Bless their hearts, I know they love me, but when my parents come to visit they always bring the absolute worst foods with them for a dieter. They know I'm trying to drop weight, yet they brought coconut cake, lemon cake, chocolate chip cookies, etc. Of course it's all "for the kids," but we don't live in separate houses. And to make them feel welcome, my wife made a whole pan of brownies - one-half with chopped pecans and the other half with chocolate chips inside(!) The refrigerator is stuffed and the counters are overflowing.
So far I've held my own, simply by refusing to take a single bite of any of it because I know what will happen if I do. For example, one of my sweet treats at the end of the day is a York Peppermint Patty, which I greatly look forward to. Well, I ate one last night before bed, and after it was nicely in my stomach, instead of being satisfied I thought I was going to stagger into the kitchen, Frankenstein-fashion, and gobble up the entire lemon cake.
It was like pouring gasoline on a fire. I gave a little ground by satisfying myself with a bag of 100-calorie popcorn instead. But I tell you what, I have to practice iron will when they come to visit.
