Default Salmon

Hey there. I like salmon because it tastes less fishy to me than other fish, but it still has a fishy taste. Any recipes that will lessen or get rid of this fishy taste?

The fresher the fish, generally, the less fishy it tastes. Frozen fish generally tastes the most fishy to me out of all of the choices.

Lemon juice usually helps, as well as pairing the fish with flavorful spices/sauces.

Lemon juice(fresh is best), also some fresh rosemary... you can marinate the salmon in a ziploc with some salt, pepper, rosemary, and olive oil... very yummy

Another idea-sugar free teriyaki (not sure how to make it but I am sure you could take a teriyaki sauce recipe and sub sugar with splenda).

We usually can't get the freshest fish in the U.S., but I do like getting really high-quality salmon. Like right now, wild Alaskan salmon is in season. I get some filets at Costco and it's tasty with very little done to it beyond basic seasoning and grilling it. I don't like to overcook it either, still just a little underdone in the center. Very moist and tasty!

But for a good sauce, I like to rough chop a red onion and a bunch of curly leaf parsley and throw it in a food processor with the juice of a lemon and some olive oil. I process it till it's just like salsa and put it on my fish after it's cooked. Season with sea salt and freshly cracked pepper to taste.

The fishy flavor has more to do with the quality of the fish than it does with the type, or the way you cook it.

Get the freshest, best grade of fish that you can afford. I didn't realize how much I LOVED fish until I lived in Japan and had good quality, fresh seafood.

If it tastes fishy, it's not fresh. I get my salmon straight from the drink and there is nothing fishy about it. I like it raw best, but usually bake it with lemon, bitter and garlic with a bit of S&P to season.

You need to purchase salmon marked "wild" not "farm raised". You can buy the frozen individual portions of "wild sockeye salmon" in Costco and most supermarkets. If you google "farm raised" fish, you will vomit. I would especially stay away from farm raised in China.

Thanks everyone.

I bought frozen fish, because then I can keep it a long time and not worry about it spoiling.

It says on the wrapper: "Individually vacuum-sealed, Skin on (great for grilling), Wild caught." It also says "Certified sustainable seafood, MSC." Uh-oh! The back says "Product of China!"

Where do I get fresh fish?

My fave way to cook salmon is baked with a nice coating of dijon mustard. The mustard is nice and sharp and gives it a nice flavor. I buy the same kind of fish - vacuum sealed frozen.

Fresh fish can be bought at a fish monger or large grocery stores have fish counters. Most times I'll Google them.
