I follow a reduced calorie diet and it has been working for the past 6 months. I am now down to the final 10lbs to lose and it seems I have hit a plateau. To shake things up a bit, I have decided to cut back on my carbs. The thing is I normally eat a sandwich in the mornings ( 1 slice of bread being 60 calories),
I started cutting back on the carbs yesterday and had some scrambled eggs with spinach and a slice of bread. That was fine and kept me full until it was time for my snack 3hrs later.
This morning I had a slim-fast shake and I was dying of hunger after 1 hr. Clearly that's not ideal.
Do any of you have any low-carb breakfast suggestions? I am not really a fan of oatmeal but I am open to any other ideas.
I have a protein shake every morning. It is a little bit of effort, but I think it's pretty good. I use half a cup of fat free vanilla soy milk, a third of a cup of plain low fat yogurt, 3 ounces of firm tofu, 1/2 teaspoon of green tea powder, 1 tbsp of flaxseeds, and a big squirt of agave nectar (you could use honey, but agave is lower on the GI and doesn't spike my blood sugar).
I throw it all in a blender and process it for a few minutes. As you can imagine, it's a little bland without the agave nectar, so that's why I added that to the original recipe.
It's not pretty, but it is a TON of protein, and it always keeps me going until my 10:00 snack.
Slim Fast shakes don't have a lot to keep you full - I like the Oh Yeah brand. They are slightly thick - well not "thick" but not watery either. They have a bit of fat for fullness and 32 grams of protein. I weigh 270 lbs and they keep me full for a few hours. I get them online at netrition.com but I think GNC carries them also.
Every couple of days I make up a batch of mini-fritattas (or egg muffins as some recipes call them). Tonight mine consisted of homemade, low-fat ground turkey sausage (low-fat ground turkey, sage, salt, pepper), spinach, green onions, yellow peppers, 1/2 whole egg, 1 whole egg white. I mix up a big batch, put them in muffin pans, bake on 350 until the egg has completely cooked. They reheat great, two for breakfast is only 200 calories, 3.5 carbs, and 11g of protein.
