Default Maintainers weekly chat October 3 - October 9

My to-do list today includes dealing with four different contractors working simultaneously - all trying to finish up so they can get paid. Finishing up is, of course, the good news. Getting paid reminds me that having folks do work costs money, LOL.

My goal for the week is to watch out for off-plan snacks trying to sneak into my life.

Good morning!

I'm at work bright and early, catching up on the work that went undone while I was at the wedding in Colorado this weekend. Speaking of . . .

Here's a picture of the bride and me (I was the maid of honor). I felt GREAT and got lots of compliments. This wedding was one of the motivating factors in the beginning of my weight loss journey in January '10, and it was so gratifying to show up and not be the "fat bridesmaid," which is something I've already been 6 other times in my life.

I've blacked out my friend's face (my computer skills are rather basic, so I know that looks a little weird) but I'm OK with mine showing.

Have a good Monday, all. I'm going to go try and crawl out from all this paperwork.

Beautiful, Jen!

My plans for the week include stopping by the store to buy an onion. Why is it I have a list, a plan for meals for the week, and I spend over $200 at the grocery store and end up running out of onions two days later? Perhaps because onions were not on the list? Or I underestimated how many I'd need. In any case I have to stop and buy onions. I made a couple really delicious meals this weekend. Saturday was a spinach and ricotta pie which I served with fresh tomatoes. Last night I made homemade pasta sauce served over julienned zucchini and homemade foccacia. Both vegetarian (but not vegan). Tonight I was going to do a meatless chili mac casserole, but in order to do that, I need the darn onion.

Other than that I have no specific plans. I know what I should plan, but that's a different story.

Kale question: I'm going to roast some, should I cut it into smaller pieces first?

Oooh, look at your teeny-tiny waist, Jen. Also, someone did a great job of shaping your eyebrows -- or you've a deft hand with tweezers, or maybe you're just one of those fortunate people whose eyebrows naturally grow in a good shape.

Allison, I am helpless without onions, and completely paralyzed if I'm also missing garlic. This probably says something for the aromas in my living space, and what my breath is like, but I don't know how you got through cooking that many dishes before needing an onion. Nearly everything that I cook starts with me sauteeing an onion, then throwing in some garlic.

As for kale, I cut it into bite-sized pieces or chiffonade it into ribbons when I use it. Basically I use it in three ways: 1) roasted; 2) simmered slowly for a long time in chicken broth, with onions & just a small piece of ham scrap that I've frozen from the last time I had ham, or some turkey bacon; 3) tossed raw in a salad, using sesame oil and a bit of rice vinegar, in a recipe that I got here from one of Amanda's recent posts.

As for me, I'm sore-legged but fighting to be optimistic. I got up at 4 AM to make a spin class about half-hour away from here, at the new gym I joined. This gym is great but inconveniently located. This is my first spin class in over a month. (I used to take four classes a week.) The teacher was one of those lean tan leathery older women with a very short haircut who look nearly indestructible. (At some point, everyone has had a gym teacher who looked like this.) She had just run a marathon in hard rain the day before. After spin, she got right on a treadmill. Her spin class has no sprints, no jumps, no Britney Spears songs, no Usher singing about his girl's booty. No, it's a 45-minute ride with seriously heavy resistance on the peddles which barely ever lets up.

Wow.

My first introduction to that style of spin class. I didn't know there were different schools & theories of spin, but it makes sense that there would be, as all of life seems to be like that.

She told me I did awesome, but wants me to sit a little more forward, not try to go fast (ever) & add resistance if I bounce at all.

I had no idea being back in a spin class would make me happy, like that was enough of a present for today.

Wow Jen! You look phenomenal! Hope you had an amazing time.

Dh came home Saturday and leaves today....sigh.... he returns late Saturday night (Sunday morning really) and will get to see my failing uncle in Rhode Island (my last living relative) before returning. I am glad he can make a side visit from his trip.

My dd is off this morning to drive to Seattle to see the specialist for her Tourette's. First on her agenda when she gets there is to meet with the service dog organization she contacted. I have such mixed feelings about her getting a service dog but we'll just wait and see what happens. She feels so positively about it, but I have no idea how she (or we) will afford the fees.

Another busy week at work. Book fair is next week so I set up this Friday and have teacher previews. Always fun but exhausting for me.

Not sure what I'm doing for meals or planning this week but I need to do something. My weight was very low on Saturday (I think the lowest it has ever been) so I allowed some indulgences on Saturday and my weight is now up 4 pounds. So easy to put the weight back on!

Happy Monday all!

Good morning - I dropped out last week, my grandmother wound up in the hospital with chest pains and ended up having a procedure last Thursday.

Hoping this week gets back to normal.

Hi all, I'm still in Colorado till Saturday and today I'm taking the day off from visiting all my artist friends out here and seeing their studios and gallery exhibitions. I've just overloaded myself visually and need some down time. In fact, I haven't even gotten out of bed yet except to get the laptop and I've been up since 8 am. Just lounging, doing my journal writing, working on my magazine's articles, doing email, and facebook, listening to NPR podcasts.

When I do finally get up, I'm going to do some resistance band work. Yesterday, I did an hour and a half yoga class with my sister and decided that yoga is just not for me. I wasn't sore or felt the stretches that the instructor was talking about. Plus there was just too much time at the end just lying there breathing. I guess it's relaxing for some people, but if they didn't have artwork on the ceiling for me to look at, I would have been really bored.

Tomorrow, one of my artist friends is taking me over to Red Rocks Park in Morrison, CO to see the natural ampitheather and the special 11 foot high by 8 foot wide commission art piece she made for them. Then we'll go to lunch at a Medditerian restaurant in Golden. I know I'll be able to eat hummas and pita and roasted vegetables.

Still having trouble at night with attitude sickness. Getting wicked headaches that medicine isn't taking care of. Still having a little trouble with acid reflux even though I really have been sticking to the restricted diet. I'm fine when I wake up, but after I start eating during the day, it comes on. So I'm back on the Nexium which usually upsets my stomach.

I'm really missing my dh and cat and won't see them until Sunday.

Hi guys!

Jen, you look great!

Saef, interesting about the spin class. I have found the same thing with pilates -- like there is yoga-esque pilates, and then fitness pilates.

to those with ailing relatives.

DH ran a 5k on Saturday and not only set a PR by over a minute faster than his previous PR, but won 3rd place in his age group! He finished in 22:08. I think he was motivated to run faster because he bought a pair of short shorts (you know those running shorts that are so short that only hardcore male runners are willing to wear them?) and wanted to prove himself worthy of them. And it was freezing outside.

I had a procedure done this morning to drain the ganglion cyst in my left wrist. They tried to aspirate some of the fluid but it was too thick (as the doctor had told me would probably happen). So instead he poked about 20 holes in the cyst and then squished it, and I am supposed to keep squishing it all day to help the fluid come out. He was basically like, wherever it hurts to squish, that is where you need to do it. I'm a little disappointed because for some reason I figure that as soon as it had burst, I would be able to put pressure on that hand again, but not yet. The whole reason I had this done is that I thought the cyst was the reason I could not put pressure on my hand. Like, if I was on my hands and knees, I couldn't put any weight on my left hand without making it into a fist instead. I think it may be slightly better now but hopefully when the fluid reabsorbs it will feel better.

In other news, I am no longer on the gluten free diet. Then two nights ago I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like my legs from the knees down were overheated, overstuffed sausages. My weight has been going up steadily the past couple days (undoing all the work I did the past two weeks) and I think I am retaining a massive amount of fluid in my legs, even though the doctor said he didn't really feel it. I got a blister on my toe from them feeling really squeezed in my shoes which I wear every day, so I think that is evidence that my feet were swollen. We're going to try playing with my meds a little bit. I don't think it's the gluten necessarily because I had a couple days during the past month where I ate something with gluten and felt fine. Could just be overindulging Saturday night?

Hi all! Am home briefly to feed my own pets and clean up. New puppy (Havanese) started today - weighs about 2 lbs - scary small!

My body apparently doesn't like organic peanut butter - TMI to go any further.

Good week all - I won't be near my computer again until Saturday!

I like your being honest about this. I've sometimes thought that not enough people admit that they don't really care for yoga or that they believe it's overrated. Yoga is one of the sacred cows of our time & often it feels like one is not allowed to criticize yoga publicly, anymore than one is allowed to dislike puppies & kittens.

That being said, for me, just now, yoga is a much-needed life line.

This because I am, in general, a driven person, full of self-reproach when I am not actively working on something or following a to-do list. When I am in yoga class, my "to do" is just to follow the sequence of movements, to think only of what my body is doing at that very moment. Particularly during the relaxation phase at the end. It's the only time (other than lying down to sleep) when I tacitly give myself permission to relax & think of nothing & to stop my mind from chattering at me.

Also lately I am always feeling tense, poised for flight or self-defense, particularly in the morning, when two consecutive cups of coffee leave me shaky and almost visibly vibrating. Anything physical focuses me & gives me some release from being continuously on edge.

The other thing is, although I'm in the gym every day, I tend to live from the neck up, and not think much about the rest of my body. It sort of evaporates. (It's why I was able to live with being dangerously obese for years. Because I pretty much forgot about my body for extended periods of time, or didn't see it as it was, or didn't care much about it.) With yoga, I'm asked to focus on carrying out certain movements and I am thinking about different body parts or zones, and how they're feeling, and what their range of motion is. (For instance, I never knew how tight my hips and calves were till I found out which yoga poses really challenged me. This also confirmed how unsteady my balance is, and that it is a matter of mind as much as body.) So during yoga practice, my body gradually comes into focus for me, rather than being blurry & dissipated or forgotten about, as it is during the rest of my day.

What I mean is, yoga treats certain disorders of the mind & soul with which I am afflicted. Does this make sense to you? I did want to explain what I see in it, but as I said, I can understand why someone without my issues would be bored by it, or even annoyed by some of the platitudes that surround it.

Yuck, Jessica. Just, yuck.

But you know, my inner 10-year-old boy totally "gets" this, because it's gotta be somehow like squeezing a great big pimple, or spitting out the phlegm: There's the relief of getting out the unneeded "poisonous" gunk.

Can I also say how envious I am of your husband's running time? Was it P90X that did it?

I'm signed up for another 5K this weekend, at an Apple Festival in a nearby country town. I hope it's one of those sunny, crystalline October days in the Northeast that get depicted on calendar pages for October. I'm babying my feet this week in anticipation of this event, which I look forward to very much, because the course is likely to be pretty, running past orchards and pumpkin fields.

I drive past a pumpkin field on the way to yoga class three times a week. The pumpkins seem to be inflating a little more each day, getting even ruddier, though I'm sure it's just from the foilage surrounding them dying back a little, as we've had frequent rains & some rather crisp evenings down in the 40s lately.

Although I've never taken a yoga class, I do know there are different types of yoga, some being more "intense" and others more sedate (into relaxation). Like Jessica said about pilates classes all differing. The only classes I've ever taken were cardio classes. I'd like to try Zumba some day, but I'm so uncoordinated and can't follow along very well!

DH flew to Yakima today to see about a house we did there. I guess the homeowner doesn't like the weatherstripping on one door so he's holding $25,000 final payment from us (for what is probably less than a $200 fix). Ugh. Why is it that the ultra rich can get away with stuff like that?
