Default My new favorite lentil recipe - ethiopian lentils

I love ethiopian food, like really love it, like I'd want to marry it.

Anyway, I ended up finding this recipe and making it and although it doesn't taste exactly like what I get when I go out for ethiopian, it is sooo good!!

http://vegandad.blogspot.com/2009/11...n-lentils.html

That site also has other ethiopian inspired recipes among a ton of other recipes.

VeganDad Ethiopian Lentils

INGREDIENTS
- 1 1/2 cup green lentils
- 3 cups water (more if needed)
- 2 large sweet onions, halved and sliced
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 fresh green chile or jalapeno, seeded and minced
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp cardamom
- 3 tbsp red wine vinegar
- salt and pepper to taste

METHOD
1. Rinse lentils then place in a large saucepan with water, onions, garlic, and chile. Bring to bubbling, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 45 mins, until lentils and soft and onions have more or less disintegrated. Stir periodically and add more water if needed.
2. From here, you can add in the remaining ingredients, cook for 10 mins, and serve. However, if you have the time, I like to add in the spices and cook, uncovered, for another 45-60 mins. Green lentils are durable enough to withstand a lot of cooking without falling apart. This way you can cook off some more of the water and slowly make a nice thick stew. Then, stir in vinegar and cook for 10 mins, season to taste, and serve.

Thanks Nelie! I've never had Ethopian food so I'm curious to give this a try. I noticed the recipe calls for "sweet" onion, is that different then the common yellow onion large or small?

beautifulone - I imagine they mean something like a Vidalia or Walla Walla onion. They're not as hot as regular yellow or white onions.

This sounds yummy! I've never had the chance to eat Ethiopian food unfortunately, but there hasn't been an ethnic food type I haven't liked! (Maybe that is part of my problem! )

I really appreciate the recipe.

This is a really interesting way to season lentils -- I've made the base recipe, of course, but never with that combination of flavors. I'm going to have to try this soon.

Sounds yum!

I just started experimenting with lentils and made "tacos" last week. Another day I used red lentils in a recipe and it was just all mushy LOL.

This is cooking right now.

I used regular yellow onions and actually cut down the onion proportion a little bit.
