Alternative to coffee?
My big day is August 1st...3 days away- and I will be jumping into my new life. I've compiled tons of recipes, I've got my workout plan ready and I've got my support network right behind me...I do have one problem: I MUST have coffee in the morning, or I am a total wreck. Not only, that but I truly enjoy the taste of coffee/espresso and I think that if I have to give that up I'll be setting myself up for failure.
I normally have 3 shots of espresso and a half a cup of 2% milk over ice. No sweetener. Can any of you suggest any alternatives that will still me a jolt...but without the fat???
Cheers!

Yerba Mate is a very strong, caffinated tea, but you'd have to drink a lot of it to match 3 cups of espresso. Have you considered trying skim milk? It might be a better alternative for you than going without.
Good luck!

I don't do coffee but do you have to give up coffee? How about coffee with almond milk? or soy milk?

I'm not sure what kind of plan you're looking into, but if you're going with calorie counting, then I would suggest to either:
1. Switch to skim milk, almond milk (yum!), or soy milk, OR
2. Lighten up on (or eliminate) how much you use, OR
3. Leave it the same and just count the calories. Half a cup of 2% milk is about 70 calories according to my calorie tracker, and that's really not bad at all.
You mentioned the fat content, but 2.5 grams of fat isn't make or break.
Now, I'm assuming that you mean that you're only doing this once a day. If you have 5 of these a day, that might be an issue!

others suggested skim milk, almond milk - coconut milk works ok in coffee but there is still the fat.
1/2 cup of 2% doesn't sound like a lot, why not include it in your plan? I make room for 100-200 calories for my coffee and creamer since it helps me stay on track.

Thanks for the suggestions...I think I'm going to give the almond milk a try and see how that turns out. Either way I am still making room in my calorie plan for my 1 serving of coffee daily. Right now I'm working on a 1500 calroie per day plan.

What about coconut milk creamer? So Delicious brand is fat free, only 10 calories per tablespoon for the unflavored. The vanilla and hazelnut have 20 calories, but are still fat free. They're nice and creamy; I've actually given up the sugar free Coffee Mate because I love the So Delicious so much.

Kudos for trying to give up coffee. I only make it three days before I was a raving B****. I use a little bit of creamer and agave syrup. Everyone is happier once I had caffeinated, especially come noon.

Chai! I am not a huge tea fan, but chai with all of its spices is delicious and has the "filling" effect I get from coffee. I put about 3 tbs skim milk and 1 tbs sugar in it. Not a zero calorie drink the way I make it, but skim milk is nutritious and 1 tbs of sugar is totally worth the calories

I agree with the others! Don't give up food that you absolutely love! If you can.. try to slowly work your way down to drinking it black. Up until January of this year I always put cream in my coffee. We went to Mexico a few months and didn't always get creamer. So, I started drinking it black. Now I absolutely love the taste of it black. Once or twice a month I get a craving for creamy coffee...so I have it.
Enjoy your new lifestyle!! It looks like you've already made some progress!!

I LOVE me some Postum!
It's been discontinued for a few years, but it still shows up on ebay every once in a while. When I heard it was being discontinued, I literally drove to every single grocery store in my new city (I had just moved here), and a couple of asian markets, and bought about 16 canisters :-) I've "gifted" most of them, but I've got a couple left

never heard of this, but the site says it's coming back in June, 2012. http://postum.com/ looks interesting, wheat and molasses...
