Yes, going to see the doctor is probably a good thing, especially considering your past diagnosis. I have a friend with hyperthyroidism (causing weight loss) who didn't take care of it and didn't take care of herself, and it turned into hypO-thyroidism and she gained all of the weight back and then some! If it truly is vanity that's keeping you away, it could backfire.
That being said, you know your own body better than any doctor.
Do a bit of your own research. Write down what you are eating. Maybe you're not eating as badly as you think you are. Write down how you are feeling and when and what you just ate. It might ease your mind, and it will be helpful to the doctor to have that information, as well.
