Smile Has anyone gotten taller?

Hi! Like most over 50's, I started to shrink a bit in the last 10 years (I'm 60) but still say I'm 5'7" tall because that's what I was as a 20 something. I stand as tall as I can at the doctor's office for my yearly exams and it has really been 5'6.5" for the past 8 or 9 years. Well, last month, after losing over 50 pounds and 5 months of exercise and yoga, I measured 5'7" at the doctor's office for the first time in all these years! I expected to lose weight and gain strength through diet and exercise, but never thought I'd get my half in inch back! What a great surprise that was.

Yes, at 235 they measure me as 5'6.5, and at 160 I was always measured at 5'7. Lol.

When I mentioned this in the gym, one of the yoga instructors said she gained almost an inch in height about a year after she really got into yoga. She was never heavy - just got taller due to the stretching, she guessed. I was 5' 7" while I was heavy - just started getting smaller after menopause. Any way you look at it, this is great. Glad others have had the same experience.

I was about 5'5" when I got married at 19. My dh was only about 5'7" and with heels I always felt too tall, plus the fact that I only weighed 103 lbs (can you believe that?!!). Now at 68 I'm only 5'3." I had osteoporosis but after taking Fosamax and working out more my bones are now ok, but my height hasn't changed and I feel short. I do a lot of stretches these days ...some is a class called Yoga Stretch, so I hope that along with hopefully losing more weight I'll get taller too! Interesting thread.

Maybe ... you are standing taller because of the weight loss. Toning up and getting in shape will make me stand tall for sure!

I'd agree with the standing taller part if I didn't know in my heart that I ALWAYS stretched my body up as much as possible. If it's just a matter of standing taller, I'd think that at least once in those 9 or 10 years I'd have been able to get to 5'-7". And if I hadn't been to the same doctor's off in February. And if I hadn't previously measured 5'7" more than 10 years ago when I was the same heavy weight.

Bottom line is, I really believe we can reverse many of the effects of aging and menopause with diet and exercise. I certainly don't expect to grow taller than 5'7". It's just wonderful to be back where I was at 17 in the height department. Now if I can just get close in the weight department (was 140 then - trying for 152 now) I'll be really thrilled.

Me too! I've always done a little yoga but when I do it really regularly I notice a big difference. I'm taller than people who used to be taller than me. I started doing hot yoga in May and wouldn't be surprised to be 5'9 by next year.

Really, our spines get compacted over the years and when our muscles aren't strong, our skeletons don't have the support to be as erect as they can be, even if we're standing as tall as we can.

My SIL noticed the same thing. So, yeah, I'm sure we can grow taller.

I had always thought I was 5'7" since high school. A couple years ago I was at my Dr and while being weighed I had the nurse measure me too. I'm 5'8". For years my sister who is also 5'8",kept telling me she thought I was taller than I originally thought. I kept telling her she must only be 5'7" because we were the same height!Lol. Bottom line...what a delight to find out I wasn't as fat as I thought I was!
