Default OT - Boyfriend's son...

...has decided to put aside his hatred for our dog and try out another night here at our house . I am pretty excited about it. Wish me luck!

Good luck ! It is important to have a good relationship with your BF son as you know. Why does he have a problem with your dog ?

Thanks so much. He hasn't stayed the night here in almost a year because he really hates our dog. Our dog has no social skills (our fault, not his) and he barked and growled the whole entire time the last time he was here, no matter what we tried to get him not to do so. We have been working on the dog's manners lol so hopefully things will go a bit better this time

That's good....willingness to try again is very admirable. I hope it all goes well.

The dog has to learn to trust. My dog was this way, too. He barked like crazy at anyone that came in the house or near me .When my son came over, I tried putting some of my dog's favorite treats on the floor near my son. He gingerly tried those. I kept putting them closer each time and finally put them on the coffee table near where my son was sitting. Each time he got a little closer, eventually he dared letting my son hand one to him. He finally learned not to be afraid and now my son is one of his favorite people. I did the same thing with my neighbor ,and he has learned to love her, too. It is all about letting the dog know it is OK. My dog was never socialized, either, but once he has learned that he can trust you or not be afraid he is a friend for life.

As much as I love pets (and I adore my cats) - dog vs child? Child, no contest. Your boyfriend needs unrestrained access to his son. His son needs to be able to visit his dad whenever he wants. Find friends who will watch the dog for visits, figure out better manners or find a new home for him.

It's not like my bf never has anything to do with his son it's just normally at my bf's parents house. Every other weekend he stays there with his son so yeah, he is not choosing anything over his kid but thanks.

And I would like to also add that even before I moved in here with the dog, the setup with my bf and his son was the same, every other weekend they both stayed at my bf's parents house.

The kid idolizes his grandpa plus there he has his dog that he loves, access to all sorts of game station things, his own TV, a swimming pool, etc etc. Things that most kids would definitely love to have.
