I think you are making great choices by walking and watching what you eat. As for support from your family....if it happens that's great, but you can do this without their support. It took me a long time to realize that I can never hope to keep up with the amount of food my husband can eat.
We eat the same stuff for the most part - but he can add a big ol' plate of pasta where I will have shiritaki noodles. It's all about portion control.
One other thing I have found to be really helpful is logging my food. I use FitDay.com but DailyPlate.com is good, too. It's so easy to eat more calories than I should (I'm pretty good at denial
) when I don't log.
