Default SBD Phase 2 in Pregnancy?

I am 20 weeks pregnant and I started out overweight. I am 5'4" and when I found out I was pregnant I was at a weight of 165. The doctor told me that because I am overweight I should only gain 10 pounds for my pregnancy. I am now 173...which means I am up 8 pounds and only halfway through. I have read that South Beach is safe in pregnancy as long as you do Phase 2 and add a few things such as more milk and make sure to eat your fruits and whole grains.

So my question...have you heard of anyone doing this diet in pregnancy to maintain weight...not to lose it? And/or do you think it will work?

Thanks soo much!

Hi, Milissa! We have had a number of expecting mothers successfully following the South Beach Diet. As long as you follow Phase II with the additional dairy and fruits, you should be able to continue to eat healthy while keeping your weight under control.

Good luck, and congratulations!

Make sure you have your doctor's OK before doing this. Take your prenatal vitamin, get at least 3 dairy servings and plenty of protein. Eat a good variety of fruits & veggies. Most docs recommend at least around 2000 cal/day to support baby's growth.
