

Oh, sushi is the hardest to figure out! Lose it app has it so high. So...my husband makes his own now and I can see just what's in it and how to count it. Lose it says California roll is 45 cals. for 1.

Rice is high in calories (35 a TBS) so it could be 45 a piece...especially with avocado. That is the measure that I use.

Yeah some trackers have it really high like 800-900 cal for a 8 piece dragon roll. So I just each sushi on the days when I want to splurge and don't track.

This is a pretty good article explaining how it all adds up. Maybe you can take a look and estimate that way.

45 cal per piece sounds quite accurate. -- Sushi is a far better choice of eating out vs. some others like Mexican (My weakness!! -- Where a margarita is 550 cal each, and who can only have one??)

I love the rainbow roll...I figure it is around 500-600 cal, some Miso soup 50-100 cal, and a small side salad 25-75 cal...maybe700-800 cal for an evening out is not that devastating. And low fat

Munchy - great link, thanks. I guess I'll try to keep sushi to "splurge" days, too. Although I did some stairs and walking yesterday, so that should help. I also noticed that when we ordered our sushi for pick-up, they put all the sauces in little cups to go, instead of on the rolls. That worked out really well, as I was in complete control over how much went on (or if any went on to begin with, like the sweet mango sauce. Yuck.).

Our local grocery store Wegmans makes Veggie Sushi with rice for about 260 calories and non-rice for around 170 calories. I think that is 6 pieces if my memory serves. I don't eat seafood so I cannot comment on the standard version. Wegmans does an awesome job with these are they are not expensive (unlike their other prepared foods).

I never lost weight on sushi and I used to eat it every day. I do lose weight eating salads.

I estimate the calories at 50 cals per larger piece (a-la-carte nigiri or one piece in a fancy roll) and 25 cals per smaller piece (one piece in a regular maki roll).
