Default Menopause and Hot Flashes

There was another thread where some mention suffering with hot flashes...me included. I had tried most of the otc supplements...got some help but not nearly enough and hadn't had a good sleep in at least eight years ...

Well, I finally found something that REALLY helps! It is called i-Cool and you only have to take it once a day. I take it at bedtime and I am sleeping so much better. It is expensive ..about $28 for a month's supply but it is well worth it to me. So far I have not heard of any bad effects from it and I hope I don't has I was getting very desperate for some relief and this has been the best product I've found. You can take it with other supplements and I have take it with Estroven and Remiphemin (not at the same time..just whichever I happen to have) but they did not work this well...and from the first tab this has worked for me. I still have a 5 or 6 hot flashes in 24 hrs but for me that is very good. I also notice that they are getting much milder.

Just thought I'd pass this along in case it helps some one else. I don't know why some women have them so badly and others don't but I have really suffered with them and I remember my mom did too but not sure whether she had them as long as I have. I am 67 and they started in my early-mid 40s!

Mary - I'm so glad you've found something that gives you relief from menopause symptoms. Just to be on the safe side, though, you might want to mention this to your doctor to make sure it is safe, and that it doesn't interfer with any meds you are currently taking. I feel for you, still having hot flashes at age 67. Not fair!!

Jane I will tell him, but I have to admit that at this point I don't much care if it does have side effects. I know that's not good, but I doubt it's any worse than the hormones I used to take and I just need the relief so badly. I did some research on the internet and did not find anything about problems with it. I was getting very desperate and the doctor just laughs when I tell him about it.

I well know the feeling of those hot flashes!
My doctor refused to give me anything as I suffer from a heart murmer and irregular heart beat - something that is not treated as so major these days. I still get sweats even now and wake up at night with them and I am now 76.

sorry to hear that emaline29...I know how miserable they are. I have had them for so many years and have gotten so little sleep! It has gotten so I can't stand to go on so little sleep anymore! A few days after this I had a few nights where I didn't sleep well...and I thought, oh no perhaps it isn't working afterall...then realize I had taken a supplement containing caffeine too late on those days. Made sure I didn't do that the last two days and have slept good again...at least for me. I still get up at night to go to the bathroom once or twice (another problem!) but at least hot flashes are no longer keeping me from sleeping!

I am very thankful I found this product. So far everything I have read indicates no adverse effects from it. If I hear differently I will post it.

And don't remind me of the peeing at night - 2/3 times is my regular. Sometimes I do manage to get back to sleep straight away but the worst thing is having to struggle to the loo with a bursting bladder and excruciating pain in my back and I hate to admit it but sometimes the pain wins and I end up trailing a few drops behind me! However, I do have the luxury of not having to get up early to go to work or get somebody's breakfast, I just have a good sleep whenever.
Glad you found something that helps you.

Emaline29, believe me I understand! I don't have the pain thank God, but I do understand the dribbles. Even during the day I have to go very fast and I often have very little warning...they call this urgency and it is rightly named. I've had 3 surgeries in an attempt to fix the problem too!

I just noticed you are 76....and still having hot flashes...I wonder why some of us have them so long and others don't? I am so sick of them but thankful because they are lots better now with i-Cool. I know a woman who is in her 80s and still having one a day. Just doesn't seem fair!

So glad to get your reply on the pee bit as I worried that perhaps I had gone too far in my descriptions and might seem somewhat crass.
As regards the hot flashes, which here we mostly call FLUSHES and very much more defined, methinks, as they tend to be much more than just a flash. lol! Back to the point - mine are mostly on awakening at night caused by sleep apnia and then followed by the sweats which are apparently due to a combination of being diabetic and having an under active thyroid. So perhaps I should not be included your category. But the feelings are the same so I can empathise.
I often find, however, that I get soo hot that rolling on to the side of the bed to let my back and bed cool off is not enough. After about half an hour of tossing and turning and trying to keep in a sleepy mode, I eventually have to get up and come into the sitting room and sit in front of my fan whilst my bed can get really cooled down. In fact if I don't wait till I am quite cold before returning it will all start over again. By that time I am usually wide awake!
And No! Life is not fair!

Default hormonal with empty nest - Help!

Hi. Just joined a few days ago.In my introduction I mentioned that I'm 56 and dealing with menopause/thyroid/prediabetes and empty nest. I am not at my all time high wt but weigh a lot more than I did when I delivered "the creatures that have had the nerve to grow up and leave my nest. My husband is still around but only weighs about 10-15 lbs. more than when we got married and is getting on my nerves." I have had some luck with bioidentical hormone treatment in the last year but doc is changing things around and I'm not doing as well with the mood and weight loss part now. I regained in 2 weeks the 9 lbs that I spent 3 -4 months losing. The empty nest thing is killing me. I have 2 sons. The youngest is a senior in college and received a dream job offer in another state for when he graduates. I'm very happy for him. My oldest is 25, working and having fun and really doesn't want to share many details about his life with us. I get it...but I don't like it! I found comfort in peanut M&Ms on Friday night and then did a whole bag of milkchocolate Dove Promises (wrapped in foil with nice little sayings inside - like I need that to buy them!) on Saturday night. I have no energy and of course have just gained another couple of lbs .Help!

Emaline29 - I am also diabetic and my hot flush/flash LOL...are very much as you describe too. I keep a fan at my bedside...took a few years for my dh to agree to it because he gets cold but I told him he can cover up and/or wear a cap (bald), but I can only remove my blankets and my clothes, and I still have them (hot flashes) even when naked! The fan really helps but I have to keep turning it on and off for him and for my chill esp now in cooler weather.

So I am just so glad to find iCool. I still have hot flashes but much less, and usually sleep much better than I was before I started it. However I said USUALLY I sleep better because recently neither my dh nor I have been sleeping very well for some reason. Not sure what it is now...since it's not hot flashes..sometimes I get up and get on the computer until I can't keep my eyes open, but even then I may not sleep. But every few nights we both sleep better even though it is interrupted by our "trips," as we talked about before. Maybe this is just part of growing old..I've heard old people can't sleep as much...

Hi DeeDee! Glad you have joined us! It is a real change when the kids leave home, isn't it? The house seems so quiet. We were lucky in that we had 4 and they were like two sets with several years in between so nest emptied a little at a time. My boys left soonest...to get married and no way were they old enough to marry (19)...and that really hurt. I had hoped to have them around a few more years. The girls took longer. But by the time they all left I actually was ready...later I felt sad about it ...but at the time I was worn out from raising kids for almost 30 years. I have always had my own interests outside my family and have a very close relationship with my dh so that helped I'm sure. And then when the grandchildren start coming that helps too.

What is this bioidentical hormone treatment? Never heard of that. I don't like to take hormones (even though I took Premarin for about 18 years!) because they affect so many things in our bodies including our moods esp if they are not quite in balance. Maybe that is partly what is affecting your acceptance of the empty nest and even your dh?

I felt great on Premarin and have often wished I could take it again because of my hot flashes...but I just think it is not safe so I won't. But once I stopped it I was hit SO hard with the hot flashes! It was terrible! They gradually got easier with Estroven supplement but still pretty bad...until I found iCool. At least it's a little easier now.

I know what you mean about turning to food...and I love my sweets too esp if eating for emotional reasons. But the sweets will cause you to feel tired...a lift and then crash..they are NOT your friend but of course you know that..I can't give advice about that because I struggle with overeating and eating wrong way too much myself. Do good for a few days, then get off track...but I keep trying. You keep trying too...you need to take care of your body as it's the only one you will get on this earth and you are still young so need it to last a long time!

I hope your doctor will get the hormone thing worked out soon. This forum is a good place to get support and friendship too.

Default Menopause and Hot Flashes

Hi Maryea - thanks for reply. I am soo ready for grandchildren but my sons are not ready to be fathers. I do have a couple of great nieces that live about an hour away and I try to spoil them whenever I get the chance. I think if you have more than 2 children that exhaustion factor eases the initial transition into an empty nest. I've also heard that girls aren't as abrupt about the whole thing as boys. I was so glad to find this site. The bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is somewhat controversial. I am taking bioidentical estrogen and boioidentical progesterone. I have suffered from severe hot flashes for at least 10 years. I have also been carrying an extra 30 -40 lbs which didn't help but I was living with it. Two years ago I developed a depression (I had experienced some painful losses) that wasn't responding enough to conventional treatment (antidepressant, therapy). I went on conventional HRT and the mood thing and hot flashes greatly improved. Then I saw Suzanne Sommers and Dr. Christiane Northrup on Oprah talking about bioidentical hormones and that they believed were healthier. So I searched for doctors to work with me on that. I also have hypothyroid and found a specialist who believes in bioidenicals. The Angeliq (conventional HRT) was very helpful and simple. But the bioidenticals may be safer - so for now I'm taking them.

Oh, I see. I hope they help you and that they are safe, Deedee. Sometimes it is very hard to know what to do.

Just a thought ladies, I find that now at 76 although I have these sweats at night the actual hot flashes that happen at the beginning of the menopause do get less severe as time goes by.
As for the lack of sleep as one gets older - I have found that even if I have a really busy day and feel quite exhausted when I go to bed I will still wake up about 3am!
At least in my situation I don't have anybody that I have to get up for or who will come and disturb me. I had a really bad night only this week and ended up sitting and playing scrabble on my Nintendo till 5am, went to bed and slept till 1pm!! Don't like doing that as it means missing the best part of the day, but Hey!?!

Hi Mary,

I am so glad I checked out this post. I just ordered from GNC. I have suffered with them for at least 10 years. Get them every night and every morning.

I'll let you know if it works for me.

Lynn
