Thumbs up Getting Back to What Works

This summer, I read Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. It was an incredibly eye-opening book on the terrible science involved in forming the FDA's "grains-grains-grains-all-day-for-everyone" nutritional advice. It also discussed how fat, including saturated fat, is much maligned without any solid evidence linking it to heart disease.

From that book, I found Mark's Daily Apple, a website talking about "primal" eating - essentially lots of meat of all kinds, butter, nuts (excluding peanuts), veggies, and fruit in moderation. I really bought into it and his other ideas about vitamins and exercise. I actually feel really good with a much fattier diet, and it's true that I don't get hungry very often. He's also a big fan of intermittent fasting, which is basically skipping a meal or two if you don't feel hungry.

However, for weight loss, this primal diet does not seem to be doing it for me at all. The main differences between it and how I was eating on SB are no beans (I LOVE BEANS), limited dairy (I LOVE DAIRY), and using animal fats like butter and heavy cream abundantly. I only have 10lbs to lose this time that I gained from an excellent and party-filled last semester of college, so it's back to SB for me! Hello chickpeas, goodbye full-fat bacon.

I read GCBC too & just finished Wheat Belly. I have to say I do much better without grains (terrible cravings) but just love beans! I am fascinated with reading about any kind of nutrtional research & find it interesting that some of the old research was so faulty, especially on saturated fats! Keep reading & keep an open mind!
